Since we're all using Lemmy, an open source, decentralized, self hostable platform, wouldn't suggesting Matrix make much more sense?

I host a Matrix and Lemmy server. Even if Signal is completely trustworthy now, will it always be? It isn't my server and it's a single point of attack for anybody (including governments) to insert (or demand) a backdoor.

It'd be great if this was easily installable outside of gnome. I'd love an easy way to do this on sway or hyprland. Unless there already is a way?

Anybody used this yet? Will this be the btrfs killer I've been hearing it might be?

If your goal is privacy/avoid tracking then you should be using GrapheneOS

It may not be perfect yet, but ill take the superior design approach (decentralized and self hostable) any day. The details can be improved over time. Matrix can improve its metadata handling, signal will never be decentralized and self hostable.

On top of that, if you get your friends and family on your instance like I have, the metadata isnt even a problem since everything is contained on my server anyway.

Prolly not exactly what you're looking for but an option nonetheless: make jam. The sugar helps preserve, plus put it in jars and put the jar in the fridge, lasts a long time

I cycle between 4 pairs of shoes in summer, two pairs of boots in winter, and one pair of all year shoes. I have had them all for over ten years. Tips:

1. Buy Goodyear welted shoes
2. Use shoe trees
3. Don't wear the same pair two days in a row

I also prefer to buy shoes made in UK, Italy, or US but that is just preference for perceived quality and definitely higher paid workers than most countries that mass produce shoes.

If you want a specific recommendation go with Allen Edmond Strandmoks. That's my all year pair. Great shoes.

I've been using secret option 3- netbird. Kernel wireguard support, completely self hostable, and very active development.

Gentoo is fantastic for me on my home desktop. I love the rolling release nature and customization opportunities. Portage is so powerful.

For all of my work computers I use either ubuntu or kubuntu with sway. I love gentoo but with work devices I don't have time to tinker. There are also many programs I need for work that offer .deb installs that aren't in gentoo repos nor overlays.

For servers I love Debian.

Sometimes I love it sometimes I hate it. Sometimes I hate it at first then grow to love it. Radiohead is a great example of change that I love. First album was mediocre rock, second was much better rock, third was one of the best albums of all time layered... space rock? Then the biggest shift of all to Kid A. Over and over again.

David Bowie is another example of successfully changing sound over and over.

Beastie Boys went from a hardcore band to hip hop.

I know there are examples of bands where I didn't like the change but I guess I remember the ones I like more. Weezer and Smashing Pumpkins are two bands that got worse over time, although they didn't change their sound up quite as much as the above mentioned.

AntennaPod is great, I used it for years. I eventually switched to self hosting AudioBookShelf which does audiobooks, ebooks, and podcasts. One main reason was because podcasts more and more yank the old episodes and put them behind a patreon. AudioBookShelf downloads the episodes to your server so you always have them. About 5 months after starting using it another one of my podcasts pulled that stunt and I was super happy to have all of the old episodes still.

I recently rebuilt my home server using containers instead of (qemu/KVM) VMs and I notice a performance benefit in some areas. Although I just use systemd-nspawn containers rather than docker as I don't really see the need to install 3rd party software for a feature already installed on my OS.

I handle snapshots by using btrfs. Works great

Sneaker culture is incredibly weird. Shoes made by children in China with a limited edition color are in such high demand that there are sites where people refresh F5 constantly hoping to have the honor to pay hundreds and hundreds for shoes that cost $7.50 to make. Then half of the time people won't even wear them outside, they'll put them in a bag and change shoes when they get to work or whatever. Or some might not even wear the shoes at all and just display them.

I'm an old soul in this sense. I love a quality goodyear welted shoe, and made in USA, UK, or Italy usually. An Allen Edmonds strandmok is a fantastic everyday shoe for me. I like to purchase nice things in general, use them, take care of them. I really hate throwaway culture as well.

Please nobody hate me for this, I'm a bit self conscious being an admin of my own instance and don't want to piss people off haha. If you're into gym shoe culture that's awesome. If I knew you in real life I'd probably make fun of you for a minute if I saw you walking outside in socks carrying your $400 limited edition sneakers, but then you can make fun of me for one of the thousands of things I do and it's all in good fun.

