an idiot with internet connection.

This is the gist: https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html

Basically, big companies can destroy decentralised network from within once big enough people adopt it.

What they do is

  1. Embrace - adopt the network with their own proprietary system, like Threads for example, as opposed to other system in the fediverse right now that are open source.

  2. Extend - spend resources like money, manpower, and even extensive knowledge on how to expand and make the network a better place with a lot more features while simultaneously promoting and making so that only their proprietary app can access it in the best way.

  3. Exterminate / Extinguish - once they have good amount of users, they can start crippling the other side, like maybe Threads can see posts from Lemmy and Mastodon but not the other way around, people are gonna think that Threads is superior and leaving the original instances. They can also pull back resources like even the people who used to work on developing the network that they used to give so generously before, and such the maintainer now has no way to keep up in developing the network.

Also known as the EEE tactic https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish

I thought it's just because the british empire is like a plague that's spreading everywhere..

more niche / specific communities are just starting here but on reddit they're already thriving. I'll visit reddit from time to time to keep up with the latest thing in those, though my time there has been cut significantly.

in other hand, I really wish we could stop with reddit-related questions in this community... ask those in /c/reddit instead

I use it since they cripple the NSFW access for 3rd party apps, and most of my front page are videos, it loads so.... slooww..... and tapping one video will bring you to this tiktok-like interface where if you swipe up it'll load the next video in that subreddit instead of the next post in my front page.

comparing that to Sync for Reddit that doesn't experience any stutter and loads the video blazing fast, the experience really feels like a downgrade...

there are also the little stuffs like less customizability for color schemes, hiding awards, comment padding, font sizes, font styles, etc.

Not going to sleep even harder

The ugly ones usually taste better, just check that the ugliness isn't caused by molds

Nah man, my friend plays GTA and the next morning he got hit by a bicycle, that's very dangerous

this is a game from the same developer as The Messenger, I really like The Messenger, especially the humour, I just wish at least they bring that humour in Sea of Stars as well

This won't work on android because changing icon is trivial lmao

two movies came to me pretty vividly,

Spirited Away (2001), no-face is pretty scary even now, but the scene that disturbs me is at the beginning when Chihiro came back and find her parents have turned into pigs...

MirrorMask (2005), fittingly I watched this when I was sick with high fever and for so long I thought this movie was a fever dream, it haunted me for days until my fever subsides. I don't remember anything about the plot, just that the atmosphere and aesthetic are nauseating

Time to pose as 8 year old and make bank

Really? Is he counting the rebirth of the universe?

Lol, more than half of my frontpage doesn't even show up, it's just the same subs over and over again. Made me check Lemmy more often

I imagine people are gonna abuse it for posting highly controversial takes that's borderline immoral if not illegal... People already do even with associated username, imagine if it's untraceable (by regular users) back to you. The nazis are gonna come out en masse, both who are trolling and actually serious. Seems like a moderation nightmare.

I think where you are (country) is kinda relevant?

there's a couple of points here

  1. current website is version 0.17.4 (you can check this at the very bottom)
  2. version 0.18 is ready, but there's no captcha yet (the thing where you have to identify objects on squares, or click a box that'll turn into checkmark)
  3. without captcha, bot accounts (not real users) can register to the site too easily
  4. so we're gonna wait for version 0.18.1, the one with captcha active.
  5. the Jerboa app, the android app for browsing Lemmy has also recently updated, and will only work for Lemmy version 0.18 up, thus it's advised to use another app or just the web for now

note : the site version 0.18 is already out for the main Lemmy instance, which is lemmy.ml, but lemmy.world (where we are now) is gonna wait for version 0.18.1

And translate feature for titles and comments.

this one is probably gonna have to use a translation service that isn't free and would ask for subscription / ongoing cost.

the API isn't free, corporation use for navigation paid huge amount to Google for their maps.

and also from ::: spoiler spoiler selling our data :::

Can't you just put in totally black color? Users would be able to see their reflection on the screen

the way you phrase it I thought your brother is a laser jet lol

Just follow those and hope each instance have different users that post different contents. As a rule of thumb, maybe just follow the one with the biggest amount of subscribers, if it happens to be on your main server, then just follow that one.

I don't have Steam Deck but I have experience with UConnect, and it's easily the worst 3rd party launcher out of the others. Constantly saying that I have no internet connection despite it working very well, I can't even launch games because of it.

Yeah! We're not redditors, we're Lemmings now

Brave browser, based on chromium has an ad reward program that you have to opt-in

fake - OP is actually a guy

gay - OP is happy for seeing a guy

they charge you PER PAGE??!

I can hear the cartoon honk sound

Just repeatedly slam the car

There's also display name separated from username, like mine for example. So it doesn't matter at all, don't even need personal server

yes, that's what's I've been using, and I know I can see posts from all instances if I just browse All instead of Local

what I'm kind of looking for (and wondering) is that a way to... uh, like, check? on another instance, and see what hot posts are trending there just on their front page without getting mixed and competing for places in /All

so for example, I'm here on lemmy.world, and after browsing a while I got curious on what's trending on sh.itjust.works, so I go to shi.tjust.works and I can see all the currently hot posts only on shit just works without me getting logged out because I have no account on shitjustworks.

in lack of better words, maybe emulating (or simulating?) a 'centralized' feel, ya feel me?

what is the solution then? iMessage become an open platform?

yeah I know, crowns have been there since prehistoric times. I guess it's just the easiest way to signify authority.

Then they'll turn their gaze to the Fediverse

DUN DUN DUN DUUUUN

Zedge comes to mind. A site for buying ringtones (among other things like notification tones and wallpapers) or at least barred you from downloading the "premium" ones without subscription.
