Almost everything looks dumb on tv if you know what to look for. Almost everything related to guns, computers, or driving looks ridiculous and fake. It doesn’t stop them from doing it, nor does it stop people from enjoying the entertainment.

I played a shit ton of WoW when I was younger. It stopped being fun a long time ago. Mostly it was only fun with friends.

D3 also sucks. Played a lot of that at launch, and also when the expansion came out (can’t remember the name). D2 was always way better, and now with D2R, I don’t think I’ll ever need to buy another game in my life.

I think that universities are perfect for hosting instances (of Mastodon too). It would be a great teaching opportunity, and the cost seems like it would be negligible.

When I was a kid, our internet connection was actually hosted through the local university. It makes sense for them to participate in distributed platforms like this.

I think it’s natural that there should be a small collection of large, production-class instances that host the vast majority of users. The important point is that there are more than a few, and certainly more than one.

I also think it is important for instance admins to lay out their plan for how they intend to host and fund an instance if they intend to be production-class.

We also need some kind of account backup and migration tool so that if an instance goes down, those users can easily recover on another instance.

I think it’s a fallacy of our time that we have to be connected to all and get all content. Does it matter that some people are in a different but similar community? Do they need to be bridged?

Maybe this is something that an app can do. Like multi-reddits, just present multiple communities in a consolidated stream.

The one thing I would worry about is that a massive deluge of content from Meta would drown out anything else from Lemmy, and would effectively reduce Lemmy to just a client for interacting with Meta. Unless an individual could block Meta specifically (or any one instance) it would effectively kill the All category.

Also would the flood of new traffic make it impossible for individuals to bear the cost of small instances?

That’s just what I think anyway. I’m not totally against federating with them, but very skeptical.

I agree. Ultimately, I think there is a real chance that there ends up being 2 major fediverses. One that is federated with Meta, and one that is not.

I think that those joined to meta will ultimately become like the losers table in a school cafeteria. They can hear all of the conversations, but nobody will engage them. I’d rather be in the not-federated camp.

Imagine if you told them then that this photo would one day “be on the fediverse”

I always found it hilarious and sad when people interacted with brands. “Someone you know liked Walmart”. Why?

How has he not been forced out of Tesla yet? Does he spend any time with them at all?

Lemmy has definitely been able to replace Reddit for me. And although I don’t fully understand the fediverse either, I am super intrigued by the concept. I hope this style is the future of social interaction on the internet.

A minute or two each day gos a long way.

I think it’s best to tend toward more permissive, so I vote for option 2.

One thing I would suggest is this that while “help me” posts might not be appropriate, “this is how I fixed it” posts can be cool. So if someone decides to write a post or link an article about “how I fixed my remote docker debugger”, I think that’s great. But not so much “please help me fix my remote docker debugger”.

Just my 2 cents.

Agreed. It sounds to me like lemm.ee is in good hands.

Fantastic!

Me neither!

Fun fact: one of them is named Spirit of Kitty Hawk, after the place where the Wright brothers flew.

I’m liking Memmy a lot so far.

Sometimes I like to pack the most functionality into a single, hard to read one-liner, just for fun. In review I’ll admit “it’s a little bit abstruse”.

I know what you mean. I have a 3 year old. I don’t really bother to pick up toys every day. Try to focus on just the space that you want clean for yourselves. For me, it was the kitchen counters and the living room where I like to relax. Also, having a bin in each room for toys helps a lot, just spend 2 minutes piling all the toys in the bin will go a long way to helping it look better.

Excellent!

Oh you’re allowed to. You just won’t like the consequences thereof.

Well, I just joined today, so only one. But since you can subscribe and post to communities on any other instance, I’m not sure why I would need to sign up on another unless I wanted to change. That’s what makes the fediverse amazing.

That’s a very good point.

I was just gonna say that. love the colors!

I agree with him that there is inevitably a strong tendency toward centralization, but I think a key feature to help with that would be the portability of one’s account to new instances. Even if the majority of users are in only a few instances, there is still a safeguard against one entity (I.e. corporation) directing the health of the whole system. If accounts were portable, when an instance went foul, people could move and the system as a whole would self-heal.

Nonetheless, it’s an interesting article. And the cost and challenges of running a web scale service are not conducive to small time players.

Cute ☺️

This dog is way cooler than I’ll ever be 🤣

In an SSO scenario, your home instance would still need to be around to act as the IDP. I don’t think that adds much in terms of functionality over what we have now.

The ability to backup and migrate your account is critical to prevent losing your data if an instance goes down. SSO wouldn’t help you in that scenario.

Cute!

Companies have been gorging themselves at the free buffet of open source software for a long time. But now the party is ending and many things that used to be free are no longer free for enterprise use.

Yep. I was on Reddit for 12+ years, and used Apollo for many years recently. I never used “new” Reddit or the official app. Quit and uninstalled Apollo a few days before the 1st.

Lemmy feels like home. And the fediverse concept is super interesting to me.

Wow, that’s really beautiful!

Maybe not something i wish I knew, but I wish I had a zeal for education when I was younger. It really took me until about my junior year in high school to really click. Only then did I actually appreciate studying. Before then, it was just an obligation. I still did fairly well, but I wish I had been more intentional about it.

Also, get involved in groups and don’t be so shy. Nobody cares about the small anxieties that you’re worried about. Just join groups and have fun. Still hard to apply this lesson even as an adult, but I try.

I have not looked into it or anything, but I think a tumblr alternative would do very well on the fediverse. I think it could even be better for self-hosting than Lemmy.

And that’s why corporate media will always suck.

Does this feature help our users? Yes, but does it make us more money? No. So we’re not doing it.

In 2005 I bought an inexpensive black-and-white HP laser jet for $99. To this day it still prints flawlessly after sitting idle for months or years. The toner never “dries out” or goes bad. Nor have I ever once needed to print in color. If I ever do, I’ll go to a print shop.

I think I’m on my 3rd toner cartridge since 2005. Highly recommend.

Is a “hobbiton” 2000?

The speed at which humanity refined flight after the Wright brothers is truly amazing.

I just can’t understand the rationale for all that. Was it all for cost cutting? You would think after 140 years they would be relatively stable.