When deciding between the two I went with Netbird as it is fully self hostable and entirely opensourcen. Also, kernel wireguard support. There were a couple of bugs with some updates but I spoke with the devs over Matrix and got them all resolved. Works fantastic!

I haven't been able to subscribe to any community hosted by lemmy.ml for quite awhile. When I click subscribe it just says subscription pending. I figured it was because of their server load at first, but since it's still happening I'm not so sure. Anybody else having this issue?

Pan/pang- the g has a well established rule to change the pronunciation of the a? No it doesn't lol. Words are not comparable like that in english, this is another terrible argument.

Examples: lead and lead, read and read, tear and tear, bass and bass, wind and wind. Spelled the exact same way and different pronunciations. Trying to prove how gif is pronounced based on the word gift just proves you haven't thought about this for more than 10 seconds.

There is no grammatical argument for hard g. There is also no grammatical argument for soft g. Once again, g followed by i or e can be either in English. The only thing that should sway this is what the creator intended and straight up told everybody many times.

ZFS on file server, fully luks encrypted btrfs on desktop, and probably ext4 or whatever is default on the buntus for laptop and work desktop.

ZFS on freenas/truenas has been rock solid for 10+ year raid. I love working with btrfs snapshots and the ease of adding drives on demand to expand. I don't think much about ext4 on those systems.

There is an android app. I haven't needed to use it yet though, mobile isn't my particular use case for this. But it should work fine.

I'm not going to argue that xmpp shouldn't be the defacto Foss social/chat network based on merit, it definitely has merit. But in reality, it had its shot and it did not take off. Now, in 2023, Matrix is our best shot at an open, Foss, decentralized chat protocol taking off.

Any arguments that xmpp evangelists will try to come back at this statement with do not matter. I'm sorry, it is just a fact, the clock isn't turning back. Matrix may not be perfect for everybody, but it's pretty damn great, and it has the momentum right now. Let's please not screw this up with the typical fragmentation the open source community regularly has.

Matrix. Spin up a conduit server, doesn't tale very long and it works great. Clients arent perfect but the next gen clients are available in beta (element x) and will fix a lot of the issues current gen clients have

this one also makes me irritated in general when I see it happen and sometimes angry when I find out a special moment was only captured via vertical video. Cell phones are amazing portable devices, not the end means of consuming media.

in terms of how people refer to it these days, you may be correct that slightly more are using the hard g. what drives me nuts about the argument though is that the 'hard g' crowd does not have a good argument for it. the "g stands for graphics so it should be a hard g" crowd are immediately proven wrong that that's not how any acronyms work. the "gift" crowd are immediately proven wrong as i just did above.

Do you use Joplin? I've heard about it a ton but I can't figure out when I'd ever use it. I use Bookstack for a Wiki and then I have an empty (besides myself) Matrix room that I use for quick notes or something I need to send from my phone to a different device. And then I also have Nextcloud and could just use docs there. I love self hosting open source apps but I struggle to see how often I'd use Joplin (or any note app) over other options. I'm hoping you or somebody can finally make something click for me.

the ellipses at the end of this is throwing me off lol, like there's something you're implying. so what? what on earth is your point lol - so that's the solution? every monitor and tv should have the ability to rotate 90° to accommodate for the masses' laziness/ignorance/whatever the reason is? and people should get off of their couch and walk up to their TV and manually rotate it depending on the media they are viewing?

all of this that despite the fact that yes, the screen would now be the right orientation, but it still doesn't address the fact that portrait is just inherently the inferior choice for video (unless the video is of a single person standing upright and not moving i guess)

I love Nextcloud and host a server for personal and a server for work. I always update personal server first to test, upgrading to 27 now, we'll see how it goes.

I do wish the Nextcloud team would stop re-inventing the wheel a bit and utilize other open source projects. Why create their own chat platform and not just make it with Matrix? Why create their own video conference platform and not just use Jitsi?
