Narwhal 2 should just be a Lemmy app - let Reddit die.

Wait, free access for months until he figures out pricing?

He has disposable money?

And some users in that thread shitting on other devs for "not wanting to work with reddit" when it's the opposite.

I make the usual car analogy. It's like if your government says "this freeway will be toll based in order to pay for maintenance, the toll will be symbolic and reflects the actual price". Everyone (even if reluctantly because free is better) agreeing with the decision because it's true that maintenance needs to be paid. Then they come and say the toll fee is an unreasonable $100. People will revolt and build an alternative freeway or just pay?

The app was barely monetized (ads and an in app purchase to remove ads).

They stated that they had to remove the ads, which tells me that they did so to be temporarily considered a “non-commercial” app and get a temporary exception.

They’re talking about implementing a subscription for the v2 version but they’ve clearly not figured out a workable price point yet and they’re already stressing over high usage users and charging them an overage fee if they hit a certain usage.

Honestly sounds like it’s going to be a disaster and they’re figuring it out as they go along.

It is indeed very strange that this is the only dev that can manage to work/negotiate with reddit
