Ben, thank you for your efforts.

Thats a cool feature for sure but I don't trust opera.

I feel like I see the same kind of post everyday.

For the last month and a half, I have not used reddit at all. Lemmy has most of the communities that I was a part of.

But I get that, some niche subreddits still don't have communities here on lemmy. A few of my friends, stopped using lemmy because it didn't have the subs they were active in.

Bad bots, bad bots whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?

They have a ton of phone models, it's gonna be difficult task for them to maintain all of them beyond 5 years.

The 5+ years updates could be just for their flagship/premium line up.

This is indeed sad news. I made my friends (who don't care about free software) switch from google meet to jitsi for video calls just the other month.

The only thing that got them sold on jitsi was that it required no login.

You are right. I always knew growing apart would be something I'll have to deal with. It sucks that I'll lose some people in the process. That's life I guess.

Voyager web app is quite impressive tbh. One of the best web apps I have ever used.

That being said, the infinity app feels like home, I have been using to for over 3 years after all.

Doesn't that violate Youtube's ToS ?

Its a meta search engine that you can configure. It's also selfhostable.

Onlyoffice is also a good option.

Not a movie, but I remember trying to do kamehameha when I was 8 years old or something after watching Dragon ball Z.

R.I.P tachiyomi, I have used it for years. Kind of sad to see it go. Are the forks also abandoning development ? I have been using the TachiJ2k fork for the past 3 years or so.

I guess I will be shifting to kotatsu soon.

Yeah, they banned encrypted apps thinking that only terrorists require encrypted messaging.

Yup, looks like it's not my cup of tea. I just bought it to play with my friends. I guess I'll refund it and get something else.

I feel the same way. Unfortunately friends and family just doesn't use anything other than Whatsapp. I've tried moving some of them to signal but they were back on WhatsApp within a week or two.

  • 2 of the guys work for the same startup. One of them is the main 'problem guy'. This guy quickly embodies the traits of the crowd he spends the most time with. So It's possible that take 1 is the case.

  • All of us are out of college. We are not too far apart, so we are able to meet up easily if we want to (for now).

On a different note- The start of this friend cricle was centered around gaming. I think some people might have different rules (subconciously) for deciding if a person belongs to a certain group. Maybe.. just maybe the fact that I'm not able to play games with them regularly made him (the problem guy) subconsciously think that I'm not part of the group anymore. Especially since I do not adhere to the core values (gaming everyday). It's possible that has caused a seperation in the group. I think I'm overthinking this. So I'll leave it at that.

  • Take 3 seems like the most possible. I had noticed some signs way back. Now it is way more fleshed out.

Now that I look at it, the 'toxic' nature may be a sum of all of the above mentioned takes.

My recommendstions would be -

  1. Linux Mint / vanilla debian

  2. Fedora / Nobara

  3. Opensuse tumbleweed (Like fedora, but rolling release and has btrfs snapshots configured out of the box)

  4. Endavour OS / vanilla arch ( if you want to configure everything manually)

  5. NixOS (very different distro, you can configure your entire system with a single file)

People have a misconception that Linux Mint is a newbie distro but don't let that stop you from using it. It's quite stable and will serve you very well.

For Desktop Environment -

You can try out XFCE, it doesnt look great out of the box, but it has all the options you'll need to make it look to your liking.

Then there is also Cinnamon, it doesn't have many configuration options but is really nice in general. The flagship version of Linux Mint comes with Cinnamon.

I hope more newer phones get supported by them.

I have a samsung galaxy s23 and I need to scratch my de-google / custom rom itch.

Fighting street thugs in the Yakuza games. The man can't even walk peacefully for 2 mins.

The problem is even worse with Yakuza 7. The RPG fighting mechanic makes me feel like fighting is a chore. To add to that, you cant even run away from these fights.

I used to make time for gaming with my friends every day by sacrificing my sleep. I only realized how much it messed with my health once I started getting a full 8 hours of sleep. Now I mostly play during the weekends.

Yes Aniyomi is safe to use.

You may also like saikou. It has fewer sources compared to aniyomi but it's a good app, especially if you prefer to use anilist.

Many developers have their FOSS apps as paid apps in the play store, so that people who really want to support the dev can do so from the play store itself.

I appreciate your honest answer. I want to completely own my data, so I would not go the Cloud route. After all the Cloud is basically someone else's computer.

They should find a better fitting name than MemoryCache. Thanks for this comment.

If you put aside the crypto crap, Brave is an okay browser. Sometimes I use it for web development. But I don't like the direction the company is heading towards.

Most of the time I use Firefox with Extensions and Librewolf for everything. Firefox has been my go-to for years and I sure hope it stays that way.

The problem person has become an integral part of the group. Ejecting him would be very difficult as 3 of the other guys have sort of become like him and will be in support of him.

To the problem person, its always "us" vs "them" or "us" vs "another person". I have tried talking to him in person, but he always seems to dismiss logical solutions to arguments. Changes topics quickly and He always has to find someone to take his side, so that he wins.

I know for a fact that he can be a decent guy when he is with a group of decent people. But it's always the negative traits of the group that he ultimately tries to embody (unknowingly). I don't want to paint him as a villain or anything, it's just something I've observed over the years. Then again I may be wrong.

Like you mentioned, I definitely won't sweep it under the carpet. It's never a solution.

  • Kakoune should also be added under Text editors.

  • Yazi is a good terminal based file manager

  • nnn is another file manager

  • rtorrent for a terminal based torrent client

  • nushell - a different kind of shell.

  • starship prompt

  • weechat for IRC

Assuming that you are dualbooting from a single storage device - If you have some money to spare go and buy a second ssd. Keeping both OSes in separate storage devices will result in far lesser chances of screwing up.

Cool rice. How did you get that neat looking bar at the top ? Did you use something like polybar ?

Oh boy, I'm excited for this one.

I also think discord nitro is kind of B.S . The only reason I still use discord is because my friends use it.

I wish there were similar features in Matrix clients like Element. Just the voice channels feature will be enough for me.

Revolt chat is a good alternative. It lacks in features but its pretty good for an FOSS project. I tried to convince my friends to use it but they crawled back to discord after 2 days.

I was in a similar situation an year ago. I'm still not where I want to be, but I'm getting there.

Ideally, a routine which incorporates enough physical exercise, challenge and rest will get you to a much better state of mind.

There's a reason why many of the comments on this post are about physical activities. It just works.

  • Try to listen/think before you start talking.
  • Listen to your parents even if you don't feel like it.
  • Stop watching the naughty stuff because it's bad for you.

We do meet in person once or twice a month. Once I start bringing up anything related to this, the problem guy will just change the topic or run off to somewhere else.
