I've been using Lemmy for a week now and honestly I think so. I really like the way it's setup and now that the hug of death is over things are starting to work smoothly. This service is designed for third party apps and over time they will probably become better than what we had for Reddit.
Everything is possible. Fuck spez!!
@mjhrrs don't expect reddit to die, it's too big, it'll just become a bit smaller and fedi will become much bigger but i don't think it'll surpass reddit userbase, it's nowhere near even tho it's grown massively, reddit is truly truly big at 430 million monthly active users, for reference the whole lemmy+kbin have 330k total users (not active users) today. that's 1/1303th of reddit. Surely a lot, but we need to ramp the numbers the fuck up to get to, say, 1/100 (4.3 million active users)
