Not important, but she’s 54?! With slightly more modern glasses and hair she could pass as 24!

I’m high risk as I’m immunosuppressed. I’ve had 8 vaccines, shielded for well over a year and always wore a mask. I finally caught COVID last week. There’s not a doubt in my mind that I would have died already if I hadn’t been vaccinated. My oxygen saturation levels just keep dropping - 90% today. I’m going to have to go to hospital ☹️

Hateful woman. Each time I think her policies can’t get any more evil she outdoes herself.

I believe it’s at the sentencing that victim impact statements are read. It’s the only time victims can speak directly to the perpetrator. Some victims might get a sense of closure from that.

We can’t even cure autoimmune diseases yet. Why the fuck has my immune system decided my own tissues are the enemy?! Such a dick move.

I think I’m on my 3rd kindle now - I had the paper white, the voyage and now the oasis. I read loads, a good hundred books a year. I have lupus though and the arthritis in my hands was making it really painful to physically hold open a book. Plus I’d filled two huge bookcases in my tiny flat. The kindle is obviously much lighter and with a case or popsocket it doesn’t hurt me to hold it. I have damage to my vision now and the kindle has worked out brilliantly for that too - I’ve been able to upload a particularly legible font to help me out and adjusting the screen brightness has been kinder on my eyes too. They really come into their own when you go on holiday - the oasis is waterproof too.

Or move the pedals to the touch screen. So convenient!

No, he voluntarily returned his membership to the academy and they banned him from attending for 10 years.

Yeah, this guy didn’t have a leg to stand on. There’s an independently owned cafe opposite sarhole mill (inspiration for “the shire”) on the street JRR Tolkien grew up on called “the hungry hobbit”. It’s been called that since 2005 - before the release of the hobbit film. A production company sued this tiny sandwich shop, sitting on a roundabout 3 miles south of Birmingham for the unauthorised use of the word “hobbit”. That was completely egregious imo. It’s now called “the hungry hobb” - they just took down the last two letters on the sign. I really should grab a sandwich from them one day.

London has far far far more parks than those two! They’re not even the biggest in London, Richmond park is at 2500 acres (that’s more than 3x the size of Central Park) It’s where that viral video of the dog chasing deer was taken - JESUS CHRIST, FENTON!! Personally I’ve always preferred St James Park over Hyde or regents if you’re in central London, but it’s a small 50ish acres. Hampstead Heath (800 acres) and bushy park (1099 acres) are similar in size to Central Park too if you’d prefer not to be in central London.

To answer OPs question, I’d much rather live in a city with more parks than I can count than just one massive one somewhere. There’s 5 parks within a 15 minute walk of my house and I live in a city!

EDIT: from Wikipedia: London is made of 40% public green space, including 3,000 parks and totaling 35,000 acres.

It’s not about her, it’s about the victims. They want the opportunity to speak in open court and to witness her sentencing. Currently she can just opt not to go but I think they’re looking into changing the law so that the victims can have at least that.

When I was very little, maybe 2, my mum had sat me down in front of Sesame Street while she did some chores. Not long after I came running into the kitchen “mummy mummy there’s a birdie in the front room!” She said yes, that was big bird and to go back in and watch it. I kept running back to her increasingly more upset about the birdie until she came into the living room to find a pigeon had come down the chimney and was irately trying to escape. I know I was too young to remember it, but I swear I can recall the feeling of vindication!

I’m not OP and I’m not American so I don’t know anything about his policies, but I know he suffers from depression and has been very open about it. I believe he checked himself into a psych facility not long after he was elected. I thought his honesty and openness about it as a man with a kinda macho image was refreshing to see and a good example against toxic masculinity.

I was trying to explain this story to my partner. It’s absolutely bonkers and that’s before I knew that poor lady died.

Who’s saying no to a free holiday? I went away this year for the first time in a decade and it was heavenly. I’d never chose to go on a cruise, but I’d jump at the chance for a new experience, some sun and relaxation - especially over winter when I having to chose between heating and eating ffs.

I caught whooping cough as a kid. Nearly killed me. It’s a terrifying disease.

Good not-bot!

The article says all South African prisoners are eligible for parole after serving half their sentence.

That photo is even less flattering than the real mugshot. What a strange choice for a “fan”.

Not a botanist, but my house is a jungle of tropical plants and I’m pretty experienced at propagating plants. Sycamores can be propagated, but not easily and not from the stump. You need soft wood cuttings from the top of the tree and those cuttings need to be taken in spring. Even in the best case scenario, it’s still really hit and miss.

You can propagate plants at this time of year via air layering, but it’s pretty complicated and again the success rate is poor. Most importantly, air layering needs a living tree to work. This tree is essentially dead.

The only thing they might be able to do is get a small young branch to root and plant it back in the same spot. It would technically still be the same tree but it would be a tiny little branch.

I think that’s precisely what it intends to do. There’s interest-specific or country-specific instances that are meant to be your “home”. Lemmy.world is a bad example of it because it’s non-specific and sign ups were open for a long time.

