In before he announces his democratic primary run.

If Amazon started charging for smart-home solutions, they'd essentially be making the case for FOSS solutions like home assistant.

Granted, there will always be a contingent of people who are unwilling to learn how to self-manage that tech, but there are certainly enough people who are willing that they should think twice about heading down that path.

I think everyone ought to strip their media of drm, but you should know that personal use does not qualify as fair use under US law

I can see why people are quick to think this but I don't see any compelling evidence this is the case, and as others have pointed out it would be impractical for them to do so.

More likely they use it for consumer lock-in and to collect data through its api endpoints. Collecting media activity and smart home device information is valuable enough on its own, before even approaching the value of collecting recorded audio.

They can already intuit consumer habits/word of mouth exposure from other associated data with your online activity. After locking down all my other privacy, the ads I get are far less relevant to me, even though I have a number of smart listening devices in my home

Idk how this season is going to end but the writers have definitely been building toward something.

None of those things matter if he can't campaign effectively to beat his opponent.

You're seeing the people who either didn't agree he should step down or agreed but didn't think they'd actually do it.

I will always point to mlk as a response to this question:

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizens Councillor or the Ku Klux Klanner but the white moderate who is more devoted to order than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says, "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically feels that he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time; and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

As someone who is routinely accused of being a bad actor, I have to say I find this speculation to be somewhat paranoid.

I think people generally overestimate the commonality of their own perspective.

I dont know why anyone likes Newsom. Whitmer is a far better choice.

Found the liberal.

This isn't really true, even with being extremely vague.

Liberalism, as described by Locke, was primarily concerned with individual liberty (as mentioned), but included in those liberties was the right to private property. In fact, he was among the first to describe it as a 'natural law'.

US liberals co-opt the label with emphasis on the social liberties, and neo-liberals co-opt the label with emphasis on the personal property.

Leftist politics, being primarily oriented along a materialist axis, is concerned with both social and economic liberation and identifies systems of oppression in both governance and capital owners. Referring to 'liberals' as 'leftist' ignores the central ideological focus of leftist politics to begin with.

Fair point, Margot Robbie

A point of caution:

A large company absolutely could come in and absorb the majority of lemmy traffic and build proprietary code and features on top of the main protocol, eventually making the open source protocol obsolete and supplanting it as a paid/closed-source service. It has been done repeatedly by tech companies, and it is the main reason many people distrust Meta's interest in joining the fediverse.

For all the reasons you just mentioned, we should fight tooth and nail against that from happening, but we should at least be aware of the threat.

There's a lot of "AI is theft" comments in this thread, and I'd just like to take a moment to bring up the Luddite movement at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution: the point isn't that 'machines are theft', or 'machines are just a fad', or even 'machines are bad' - the point was that machines were the new and highly efficient way capital owners were undermining the security and material conditions of the working class.

Let's not confuse problems that are created by capitalistic systems for problems created by new technologies - and maybe we can learn something about radical political action from the Luddites.

I tried using outlook this year for the first time in 15 years, and immediately NOPED the fuck out when I noticed it displayed ads in-line with my inbox.

And then there are those rumors that they want to display ads in the settings panel. Fuck Microsoft, they have ZERO trustworthiness in my book

It wouldn't surprise me if musk thought this as well

What a load of horse shit.

Just like with hue, and Chromecast, and Android TV, and a million other smart devices, it's perfectly lawful (and IMHO necessary) for individuals to launch their own integrations with their the products they own. People don't need their bullshit "service", and by buying the vehicle they have a legally protected right to alter it and it's software for their own use.

That they bullied this guy into taking down the repo despite what the law protects him to do is disgusting, if not also predictable.

I hope someone with the time and resources goes to the matt with one of these shit companies and make them own up to their exploitative practices.

I for one will be altering my Mazda how I want and sharing my alterations to get around their shit subscription model with everyone I can.

US based architect here: this is the correct answer

This isn't at all surprising, in fact a lot of people were trying to point out at the outset that the longer the war dragged on, the larger and more sustained Russia's military would grow.

Ukraine simply doesn't have the population to keep up indefinitely.

The sensationalized headline aside, I wish people would stop being so dismissive about reports of advancement here. Nobody but those at the fringes are freaking out about sentience, and there are plenty of domains where small improvements in the models can fuck up big parts of our defense/privacy/infrastructure if they end up being successful. It really doesn't matter if computers have subjective experience, if that computer is able to decrypt AES-192 or identify keystrokes from an audio recording.

We need to be talking about what happens after AI becomes competent at even a handful of tasks, and it really doesn't inspire confidence if every bit of news is received with a "LOL computers aren't conscious GTFO".

Personally, i'm worried that the biden administration is underestimating the electoral importance of his decision to continue supporting Israel's genocide against Palestinians.

No matter how many Palestians get killed or schools and hospitals get bombed, when it finally stops, the US will parade around that brief moment of peace as some great, masterful example of diplomacy.

There will be no retribution or justice for the Palestinian people.

I don't give a shit about the bells and whistles they're adding to cars and the infotainment systems. I am absolutely LIVID that they are starting to lock bits of hardware (or the complete functionality of that hardware) behind subscription paywalls. If i ever buy a car and discover they've locked the heated seats behind a monthly fee, i'm tearing the infotainment system out of the fucking dash and leaving it on fire in front of the dealers house.
