I think that's actually closer to the mark than many realize. Awards are great when they are not directed at the company or it's rep in a negative manner as they show positive engagement and help the company with sales marketing. When awards and upvote/downvote counters are used to highlight that the users are having a negative experience then it hurts the platform image. Similarly to how YouTube removed the downvote tracker because their marketing team realized it hurt their sales revenue with business partners.

I visit it for a couple of subs that are not active on here. For the most part it feels the same. I never really cared for the karma system, gold, etc. So switching to Lemmy for me was more about just trying to find a place not being bombarded by ads, bots, and corporate policies.

I think reddit will survive the Exodus of users simply because Twitter is so badly managed that reddit may actually supplant it for a while. However, the drive to monetize all aspects of our lives is actually getting some push back from users so Lemmy may continue to grow in the next few years.

The biggest issues facing Lemmy isn't content though. It's ease of adoption.

I have lived in the desert my whole life. So I guess I'm an expert now. I can tell you that it's hot as fuck and it can still kill me. No amount of planned "exposure" is going to prevent dehydration or heat exhaustion.

The issue is largely that these idiots are a mob and the casual US citizen keeps saying "It's all talk, nothing bad is going to happen, etc." When in reality this is exactly how fascism and nationalism began it's rise to power in Germany, Italy, etc. In the past the Constitution and legal system shutdown these agendas in the US. However, in the last 20-30 years the Republicans have done a lot to weaken and undermine the legal system and set in motion incremental phases that have slowly made this more acceptable to the average person.

In short money in politics through lobbying has allowed a lot of greasing of the wheels to undermine our govt and the average person doesn't want to be jobless/homeless so they say "not my problem" until it is too late.

I bet this has to do with complying with court orders. Can't turn over something you don't have.

Yep. Went to Disneyland a year ago and the trip there was very affordable. The trip home was 3-4x higher since it was closing time.

Honestly I don't mind the upvote and downvote system but i don't want reddit replicated.

Came to say the same. Why are you driving users to their platform at all?

I experimented by asking it to write a SQL query for a platform that has its entire database map available online. The data I asked for was impossible to get without exporting some of the data in those tables into temp tables using sub queries and then running comparative omissions analysis.

Instead of doing that it just made up fake tables and wrote a query that proclaimed the data was in these fake tables.

Well Bears are fucking massive so if they slapped you without claws they still have the ability to break bones and cause other severe injury.

Elite: Dangerous.

Hell of a good space trucker sim. If you like spending 2 hours managing your ship before making a 6 system jump only to dock and do it all over again.

Those are super easy to fix. Even the Google eraser could fix those easily.

I have 4 vehicles you know what all of them have in common regardless of the year? Apple Carplay/Android Auto and backup cameras.

If any manufacturer believes their shit maps and apps are better than Android or Apple they can fuck right off. I will hack or replace every system in my cars.

I am the lead on a team of 5 and technically we have an on call rotation but it is rarely used. In the last 3 years I have been called after hours a total of 4 times and TBH it was usually due to an AWS outage which resulted in us saying well let's see how long it takes for them to o restore services and then someone run a safety check to make sure shit is normal.

For that I make $120k, have unlimited PTO, and work from home.

Simply based off of his track history of not paying his debts I wouldn't take on a single contract or loan with this person. We have a local business owner who doesn't pay his contractors. It's well known locally so he always has to hire out of county to get work done because everyone knows he will screw you over. Trump is no different.

When I worked as a IT Tech at a University years ago we had a lot of MacOS users who believed they could just pick it up and use it like their iPhone. It was absurd how well their marketing worked because those users either forced themselves to learn it or dropped it and went back to Windows.

I know a lot of iOS users who have iPads and iPhones but still have windows PCs because they don't have to worry about compatibility issues.

Try Secret of Evermore. The combat is very different but the game allows for two players! One controls the main character and the other can control his pet dog. It's one of the rare action RPGs of the time.

I wish Wild Arms had an official mobile port. Such a great series with no modern IP usage to take advantage of its cult status.

FF6 is such a great game. I saved up and bought both of these games as a kid, lots of late nights irrigating fields and killing rattlesnakes to get those titles. Both titles were great in their own way and I can't imagine my childhood without them. Another great game was Secret of Evermore.

