At our GP surgery, there are a couple of doctors who won't consult on birth control matters for religious reasons.

There's just a sign at the reception saying that if you need to discuss birth control, please let the receptionist know and they'll be sure to assign a different doctor.

When juries deliberate, they discuss their reasons for thinking this or that. Basically, by telling the jury to disregard something, the judge is saying that this shouldn't be included in the decision-making process.

Of course people can't just take things out of their heads, and of course the legal representatives take advantage of that fact.

Lemmy was released as an open-source fediverse alternative to Reddit.

Just over a year after launch, r/ChapoTrapHouse, moved across after being banned from Reddit. This is likely what you're referring to. It had well over 100,000 active users on Reddit, so represented a sudden sizable influx of users.

I'd wager the biggest influx of people by far, though, occurred when Spez upset a majority of mods and many users by banning third party apps.

People looked for an alternative, and Lemmy was it.

But why are so many people who lean left politically? Because the Venn Diagram for "people who like the idea of a decentralised platform that supports everybody and is free from the machinations of millionaires", and "people who would like society that supports everybody and is free from the machinations of millionaires" is nearly a circle.

I think it depends on the convention used in each country, so there isn't one global correct answer.

In Britain the convention is Ground, 1st Floor, 2nd Floor.

'Enterstela' is an anagram of 'Arse Nettle', if that helps.

I know it doesn't help, but Europeans have always been amazed how much you guys were charged for SMS. Even in 1999, over here messages cost a fraction of what you were charged - that you pay for them at all these days is just mind-boggling.

But they're not taken from you - they still happened.

No actual harm has happened. Nothing changes the fact that you had a conversation. You are no poorer for it being hidden.

I know it's said a lot, but if you don't want to play by someone else's rules, you can set up your own instance. Every single thing on here is the result of someone just setting up their own instance. Honestly, it's never been easier than it is now.

This. It's less to do with religion, and everything to do with human nature.

From Ancient Egyptian Priests and Medieval Christianity, to Donald Trump and Boris Johnson - when in times of uncertainty, people will turn to anyone claiming to have all the answers.

"Us Vs Them" is the oldest tactic when it comes to gaining and consolidating power.

Is that actually true? I suspect not.

Most people start "enjoying their own company" years before getting to try for real.

If there was a question of insensitivity, then surely problems would be much more prevalent at ages when people are enjoying themselves more frequently. But it's not the case at all.

Had mine done through the NHS. Basically two questions, "do you have children already" and "how long since your last child was born?".

If you haven't had kids yet, you just need to explain why you want a vasectomy, usually with a specialist. If your last child was born less than two months ago, they want you to wait (apparently a lot of men's first reaction to the realities of having a baby is to try to ensure it won't happen again).

There's a couple of things to consider when thinking about this.

Firstly, dividing the total by the number of tax payers and concluding that everyone should pay £569 is misleading. Wealthy people pay far more tax than most people (still not enough IMHO!) and as such the per-person cost is wildly different for everyone too.

Secondly, consider your position - your chances of success, and the possible range of success, depends hugely on your parents' circumstances and those of other close people in your life.

So we have this clear chain of success breeding success - wealthy people can afford to give their children the kind of start in life that us poor spuds can only dream of.

A huge number of wealthy families used slavery to amass and increase their wealth massively. These families are still wealthy, still benefitting from the leg-up they were given on the backs of slaves.

These families are the ones who, ultimately through tax, would end up contributing the most. Us plebs would be paying relatively little.

Even if your family didn't own slaves, or exploit them directly, they'll almost certainly have benefited from their existence. I live in a mill town north of Manchester - the very reason for this town's existence is cotton, ultimately picked by slaves abroad. The money came from businesses and trade that relied on slavery.

This. There is evidence that a preacher called Jesus existed, was crucified, and was well-regarded enough to start a following that persisted even after his death.

There isn't, however, strong historical evidence for any of the magical parts of it.

