Love the first answer as, I have to get on my Linux soapbox here.

I remember first using Linux (Ubuntu 9.10 for those curious). One of the big ideas behind it was 'its your computer, do what you want'. That's why you can have access to Root or the Super User. Since its open source, root can do what it wants.

Android was initially built on Linux, but they have taken Root and turned it into a way to restrict users not just from sensitive things (like necessary system apps), but also from bloatware (looking at you Samsung). Years ago I had a phone that came with the NFL Network which I didn't want. Could I remove it? Of course not, I would have to be Root to do that!.

Sorry for the rant, but really, I should have access to anything on my phone if I want it. Give me a warning, make it so people can't get to it 'accidentally', but then let it be on me.

I want a game that is a standard sci fi/fantasy RPG, except the main characters each suffer from a mental health condition that affects their gameplay (and of course the story).

My brother (now deceased) had both schizophrenia and numerous personalities. He had visual and auditory hallucinations thanks to the schizophrenia. On top of that, in my last conversation with him, he mentioned that all his personalities ‘shared information’ except for one that was in denial. Because of that, when a different personality took over after that one, he would have no idea what happened during the time that denial personality was in control. Sadly, my brother passed after he had stopped taking medications for a week and decided to use computer duster (something he had finally got clean of) to sleep and never woke up.

Now, imagine that in a high sci fi or fantasy RPG. You might begin fighting and wasting energy on enemies who aren’t actually there, but you think they are. You can go into battle and no other party members will help because, as you find out after, those enemies weren’t really there. Maybe you become weak because of a would and have to get through a dangerous area to get to a hospital. There you find you never had an injury, it was a hallucination (based on a 911 call my brother made thinking he had slit his throat when he had not). Maybe you go to learn some key information from a character who then dies dies suddenly. However, you don’t remember any of it.

Most important though, in the end, you are still the hero and still save the day. The idea being that yes people with these mental health challenges struggle, but they aren’t monsters. My brother was one of the kindest people I know and loved to help people. A game like that, if done right, could help players understand what these conditions are actually like (not hollywoods bs) and show that they can still be heroes. I think that would be cool

Many years ago Inworked at an Arby’s inside a food court. A man and woman came in, and she ordered a Jamocha shake while he got a free cup of water. They then went back into the mall.

About 20 minutes later they come back and he complains about a fly in his water. The assistant manager (I was just a cashier) said sorry and gave him a new cup of water.

“What are you going to do to make it up to me?” Seriously? It was free, we could give you 10 times what you paid and it’d still be $0. Plus, the fly probably came from you going out in the mall. They didn’t get their way so she asked for a refund on the shake and got that. Ridiculous if you ask me.

Been out of college for years now, but pick a quality backpack. Sounds weird, but between work and school and whatever else, sometimes it feels like you live out of that thing. Maybe that was just me

Oh thank goodness I thought it was just me. When I read that I thought 'dang covid messed me up'

Been a few years since having covid, but my wife and I both feel like we lost some memory and brain power from it, even though we were both vaccinated and had less evere symptoms than others.

In our 30s by the way

Definitely miss the dedicated fingerprint reader. Had a metal case once that came with a fairly thick (tempered glass I think) screen protector. Everything worked great except the fingerprint reader.

Removable batteries may come back since the European Union has mandated all smartphones have them by 2027

I did see that, of all phones and manufacturers, the Kyocera DuraForce Pro 3 on Verizon actually has removable batteries (and an sd card slot).

I work in tech, but for a financial company so what I’ve gathered is from required compliance training.

Large financial institutions are obligated to block and report attempted transactions on blocked accounts. That would likely include blocks on trading accounts I imagine.

As far as actually seizing it, I don’t have solid info but in a mostly digital finance world it probably just involves transferring access and ownership controls to a government entity (by the institutions).

Hope that helps

Agreed. Family plan is priced similar to Spotify, and ad free YouTube is a nice bonus

Yeah, definitely more effort than a lot of them I’ve seen. Also the first to make me kind of uncomfortable, but good job and good effort

Birdemic comes to mind. Bad acting, slow start, weird dialog, and of course the birds!

I feel a lot of this is just obliviousness. People are so sucked into what they are doing they don't notice anyone around them.

It's the reason shopping at Walmart can be so frustrating for me. People pause and stop at random spots (and I don't mean to get items).

Great news! Thanks for sharing OP!

When I was in college I had a Zoology professor who mentioned, on multiple occasions, that Malaria had killed '50% of all humans since man's inception".

In fact, on 2 different exams, we had to draw the lifecycle of the genus plasmodium (the thing that causes malaria). Crazy.

What sucks is it would be easily doable.

Before smartphones were big I had a Samsung Messager (I think) with a slide out keyboard). Why not? A slide out keyboard would be sweet, and then you could choose to enable the digital keyboard if you wanted.

Wonder if they make a phone case with a keyboard (they certainly make the bluetooth keyboards for phones)

Edit: did some looking. It looks like they used to make these in a way I was thinking, such as this one

They don't seem to make them that way now (at least not for phones). I did run into a phone that has a new-ish phone that has a physical keyboard

Who is this and what did he do? See OP posted in3 communities, but other than him being a mod of lw classic, no info

Nice. The apocalyptic background is a nice touch

Do we know what they are butthurt about? There is never an excuse for what they are doing, but I’m curious what happened to set it off if a reason I known

I agree. Got to start creating communities so that Lemmy becomes more interesting

Yep people are ridiculous

Gotcha. Thanks.

There is an app for that!

I have an S22 Ultra and googled and found an app that will do that (even with the cutout camera).

its called aodNotify.

This is the video that I found that showed it, 6:40 seconds in (or I think he has chapters listed)

What's the current name?

Was looking for what a cane corso is (dog breed) and then why they stare. I did find this (haven't read through yet). Hope it helps

Monty Python worthy

I have a somewhat similar issue, but not because of rooting.

I want to use F-Droid for some of their apps, and be able to just download apk's.

The problem is that my work uses 'Microsoft Intune' for email access and such. Turns out, if I try to install anything from F-Droid, I get a message like 'Your Admin has blocked access'.

As you can imagine, this made my blood boil, but I actually use my work email and Teams (even though its not mandated to have it on your phone). The work around is to delete my work profile, install the apps, and then recreate, but that doesn't account for updates.

Frustrating

Some of the Samsungs that had a bixby button you could get an app that would let you customize it to go to Google Assistant. That was cool.

Is it on the app or play store (not seeing it on play store or online). Would like to give it a try.

Channelling Lemmy Kilmister? Awesome!

Gorgeous!

Thread got me wondering how I could find more communities, so I googled and I'm gonna try looking through https://browse.feddit.de/
