If I was/u/spez I'd be delighted by all this. People hate him but they still can't stay away no matter what shit he pulls.

The right move would have been to leave the canvas blank, but no way Redditors can pull this off.

Same! The mood here reminds me of the good old days when everyone on Reddit wasn't a cynical asshole.

Jerboa is already a better app than Reddit's official app, so I'm quite happy to give the Lemmy and Jerboa devs time to iron out the kinks.

“The election will decide whether your generation will inherit a fascist country or a free country, “ Mr Trump told the right-wing activist conference.

He's not wrong; he's just not on the side he thinks he is.

I have to believe this is just posturing for the people at home on the part of Zelenskyy. He has to know immediate membership of Ukraine into NATO means direct war with Russia leading to nuclear escalation, as Ukraine would immediately invoke Article 5.

Just saying "Ukraine will be invited to NATO once the conflict is over" is enough; it means whatever territory Russia gets to keep over the course of this conflict is it, because then Ukraine becomes NATO territory. It forces Russia to try and win it all (which they can't) because there won't be another invasion of Ukraine.

I'd be willing to pay for a few subscriptions if I didn't feel like subscription services are trying to gouge me left and right. I miss the days when subscriptions to Netflix and Spotify gave me access to 90% of content online.

Contrast this with Steam, which gives me centralized convenience, seamless updates, online sync, achievements... No wonder that's where I spend almost all of my entertainment money these days.

I hated the "coin culture" with a passion (hey, look, it's Bill Gates, let's give him tons of paid emoticons he won't care about!), but it's clear this move is part of Reddit's further enshittification. You can bet whatever replaces coins will be even shittier, and I think Reddit's users know it.

I treat them as sports team insofar as I hope that the stadium catches on fire and collapses on both of them in the middle of the match.

Yeah, that's some corporate dystopia shit right there...

I mean, it's a bold idea, but I don't find it so shocking.

It's well possible that what we call a "fundamental" constant is a variable that depends on other deeper variables. For instance, an earth-bound observer might consider acceleration in freefall to be a constant, but knowledge of universal gravitation tells us it's a variable that depends on the masses of the objects involved and distance between them.

It makes sense that other ostensible "fundamental constants" are also dependent on the structure of the universe at any given point in space and time, but the limited window of our observations makes them appear as constants.

It sounds like Erdogan is saying this is conditional on the EU reopening talks about Turkiye joining. Is that even happening?

I've been using it for a while. I stopped.

My two issues were security concerns because Beeper needs to unencrypt my data from all platforms to re-encrypt it to send it to me, which sounds like a huge single point of failure; and regular connection issues where I had to switch back to the original app.

Great concept, but not quite there yet.

Why is lemmy.ml still running, though?

It's only a war crime if it comes from the Moscow Oblast region of Russia. Otherwise it's an unfortunate but necessary defense strategy.

High-end human-powered spambots.

I think you're right. And I think NATO wants Russia to completely commit to a war they can't win until the government collapses and/or rethinks its global strategy.

What are your expectations here? Bombing Shanghai and toppling the world economy in retaliation for stealing unclassified emails?

For a second I thought there was a promoted post on Lemmy and I got equal parts angry and confused.

Oh, I see! I misread the article. Good news!

You set scrobbling on the server, so whatever you listen to through Plex will work regardless of the app.

I was in China last month where mask-wearing is frequent and not stigmatized. They had a surge of Covid cases, so I wore a mask on public transport. It's a total no-brainer there.

Back in Canada, I don't wear it as much because I'd be in much less trouble if I caught it here. Still wore one when visiting an aging relative in a medical facility.

That's literally YouTube Premium's value proposition.

Except we all know the U.S. is aggressively containing China. NATO getting into the China containment business sends a terrible message.

1 more...

The terrible message is precisely that NATO is only defensive in theory, but is willing to expand into the Pacific to defend a territory that is nowhere near its original purview.

The problem with the "purely defensive" argument is that historically, NATO Article 5 has been invoked to declare a war on a country that only indirectly threatened a NATO ally's regional stability. That's how NATO ended up bombing Serbia, which was doing despicable things to Albanians, but was not threatening NATO sovereignty to a degree that justifies Article 5.

Add these two together and China's opposition to a NATO presence in the Pacific makes a whole lot of sense.

Honestly, I'm just back to multiple apps. I work with people from all over, so I have like 7 different apps. Ah well.

I hate to be a pessimist, but it's not gonna work.

Most big subs will reopen, and those that don't will get their moderators replaced. The bulk of the user base is gonna switch to the official app and meme about how bad it is right on Reddit and get Reddit Gold for it.

I'm still gonna stick to either Lemmy or Kbin. I like the smaller community here; it reminds me of Reddit's olden days when everyone wasn't a cynical asshole.

AI datasets can be built by scrubbing web content and doesn't require API access.

This is about making sure Reddit controls the user experience and users can't, say, block their ads or hide Reddit awards. It's also a cold (and short-sighted) calculation: some people are making money from our product without sharing our costs, better kill them.

Yeah, I'm with you there. I paid twice and will gladly pay a third time.

My impression is that a large part of the user base knows about the controversy and likes to complain about it, but leaving is never, ever crossing their minds. The controversy is part of the flavor and texture of Reddit.

People always talk about sanctions, but unless you're sanctioning Cuba or North Korea, sanctions can be as damaging to the countries doing the sanctioning. Fully sanctioning China would essentially mean cutting ourselves off from the world's top manufacturer, which would hurt the U.S. way more than China now that their domestic economy is in full swing.

Not to mention that most if not will American-based multinationals would never go along with it.

I don't disagree; I was using g as an example of a variable that appears constant under a specific set of circumstances. Obviously the charge of an electron is much more consistent.

Don't think so. Ads are served by the same Reddit servers.

How does Fallen Order run on the Deck? It shows as not supported.

Last.fm is just a way to track what you listen to, and get recommendations off of it. The recommendations are actually pretty good, which is why I bother with it. You set it up on your Plex server, so it's pretty much fire and forget.

The hell does NATO need a presence in the Pacific for.