It's not the boiling that's the important factor - it's the temperature.

You could make a cup of tea with it, but it wouldn't be much different than just plopping a teabag in room-temperature water for the same amount of time.

Also, at the time, in the west, Al Qaida were a largely unknown terrorist cell operating in far-away third-world countries. It seemed incredible that such a devastating attack could be carried out on US soil by a small group most people had never heard of.

You might be underestimating the timescales involved.

For example, grass - super simple organism, right? Should have appeared early on? No, dinosaurs appeared before grass did. But when the first grasses did evolve, wow, they were successful on a scale that is hard to overstate.

The beauty of sexual reproduction, from an evolutionary point of view, is that by its very nature, it allows many experiments to take place at once. The success criteria of each experiment is how many babies can the subject make.

Little wings evolve on seed pods for the same reason they evolved on anything else. For whatever reason, each step along the way made them a tiny bit more successful at having babies than those without.

Maybe a little spike makes them slightly less likely to be eaten, a bigger spike less likely still. A flatter spike helped them catch the wind and scatter further afield, and broader ones further still.

There's no feedback needed for individuals in this system - it's literally a numbers game based on who/what can make the most babies. They're the ones who, millions of years down the line, end up winning.

You've have some examples, but in case they are not clear enough:

If [you have AIDS] then [you are unwell]

[You are unwell] if and only if [you have AIDS]

The first one is not the same as the second. Why? There are plenty of ways to be unwell, without necessary developing AIDS.

The first statement only defines one possible path to B, not all of them.

Does "World's Richest Man" count as a leader? Because I'm struggling to think of any negatives to him being suddenly substracted from the world.

Also, TIL that substracted is a valid, albeit obsolete, variant of subtract.

Something to add to this.

The people protesting against racism are counter-protesters. They are showing up to protest against the far right who are in turn protesting against migrants.

In the past couple of days they have been out-numbering the far right protesters by at least an order of magnitude, and a lot of the expected riots have been averted.

Maybe I am being obtuse - but I really don't see what it is you think you've had taken from you.

The conversation, the exchange of information, is intangible and transient by its very nature. You don't own the conversation. There's nothing about it to own.

If you think there's some obligation on the part of the moderator to preserve the transcripts of conversations that you've taken part in, even against their own better judgement, then I'm sorry but I don't see it.

But anyway, like I said - if you set up your own instance, you can keep those threads open for as long as you like.

I'd imagine history has a huge amount to do with this.

In Britain, the age of consent is 16. The age at which you can get married is also 16.

It's also illegal to sell alcohol to children under 18 (unless alongside a meal, with an adult accompanying them, in which case 16). It's not actually illegal to drink alcohol underage, and it's not uncommon in the slightest for parents to allow their kids to try their drinks at any age.

Britain is an old place though, so I guess things are this way because of centuries, possibly millennia of inertia.

The US is a young country, and as a result the laws are far most maliable - particularly by lobbyists. Puritans push the age limit of 'sinful' things up, capitalists keep the age limit of indulgences low.

As @princessleiascat said, I think you're assuming that most people can relate to this, but the truth is that they can't. I've never had a comment deleted from YouTube - ever.

As a creator, I've deleted the occasional comment someone else has made on my content, though.

This is why most people are defaulting to the position that maybe it's more about what you are writing, rather than a broken system.

I started university in 1999. Pretty much everyone had a mobile phone there. They were fairly new, granted, but they were pretty ubiquitous.

I'm only going to tackle the tech side of this...

How difficult would it be for AI photo apps to filter out words, so someone cannot make anyone naked?

Easy. The most popular apps all filter for keywords, and I know that at least some then check the output against certain blacklisted criteria to make sure it hasn't let something slip through.

But...

Anyone can host their own version and disable these features, allowing them to generate whatever they want, in the exactly same way that anyone can write their own story containing whatever they want. All you need is the determination to do it, and some modicum of ability.

