Reddit refugee (joined there in 2011, but was not part of Digg before that). IT leader in corp land, but lurker on the internet. I'll try to talk more on kbin than I did on reddit.

They are “inviting” mods to do even more free work in furtherance of Reddits profitability

OP delivers:

A top secret military acoustic detection system designed to spot enemy submarines first heard what the U.S. Navy suspected was the Titan submersible implosion hours after the submersible began its voyage, officials involved in the search said.
The Navy began listening for the Titan almost as soon as the sub lost communications, according to a U.S. defense official. Shortly after the submersible’s disappearance Sunday, the U.S. system detected what it suspected was the sound of an implosion near the debris site discovered Thursday and reported its findings to the Coast Guard commander on site, U.S. defense officials said.
While the Navy couldn’t say definitively the sound came from the Titan, the discovery played a role in narrowing the scope of the search for the vessel before its debris was discovered Thursday, the officials said.
“The U.S. Navy conducted an analysis of acoustic data and detected an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of where the Titan submersible was operating when communications were lost,” a senior U.S. Navy official told The Wall Street Journal in a statement. “While not definitive, this information was immediately shared with the Incident Commander to assist with the ongoing search and rescue mission.”
Officials decided “to continue our mission as a search and rescue and make every effort to save the lives on board,” the U.S. Navy statement said.
The Navy asked that the specific system used not be named, citing national security concerns. It is normally used to detect enemy submarines.
The U.S. Navy typically deals with foreign threats using military capabilities. The U.S. Coast Guard typically carries out search-and-rescue operations and handles other matters directly related to security of the country. The two services often operate together due to their mutual maritime missions. The search for the Titan was conducted roughly 900 miles off the coast of Massachusetts.
Searchers found debris from the submersible roughly 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic wreckage, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Canadian, U.S. and French ships were part of the search.
The Coast Guard didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment about what information it received and how it was used.
Throughout the search, rescue crews detected several types of noises, U.S. and Canadian officials said, including the one suspected of being the sub’s implosion. An underwater implosion is the sudden collapse of a submarine when the tremendous pressure of the seawater overpowers the pressure inside the vessel and crushes it.
Officials leading the search also said they heard sounds similar to knocking from the vessel, but said they couldn’t conclude the noises came from the Titan.
It was unclear what other factors narrowed the search area, which eventually grew to twice the size of Connecticut. But a U.S. defense official said “the analysis of the acoustic data was a significant factor in scoping the search area, and thereby enabling the assets on scene to locate the degree of the debris field.”
The U.S. is expected to conduct an investigation to try to determine whether the sound definitely came from the Titan, but what government entity would carry out the probe—and any time frame for completing it—remains unclear, a U.S. defense official said.
The U.S. developed its acoustic systems after World War II to detect enemy submarines operating in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
The Navy said it shared its findings Sunday with the Coast Guard, which led the search, U.S. defense officials said. The U.S. held off making public what noises it had detected because it wanted to ensure search-and-rescue operations continued and couldn’t say for sure it was an implosion.
“It looks that the Titan imploded on Sunday on its way down to the Titanic shortly after contact was lost at a depth of around 9,000 feet,” a person with direct knowledge of the matter said.
The five men onboard the missing submersible in the North Atlantic are believed to be dead, the U.S. Coast Guard and the company that operated the vessel said Thursday.
The sub’s disappearance had set off an urgent international search effort to find its occupants alive.
The families were informed Thursday of the Navy’s findings when the search-and-rescue team discovered the debris field, according to a U.S. defense official.
The submersible had departed Sunday for what was supposed to be an hourslong excursion to the Titanic shipwreck, more than 2 miles below the ocean’s surface. Shortly after the voyage began, the sub lost contact with the outside world.

I’ve registered on and experimented with a handful of fediverse instances, apps, etc this week and really keep coming back to Kbin.social as my main point of entry. With the progressive web app on my phone and iPad I’m having a similar experience to Apollo, and really liking watching this community (and Lemmy) grow. Glad to be here with you all, let’s keep this excitement going!

Moving to the new, better online community and leaving Reddit to become what it becomes now is winning, in my opinion.

Maybe I'm a pessimist but this is going to really resonate with the people who are "looking forward to AI" because they read headlines, but haven't actually used any LLMs yet because nobody has told them how.

There is something going on though, as posts show more comments than I’m seeing loading in Apollo, and also new posts/threads are locked for comments. Dissenting mods in the team who have yet to be removed?

Too much focus on Reddit drama threads and not enough on actual content (I am guilty of this too). I think as the drama passes it will liven up in the popular topics/magazines. Reddit needs to stop pulling the trigger on their foot gun first.

