That there is no perfect defense. There is no protection. Being alive means being exposed; it's the nature of life to be hazardous—it's the stuff of living.

Some context on what the fuck is rabbit and r1 would have been helpful.

Representatives for developers of the remaining three plugins couldn’t be reached because they provided no contact information on their sites.

You're asking for trouble if you're using such random plugins on production sites.

It all depends on what areas of technology interest you. Some context (e.g. in the body of the lemmy post) for more niche areas is always helpful.

Funnily enough, I was hearing this from developers in the early 2010s when I was just starting my career (IT adjacent, but not a developer).

Zoldyck is not lying.

Look up Assange and his connection with Israel Shamir, who helped Lukashenko's regime in Belarus target opposition activists.

This wasn't a mistake, he knew what he was doing.

People just buy into the PR around him (also spread by security services in russia and not only) without taking a critical look at his actions.

Do better!

They are correct in that encoding is a super geeky topic even by the standards of technology discussions.

It is fascinating to see how encoding has changed across generation. Take a relatively high bitrate source file and encode it with XviD, x265, x265 and whatever is the top AV1 codec at the same bitrate x resolution.

Not surprisingly, the biggest jump in quality will be from XviD to x264, but x265 does offer notable improvements.

I personally wouldn't expect massive innovation.

Smartphones have been around for ~20 years, it's a very mature product category.

"AI" tech does have potential in the smartphone space, but I thing the useful use cases are going to overshadowed by the hype.

Do you have any more info on this?

I use Mastadon pretty regularly and I feel like I somewhat know how it works, yet I read the Threads FAQ on federation and I have no clue what's going on.

But yes, the ability to subscribe to "mainstream" accounts in Threads from mastadon servers (if they allow federation with Meta) would be a good feature.

While a lot of the technical details are beyond my paygrade, this seems to be a potentially large game-changer in the medium term (with possibly a massive impact on Nvidia's share price).

The Wikipedia article is a good starting point if you wanted to actually get an alternative perspective.

But you don't.

Hahaha, that's a pretty wild read.

The fucking Gamaverse,

Pretty dystopian article.

But this will continue, until oligarchs like Altman, Cook, Nadella etc. start getting put into difficult situations; ones that create very strong incentives for them to show humanity (or at least emulate it).

That's wild! 692 "partners", I wonder if anyone even sees the irony of that message.

This honestly looks like a grift to get a nice salary for a few years on VC money. These are not random sales goons peddling shit they don't understand. They don't even bother to define "superintelligence", let alone what they mean by "safe superintelligence" .

I find it hard to believe this wasn't written with malicious intent. But maybe I am too cynical and they are so used to people kissing their asses, that they think their shit doesn't smell. But money definitely plays some role in this, they would be stupid to not cash in while the AI hype is hot.

Yeah, I was curious what new use cases were being deployed; was disappointed not read about this in the article.

I don't think it's supposed to have a cohesive narrative structure (at least in context of a structured, more formal critique). I read the whole thing and it's more like a longer shitpost with a lot of snark.

Only recently have they started leaving companies like OpenAI and taking a stance because they‘re actually seeing what their creation is used for and with how little care for human life it‘s been handled.

Is this true though? From my understanding, Altman was able to overrule the board largely because the employees (especially the one who had been with the company for more than 1-2 years) were worried about their stock options.

I wouldn't be surprised if the vast majority of the OpenAI team are ghouls just like Altman, that fundamentally lack humanity (incapable of honesty, inability to tell right from wrong, incapable of empathy).

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean this in the Hollywood sense, like the evil antagonists in say star wars, I am sure they come off as "normal" during a casual conversation. I am referring to going deeper and asking subtle questions referring to matters of ethics and self-enrichment in an off the record environment. They will always come up with some excuse to justify their greed as being "for the betterment of humanity" or some other comical word salad.

Crypto/blockchain is the kiss of the death for the legitimacy of any project.

You just know the whole thing will built around pump-and-dumps or quick rug pulls.

They will also assure you that Apple totally doesn't not collaborate with the CCP and allows them full access to all Chinese users data.

Apple users like to assure people of many things. :)

Fascinating, I am not surprised at all.

Even beyond AI, some of the implicit messaging has got to strike a nerve with that kind of crowd.

I don't think this is satire either, more like a playful rant (as opposed to a formal critique).

Yeah, this one is the bomb.

It's not that commonly used these days (especially online?), I think the phrasing is a bit old school, but it's a totally legitimate phrase.

