I wonder what those do with people who live in apartment buildings, lol.

I am not disagreeing with your experience. I am disagreeing with cursive being a "made-up thing that nobody uses".

I mean... They disabled desktop registration, then disabled registration from any non-official client, then can randomly ban people who try to make their usage of the platform more private/anonymous... Then there is censorship, at least here. And I have heard of at least one case of cooperation with German LE, so it's not "untouchable" for Westerners too.

It was never safe with such an approach of "I can close my eyes and pretend the law doesn't apply to me" even in the West. If it was hostile to privacy and anonymity by design, it was a matter of time until it became wide open to Western LE too. The sheer amount of compromate it had on users was a ticking time bomb.

"Highly decentralized complexity" - what does that even apply to? That would apply to Matrix, XMPP, Simplex, especially Briar. Even Signal can technically be selfhosted (whether it is feasible is another question), in Telegram you can't have even that because the server is closed.

Telegram.

Although there still is not a similar way to acquire your first Monero, the minimum amount for any trade there. Same problem as Bisq)

TG selling out? Was it not always like this, with all its censorship and attempts to combat anonymity? Weird to put it next to Tails, Tor or Localmonero.

Respectfully disagree. I myself went for embarrassingly long without knowing English cursive (only knew it for my native language), so I know the difference, and it DOES matter. As soon as most of my reading materials (and thus notes) became English, I had no choice other than to learn cursive, because otherwise writing is painfully slow.

There are keyboards, but usually computers/tablets/phones are banned in class. Our high school did not ban laptops on lessons (it was a very liberal school), but few people used them anyway. Then there are tests, solutions in which can also get too long to quickly write without cursive. Even here, teachers did not accept assigmnents and tests in a typed form, except during remote learning. Not to mention the formulas, which would be troublesome to type out, doubt kids would be fluent in LaTeX.

Fair, and I guess accepting typed papers is more common in universities. But schools still don't. Mostly because tradition is hard to break, in large part because a lot of people (especially elderly) would find it uncomfortable to read from a screen as opposed to paper. I can relate because I am this way myself))

I don't think that whether it has a privacy impact even matters. What matters is how it demonstrates Mozilla's attitude towards user consent.

I wonder if this would be on all international devices and not just on the Chinese local ones.

Although indeed not getting one again, as apparently unlocking the bootloader is either hard or impossible.

I am mostly concerned about potentially needing specific Big Tech implementations for them in some way... I don't mind using, say, KeepassXC for it, because it is independent from any account or hardware, as well as easily backupable. But NOT anything tied to a Google or MS account.

Maybe I am misunderstanding something, but Paypal says it restricts what passkeys can be used, so it is apparently possible:

Passkeys are currently available for eligible personal accounts. An eligible Apple or Android device is required to create a passkey.

Desktop client does not even have e2e, lol. (I don't know if there are third-party options that do).

From what I've seen, there are some blobs. At least Telegram-FOSS says:

Several proprietary parts were removed from the original Telegram client, including Google Play Services for the location services, HockeySDK for self-updates and push notifications through Google Cloud Messaging. Location sharing functionality is restored using OpenStreetMap.

Same page is where I learned you cannot register from third-party clients btw. Not nearly as big of a blow as removal of desktop registration, but still gross that you'd have to touch a partially-proprietary official app first.

Yeah, if I am not mistaken, this has happened in Iran - the registration confirmation messages just wouldn't arrive.

I really doubt an average Joe would buy a new computer once the old OS goes end-of-life. Joe would just continue using an EOL system and hope everything is alright.

I am looking forward to more non-tech communities.

If I can't add your passkey to my local KeepassXC database, I am not using your passkey.

Gen Z here. Even if I could (somehow) afford an iPhone, I can't imagine buying them because they're just so locked-down... How can you use a phone you can't even access file system on? Hell, even load apps the manufacturer doesn't like? AND sell a kidney for this? Around me, iPhones are a minority but still prevalent, but I am living in a major, pretty wealthy city.

remember kids, not your keys, not your coins

I am opposed to dating apps because they're bad for privacy. Not only are you pretty much encouraged to have a photo of your face online (which is compltely off-limits for me), but to do so in presence of A LOT OF HORNY MEN. No thanks, I would rather pick up a hobby where more socialization occurs naturally.

silicon valley invented the marshrutka

IRC clients don't have loads of telemetry like Discord does. And IRC is a protocol instead of a platform, so there isn't a single set of servers hosting and logging ALL conversations.

Gen Z here. Only "age-inappropriate" things I found in the woods were condoms and syringes :(

I don't see a "year of the Linux desktop" happening, but rather its share growing slowly over the years. Windows would probably not have one big event that ends its dominance, but it can be a death of a thousand cuts.

Servers can be hosted by anyone; there is usually no account needed to join the chat; it would not randomly demand a phone number or an ID; it does not get pissed over people not using a very specific piece of bloated spyware... So nope, not against.

Except what YT Premium does is easily doable with free tools.

I'd say the most extreme bullshit began with Windows 10. At least the threat of "upgrading" to it was the final push to Linux for me.

"Cryptobros" =/= "people using crypto", because this is a legitimate usecase. You can see it discussed on Lemmy too. This is how I can pay for my VPS while my card doesn't work. This is how I would pay for a service even if my card did work, but I didn't want to attach pretty much my real name to it. But yea, I agree that it might be complicated logistically. Have seen services where you can buy prepaid cards for crypto - at least that should work.

If you are into collecting, that is. I am kind of triggered by the binary "physical vs. non-owned" because physical is not for everyone, if I was dead set on paying and the media was not available DRMless, I would rather buy a digital copy plus pirate a DRMless one corresponding to it. Buying a disk only to throw it out after ripping is wasteful. If you keep them, they take up too much space and are too inconvenient to use compared to a few external drives.

We do have new playgrounds, but the problem is that they're very sanitized and only really suitable for preschoolers. Tweens usually just wander around without any exact place to go.

who tf goes online without blocking ads

I cannot really be happy about being on Librewolf, because I am very afraid Firefox might eventually ditch MV2 as well. Mozilla is dependent on Google and is known for questionable choices, so...

That would be repeating the same mistake. You don't change one company for the other, you choose an app that is not dependent on an account, like KeepassXC.

Are you prohibited from covering your face in the stores like this?

I don't think it would be enforceable for everyone hosting servers for themselves. I personally use XMPP, Matrix and recently Simplex.

neighborhoods are better for kid stuff

Maybe it's just me growing up in the city, but I would not want to raise my kid in an American-style suburb. Imagine being a tween but never being able to go anywhere without your parents, because everything is too far away to walk or bike and public transport is not available. Yikes.

Costs a fortune, hard to repair, no SD slot, no headphone jack, until recently could not be used with the chargers you have for everything else... At least for me it is a "no".

And a large chunk of this 95% would see that their hardware is not supported, sigh and stay on 10, gradually conditioning themselves to ignore the upgrade notifications.