This is great insight!

This is great! I found this sorting by New and these tips are applicable for anyone (not only those suffering from ADHD) to have a more authoritative and confident tone to your digital communications.

Super interested in this topic. My three kids are growing up way more shielded from the world than I did. I can’t tell if that will be a good thing for them or a bad thing. My wife grew up very protected. I feel like I understood reality by teen years while she is often surprised (in our 30’s) to learn just how bad and hopefulness things often are. I share realistic perspectives on things with my girls but usually with a spin towards “the future generations will figure out a solution”.

Several of the big subs have switched to a malicious compliance though where they’ve reopened but are nothing like their normal content. It’s not actually against the rules, and seems kind of clever unless I’m missing something?

“I think the fun part of reddit is over.” Upvoted until I saw this, and had to comment to say you are absolutely right. Reddit will live on for now but the fun times feel over.

"i can't wait for grassroots decentralization of the internet, including video" 🍻

Very disappointed to see my employer on here with a D rating. Internal comms said we were out!

The difference now is that Gab exists and those people have been going over there for a few years now. As long as the fediverse doesn’t become an echo chamber like Reddit I’ll stay happy.

Source article is also paywalled. It's Wall Street Journal.

$24.99/month for 300 mbps up and down, Verizon Fiber. Northeast US.

I've enjoyed my time on the fediverse but have been disappointed with the leveling off of growth and lack of participation in niche communities. I still visit Kbin several times weekly, but it isn't like the old days when I would spend tons of time on Reddit. I have left my old Reddit account redacted and haven't started using it again, as that time is over. There are some communities and niche interests that unfortunately, it looks like Reddit will always be the main home for since we didn't hit the critical mass for people to move those communities over here. Because of that, I've started a new reddit account (with my real name attached, and started actively participating in those communities). For me, Reddit is no longer a place to anonymously participate in community discussions (because those discussions were becoming increasingly worthless alot of the time), but a place to participate with my IRL identity in communities related to topics or hobbies I care about. The anonymous community stuff is fulfilled by Kbin/Fediverse which I prefer now.

Literally if I have an article/photo/video etc to share or just a thought? I’ve only made posts so far, though, no links.

🤣💀

Probably my favorite and most played Mario game of all time. Now I see why they never released it on Virtual Console… this is even better. Can’t wait to play it with my daughters who love the Mario franchise!

Favorite thing I’ve read all day aside from Father’s Day cards from my daughters.

As humans we are biased towards action and forward thinking. From the perspective of where you are heading after completing the turn, it was a U shaped turn

This is wholesome

It’s worth. Will do that going forward. I’ve seen this before but forgot to do it for this post :(

The Beta Band, Vulfpeck, Khruangbin, Holy Hive, Tame Impala, Hippo Campus, STRFKR, Greta Van Fleet

Spent a decade on Reddit (using Alien Blue, then Apollo exclusively) but now spending 90% of that time on kbin/fediverse leaning heavily on kbin progressive web app on iPad/iPhone. Doing most what I need it to like Apollo did, and even though it’s an early prototype it’s already way better than the official Reddit iOS app!

This is great thanks for sharing!

I consider myself so lucky to have been 10 and had this game when it was brand new. It was perfect.

I assume the $$$$'s caused some amnesia and a change of heart for spez. It really is sad to see this message and think about how exciting Reddit was back in the old days. But on the flip side I definitely feel like kbin/fediverse/lemmy is capturing some of that spirit.

'A man has his day in war as in other things; I myself shall be good for it another six years, after which even I shall have to stop. '
-Napoleon said this in 1805; in 1812 he invaded Russia, seven years after the quote.

@Curtains it definitely wasn’t easy to do. Agree kind of sad, but ousting mods was another red line I felt the crossing of warranted a response. I hope more people keep this up, but also when they are done, fill the hole in their entertainment, education/educating etc time on the Fediverse with us.

Cheers, 🍻

Oh man that’s terrible all around. Sorry to hear/read you are going through that Izzgo! A friend of mine had some kind of nerve searing procedure that helped with that kind of pain, any options in that space?

App Store metrics show us installs and uninstalls.

Good point, though I would counter that there's a lot of blustering about taking our country back but I haven't seen many serious attempts or people capable of actually planning and executing such a thing, and I've had a good bit of contact with what y'all would consider to be American far right rebels.

For all I know, the far righties talking about their revolution is about as productive as the tankies talking about theirs. Nobody sees a future in this country where the workers seize the means of production and we actually eat the rich, right?