Just noticed that the cropped image makes it look like he is doing a nazi salute and then the first sentence of their "manifesto" is "Superintelligence is within reach." :)

Not going to happen. Elmo is too self-centered to develop a phone in the spirit of FOSS. And then there are reputational issues to consider; many would be opposed to working for the benefit of Elmo.

It is an excellent concept. I wish there was a more common "killer service/use case", something like a imagehost but without all the bullshit and corporate changes (like the recent issues with imgur).

183,200 TV episodes is pretty modest compared to alternative "non-approved" sources.

One datapoint is one source (that has a rule against any TV/show content released in the last 5 years) has a total number of 19.5K shows and TV movies/specials, with ~80 K releases. For many shows a single release can be a full season.

Anyone have any experience with yggdrasil, particularly in context of remote access to self-hosted services?

I don't consider tech company boardroom drama to be an indicator of anything (in of itself). This is not some complex dilemma around morality and "doing the right thing".

Is my take on their PR copytext unreasonable? Is my interpretation purely a matter of subjectivity?

Why should I buy into this "AI god-mommy" and "skynet" stuff? Guy can't even provide a definition of “superintelligence”. Seems very suspicious for a "top mind in AI" (paraphrasing your description).

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying he acts like a movie antagonist IRL, but that doesn't mean we have any reason to trust his motives or ignore the long history of similar proclamations.

Lightning is a terrible protocol. The Lightning devs themselves state that it's basically unusable and you shouldn't even try sending transactions valued more than a few hundred dollars. If you're bored, check out the history of Lightning; it's almost like a satire of software development project.

You're also being a little disingenuous about the nature of Nostr and it's relatioship to crypto.

The "market cap" polemic is a piece of propaganda. If you tried selling all that bitcoin, the price would tank and you would see exponential declines in the "market cap".

What do you mean by anti-commercial style? I am not from North America, but this seems like pretty typical PR copytext for local tech companies. Lot's of pomp, banality, bombast and vague assertions of caring about the world. It almost reads like satire at this point, like they're trying to take the piss.

If his intentions are literal and clear, what does he mean by “superintelligence” (please be specific) and in what way is it safe?

I had a pretty decent self-hosted setup that was working locally. The whole project failed because I couldn't set up a reverse proxy with nginx.

I am no pro, very far from it, but I am also somewhat Ok with linux and technical research. I just couldn't get nginx and reverse proxies working and it wasn't clear where to ask for help.

Associating with crypto-fraud is a hard no for many users (I am referring to Nostro which was developed by a crypto-bro).

Had a very similar experience in pretty niche-use cases. LLMs are great if you understand the what you are dealing with, but they are no magical automation tool (at least in somewhat niche, semi-technical use cases where seemingly small errors can have serious consequences).

You don't see the problem with a payment system that is fundamentally unreliable?

Why would you pay your phone bills with lightning? I don't know which country you live in, but where I lived there are so many easier methods to pay your phone bills.

Thanks! Too bad it's not more activity.

Outside of job searching, I can't stand LinkedIn, the "content" and self-promotion you see there makes me want to become a committed misanthrope.

All the individuals you mentioned made their contributions and statements under their real names.

The Tor team largely publishes their work under their real names:

https://www.torproject.org/about/people/

They even have a board of directors:

https://blog.torproject.org/announcing-new-board-members/

Has the lead Nostro developer mentioned anything about his support for Olavo de Carvalho (the claim that "Pepsi-Cola was flavored with stem cells of aborted fetuses" is particularly wild)? I will note Stallman, Linus have provided feedback to public criticism of their statements/approaches.

The Lemmy tankie issue is definitely a major problem.

Why would I use a payment system that developers themselves call unreliable? Are you serious?

I am not even talking about overall usability (i.e. recipient support) and UX/UI...

Turns out Nostr's founder (who is a crypto-bro) is super sketchy:

Thank you for this! Nothing wrong with "tech demo" type initiatives, but they need to be clearly labelled as such.

What caught my attention was that this was likely a "centimeters sized lab based sample" and "they degrade in air"). These two factors make it seem like, while this is interesting tech achievement, it's not really viable for mainstream use anytime soon.

This confuses me… I thought that a project being attached to a crypto/Blockchain was a good thing? Because things you create on the Blockchain stay yours and are secure and the project can somehow self fund itself. All very confusing, but something like that. Are you saying that ALL Projects built on a Blockchain are suspicious? Very interesting

I do think blockchain/crypto is a massive red flag.

From a product perspective, the focus will always be on "pump and dump" not the actual product/service. See "web 3.0 gaming" for a perfect example.

Not sure what you mean about "staying yours" and "secure".
