Can you guys help explain it to someone completely inexperienced?

I had Twitter but only used it for following music venues to see upcoming events and bars for happy hour updates. I have a Mastodon account but only played with it for a few minutes because i didn't really get it. I don't understand following a person. What can one person have to say that i would care enough about to download an app. What am i missing?

It wasn't why Mastodon. It was why Twitter or twitter-like apps.

Only if you man in it a "you people" kind of way - like y'all need to stay with your own kind- or something like that.

As my mom would say- I woke up on the right side of the dirt.

I do think it's shifted from people to groups. Still has 'my cousin's new baby' but also much more hobbies, cities, marketplace, and political groups.

Cool. Can you explain what that is, please? And what's the white stick thing?

They're so cute!! My DIL doesn't want to see her family for Thanksgiving so we rented a house out of town for the weekend. It has llamas and I'm so excited to just sit and watch them. I hope i get to pet them!

Started funny, then went too far in and lost it's edge.

We're all going out of town so my DIL has an excuse for skipping her family's Thanksgiving.

I think we already know who the real criminals sre.

I have to fax docs a lot. Couple of years ago we started using stonefax so it's like an email. I wish the faxing was the worst part - most take 1-3 calls to the doc to get them sent back.

Nice fucking kitties

I'm in Texas in a blue bubble - more than i had realized i guess. 80% of the people i know are blue. I work in public education, so most of the red people i know were considering voting blue because of the push for school vouchers. I rarely see maga stuff and the yard signs around me were 80% Harris. Because of that i was completely shocked last Tuesday by the popular vote and it's left me kind of disoriented. My husband works in redville, so he's disgusted and exhausted. My adult sons are sad, mad, scared. My DIL has called me crying a few times - her parents are trumpsters and she wants to cut them out. Luckily we have enough cash on hand to help the kids get passports ASAP and enough savings to briefly go out of state/country if she needs healthcare. I 70% believe that Republican infighting will slow them down and it won't be as bad as feared, 30% ready for the leopards!

I would say this a thousand times before i would say snap.

Mom's visa is about to expire. She doesn't think they'll renew it and she's afraid to try.

A fine that will never be paid

I was so disappointed to put my glasses on and learn that Led Zeppelin is not the new head of the EPA.

Similar things have been written over and over and over. Screaming into the void. Obama wore a tan suit.

When your non-citizen family members go ... I'm losing a school kid next week. I think her mom is scared so she's going home. Kid is non-verbal, non-ambulatory, super sweet and doing well at school. What will her life look like in Venezuela? Dad is staying, but he can't work and take care of the kiddo.

And then we will have sofa king Vance.

The Bezos thing is really pissing me off! Now i have to drive all over town to pick up things i could have had delivered.

My husband always says, "Stop biting me!" but I think he's faking.

Ummm....dad...why are the locks on the inside?

"Why is there so much yarn everywhere?!"

Two weeks later when the weather cools off - "Can you make a hat for me?"

Period expected in 2 days can mean it's time to change your water filter or clean out your fridge or whatever. And the symptoms can be used to mean something else

I don't think mine shows weather. Is there a setting for that somewhere?

The waste of it kills me! We make a good living and we do a lot of fun things, but we have friends that have and spend a lot more than we do. Sometimes it bothers me that what gets thrown away on crap is more than what a lot of people make.

Here they call them $30,000 millionaires - people who are living beyond their means in nice apartments uptown, driving expensive cars, bars, etc. - everything on credit, which will crash later, instead of living a regular ok life today. It's an old term so its now likely $60k.

Behind the Bastards podcast does shows on both, i believe.

There have been several polls. We're older and more female than you think.

I get that it's annoying, but we're sad, and angry, and scared, and we don't know where to go. Maybe someone will make us a community called "Now what?" where we can cry, shout, wallow a bit, and then make a plan for survival.

I'm more worried about dying of some completely treatable illness, either because our politicians pretend it's not real or because I can't afford the treatment. I'm also concerned about using all of my retirement savings to live, dying broke, and having nothing to leave to my kids, who will likely suffer the same fate.

Reach out to family or friends or anyone who can be with them now.

I'm working on this, though i usually say - I'd rather get bitched at for doing it wrong than for not doing it. At my job it's to emphasize the stupidity of the task and the lack of training on a shitty system.

Maybe getting involved with local charitable organizations could help you find like-minded people - donating clothing or food or time to shelters for women leaving abusive situations.
