Maybe project zomboid but I'm not sure yet

I’m a bit biased as I’ve owned PZ since 2016, but it’s insanely fun with friends and insanely immersive solo. I’m unsure what you’re looking to get out of it, but I’ve put ~400hrs into it and it’s come a long way but has slow development. Very good modding scene to cover things in the meantime however.

So I like roguelikes that have a sense of progression in them, it's hard to play something over and over and the only satisfaction they give out is "you went farther then before, here's some xo and coins"

It seems like it has base building and an organic sense of progression within a run, both make it appeal to me. But I'm just unsure of what I get out of putting 2 to 12 hours into a run and seeing it all be for naught when I die.

The tension and high stakes also appeal to me, fwiw. I'm not saying I shouldn't care about what I do in the game, I just want there to be something in it for me at the end.

Is the macro gameplay loop more than just getting better at the game so you can survive longer?

No, but the worse you do within a run the harder it gets later on. Things tend to spiral out of control on Project Zomboid and if you go in blind you will have some pleasant surprises that will definitely make you do 200 iq plays to solve it.

Exploration is a big part of the late game and it gets insanely difficult at some points. I do recommend boosting XP if you play alone (I put it to 2x) so you dont spend hours sitting in a house reading books to get mauled by a random zombie that was looking for a snack.

Im easily bored with games and I got a solid 200 hours before I dropped it.