People have been been creating dodgy doctored photos long before computers. When Photoshop came out, it became easier, and with AI it's easier still. The current laws about creating and distributing indecent images still apply to these new images though.

I'm not trying to downplay the reality of serious health concerns sometimes being behind food habits, but I think I need to say...

Picky eating is an absolutely normal part of child development. Anecdotally, both of my kids went through two distinct phases of picky eating, at around 3-5 and 8-11.

They gradually grow out of it. All you can do is try to make sure what they are eating is nutritious enough while they are going through it.

if they don't have some already, 100% on the Brio train set - except not Brio. The generic wooden railway sets are just as good nowadays, and many many times cheaper.

You can buy a whole dinosaur themed wooden railway set on Amazon for £37. I'd want that, even as an adult!

FWIW, both of my kids played with their wooden railway for years - seriously good investment.

Materials.

If you'd have seen the marble sculptures when they were new, you would have described them as anything but realistic. We now know that many, if not most, sculptures were painted in bright garish colours.

Why paint a delicately crafted sculpture with a dodgy paint job? Party taste, perhaps, but more definitely because that was what was available.

The paints that we have now are carefully designed, mixed and stored to deliver a wide range of colours of a consistent quality (and even modern companies like GW struggle with that!).

The further back you go, the fewer pigments there are and the less sophisticated the binders are. It's no coincidence that the rapid explosion in science and trade of the Renaissance led to the rapid development of paints. Even in those days, an artist didn't buy paint, they made it - access to new raw ingredients was all that was needed.

So, why the Renaissance? Because it's the earliest point in time it could have been possible.

Seems that a lot of people have said something similar, but FWIW...

I've been able to move my left eyebrow by itself for as long as I can remember.

I taught myself to move the right eyebrow in 15 minutes standing in front of a mirror. This was about 20 years ago and I can still do it.

For anyone interested, as people have said, it's about isolating and learning the 'instruction' that does it. In this case, seeing as I could raise both eyebrows together, I just did that repeatedly whilst holding the left one in place with my fingers. Fifteen minutes later, and I could do it without needing the fingers.

The romans called the area Judaea....land of the Jews.

Just a quick correction here. Judaea is actually named after Judah, son of Jacob.

The word 'Jew' comes from the place name Judaea, not the other way around.

Yikes - and I thought I overanalyzed my text messages

Dry cereal always worked (still does!) as a nutritious snack. Granted, the nutrition has all been sprayed on, but it's still there.

A little mixed tub of Cornflakes/Branflakes/Rice Crispies/Coco Pops always goes down well.

Nerf Herder have a song called Courtney about Courtney Love.

I always wanted a Nokia - I know it was a cliche, but I was amazed at how indestructible they were. Even when they did actually break apart, you could just pick up the bits, clip them back together, and it would just work again - with no visible damage.

Also, SNAKE

That isn't how free speech works.

All it means is that the government can't stop you from saying what you want. It doesn't mean that you can say whatever you want with no repercussions.

YouTube is not the government. It has terms and conditions that you agree to when you sign up. They have a right to delete your comments. You do not have the right to post whatever you want.

Sorry, but that's the truth of it. If you circumvent the built in filters, then users can still downvote / report you and creators can still delete your messages.

I've literally just bought a Pixel 5 because it was the smallest high-spec phone I could afford.

Although this thread is a month too late for me, I'm glad to have found it - I honestly felt like I was the only person in the world who didn't want a big phone.

Brilliant answer,

I'll chip in, just due to how counter-intuitive it is, but trochee is not pronounced how it is spelled.

It's Tro-key (kind of like smokey)

"300 m/s ought to be enough for anybody"

NHS = National Health Service

It's what we have in the UK, and essentially means that all your health care is free.

Vasectomy = free. Having a baby in hospital = free. CAT scan = free. Insulin = free.

Admittedly, it's paid for in taxes, but at a small fraction of the cost of the American way of doing things.
