How do I get gifs to show up in preview?

Hi, been trying to upload some of my old stuff from reddit onto here, but I can't seem to get the gifs to show up in preview? Sometimes they don't show up at all, other times as a static image, but I've definitely seen animated gif previews on here! Anyone have insight?

So far it seems gifs on the fediverse are really hit-or-miss. My Mastodon instance displays them sometimes, and not others.

I swear half of the posts on the relay subreddit previously were just various gif playback issues. It seems like it should be easy but in reality is surprisingly nuanced and difficult