I hadn’t heard of this case but I googled the diary entries and at first pass they do seem very damming - no unlike Lucy lettsby’s notes. But the testimony from multiple experts is pretty clear that they are not confessions but the tangled thoughts of someone suffering from multiple child bereavements. Of course she wasn’t in her right mind, but that doesn’t mean she killed them.

Joanna Garstang, a consultant community paediatrician and designated doctor on a child death review panel in Birmingham, reviewed Folbigg’s diaries and submitted an expert witness report to the inquiry, released publicly on Tuesday.

“Much of my clinical work involves the investigation of unexpected child deaths, regularly working alongside police,” Garstang wrote. “In my opinion, the expressions of self-blame and guilt in Ms Folbigg’s diary fit with those described in the literature or that I have witnessed in my clinical and research practice. I do not consider them true confessions of guilt.”

Garstang said each of those comments was an “expression of self-blame in keeping with published literature” about bereaved parents. “Ms Folbigg is blaming herself for the deaths, she may be considering that her stress caused the deaths. This is in keeping with published literature and not of concern.”

Counsel assisting the inquiry, Sophie Callan, SC, foreshadowed last week that two psychiatrists and a psychologist would also give evidence this week about Folbigg’s diaries, none of whom was expected to say the diaries contained expressions of criminal guilt.

There’s a whole bunch of autoimmune diseases that have no cure, no specific blood test and no specific scan to diagnose them - but they are illnesses/diseases. Lupus is just one of them.

Go fund me is paused as they got the insurers to change their minds (with pressure from Missouri lawmakers I believe). The kiddos will get the drug they need.

I think performative christians would just latch onto these two and ignore the others: “blessed are those whose who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” and “blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake…” it’s probably not meant to mean zealots with a persecution complex, but that’s the way they’d spin it.

I’m from the UK and our disgusting government is shipping immigrants that arrive on small boats to Rwanda for some fucking reason. None of these people seeking a better place to live are actually from Rwanda. Never mind that our own Supreme Court ruled Rwanda is not a safe country. That’s where we’re ship people off to. It’s absolutely insane.

The other answers are correct but they also copy their mums once they’re old enough. I’m in the UK where it’s the norm to let your cats outdoors. When my neighbour’s kitten was old enough to be let out he used to follow my much older cat around and copy her. He watched my cat do a wee in the bushes and then copied her digging to cover it up. Just covering up his imaginary wee next to her! It was super cute, although my cat wasn’t that impressed with the intrusion.

When “converse” isn’t edgy enough.

It touches on it briefly, but refeeding syndrome is a killer and is very hard to treat even in hospital not in a war zone. Even if the war stopped tomorrow and food was abundant, there’s nowhere to treat patients who have been starving - more will die.

Yup, the airport provides the wheelchairs (and someone to push you) if you don’t travel with you own wheelchair. Even if you do travel with your own wheelchair, it’s always put in the hold, not the cabin. I’ve never needed to use a wheelchair ON the plane, just to get to it, but when you book special assistance in advance you’re asked if you can walk up the steps to the plane and whether you can walk through the cabin to your seat so arrangements can be made in advance.

If I had to guess I’d say the airport staff didn’t have the narrower “on board” wheelchair to hand and the pilot didn’t want to miss their take off slot.

Because that’s my question? I’m interested in workers’ preferences, not which option is more productive. Like you say, both are better than 5 days a week on-site. But despite both equating to around the same amount of time in total for the same pay, in practice the two options are pretty different.

I have two goddaughters, born 4 years apart. Each were due on 29th Feb, both arrived on the 1st March. I’m still disappointed by their lateness.

But in both cases the parents had decided to celebrate on the 1st of March on non-leap years, had they arrived on their due dates.

Does this mean Trump will have a mugshot released too? I bet he’ll pull that shit eating grin. Wouldn’t surprise me if he tries to give the thumbs up too.

Lemmy world are nazis?

My mums been in hospital for 10 weeks. She only 62 and was admitted for a fairly routine infection after chemo for breast cancer. Since she’s been in hospital I’ve lost count of all the things that have gone wrong but the most distressing thing is the hospital delirium she’s developed. I’d never have believed my mum could become so violent and abusive, it’s like she’s a completely different person. She has absolutely no agency over her body at the moment, she can’t even sit up unaided. It’s so horribly undignified that it’s completely cemented my decision to commit suicide once I get a terminal diagnosis (or a diagnosis that I know I couldn’t deal with graciously). I can’t have children so it’s a small comfort that I won’t inflict the pain and heartbreak I’m experiencing from my mum, but I don’t ever want to treat my partner how she’s treating my dad. I’m going out on my own terms if at all possible.

When it happened I thought the typeface was the issue rather than the word hobbit. But no.Here’s before and this is after. I can’t get my head around the fact that the production company sued this tiny sandwich shop. It’s so ridiculous!

My dumb TV is 15 years old. It’s a bit small for the space and there’s a W burned into it but you can only see it on static screens.

I would like a new one but it’s pretty low down on the list of things I need to buy with the 37p I manage to save each month.

I have well over 100 plants all planted in lechuza pon and they are thriving! It’s an absolute game changer for aroids. No soil in this household.
