How are Lemmy federated servers handling cross platform posting, commenting and upvoting?

What are some good resources to learn and get an overview of how federation between servers is actually handled?

I am aware that data is shared / duplicated between instances, but I want to know the actual technical scope of it – and how is the data flowing and being stored.