I think in the early days volunteer moderators were necessary because you wouldn't want a paid employee dictating the content and direction of a community sub that was created by users. That's what made reddit special back then. Now that it has a high user volume it's taken on a life of its own and the company feels they can move forward without those volunteers. I think it's a mistake but time will tell.

He's a callous shitbag is why. That's the correct answer. It has nothing to do with some deep thought on how the US exploits people, etc. It's a response he gave because he doesn't respect people regardless of whether they are dead or alive. The only people he respects are those in power.

Agreed. SoM was also a classic. I just enjoyed the aesthetic of Evermore and it had a cool dog companion.

I saw the impact of them siloing their user base yesterday when a trade was made for one of my sports teams. The news broke on Twitter and I heard about it on a local radio show. I tried to find it in the news but I couldn't. I don't use Twitter so I wasn't able to see any info on the trade for another 2 hours until local news and other services started to confirm and replicate the Twitter post.

It's incredibly short sighted of them to do this.

Agreed. I got it on Android during Covid and couldn't put it down. The game has held up well. I was in a retro jrpg kick for a bit and also picked up Dragon Quest V and felt that DQV didn't age well.

You mean fuel scoop. Nothing worse than making jumps with a full tank only to get to your destination and realize you forgot to equip a fuel scoop. Better hope they have a fuel scoop you can afford that also doesn't take forever to refuel!

I'm not saying I want or support that. I actually found it very easy to adopt. I am saying it is a hurdle in regards to adoption in regards to platform growth which is often discussed when comparing it to other social platforms.

It does when your employees are also some of the end users.

Saw the post about Apollo going offline and someone added the info for wefwef. Preregistered for Boost but so far wefwef is working great.

Edit: meant to write Boost not Apollo.

The official mobile port is well done. I know it wasn't always the case but after some past updates I haven't had any issues with it. I picked it up on Google Play and it was worth the $8 I paid.

Sorry. I should clarify. I was reading a thread about Apollo going offline and Boost as an alternative so a preregisterd for Boost. I wouldn't turn down an official Apollo app for Lemmy though.

I know 2 people who wrote COBOL code for some major healthcare systems a long time ago and they came out of retirement about 5 years ago to update/convert that code. They made six figure salaries working from home to update that code.

My son plays this game. I always hear him getting pissed about something LoL

I have owned temtem for a few years and I haven't spent a dime beyond the initial purchase. I enjoy the more modern Pokemon type experience but I haven't played in about a year due to work and other interests. I had no idea ait had become so transaction focused.

A friend of mine had the Turbo Grfx-16 and I was extremely envious. At the time it was probably the only one in our tiny town and I would go over to his house and play it. Years later he was extremely jealous when I snatched up a Neo Geo Pocket. Everyone was playing Gameboy but Neo Geo Pocket had some amazing games but no marketing. Luckily I managed to snag a bunch of game sfor cheap at a used game store so I ended up playing it well into 2010 when it was finally destroyed by accident.

Dragon Quest V is considered one of the great older jrpgs. It looks great on mobile and plays fantastic but the storyline is severely lacking.

Years ago I started on WoT and went to WoWS and was immediately hooked. Loved it at first but they really do not give a shit about their player base. I haven't logged on to either in about 3 years.

I was really hooked onto Marvel Snap for the first 4 seasons I played (6-7 total now). The game can be a lot of fun. I haven't made infinite the last 2 seasons and I stopped paying for premium after my 3rd season. I don't regret doing that since the game has become more transaction focused and I feel it's quick turn around makes it more enjoyable than MtG. That said I wouldn't recommend someone to pickup the game if they are serious about competitive card players.

Wild Arms was such a great game. It just had the worst timing ever for being released. I wish they would port it to mobile.

Came to say this. I enjoy hunting and outdoor activities so I have a multitude of gear. What I use depends on where I am going, who is going with me, and what activities we plan on doing. Such as:

  1. 30ft Toy Hauler Camper

  2. UTV and flatbed trailer

  3. Truck bed Tent

  4. Tents of various sizes and various types of climates

  5. Sleeping bags for various climates

  6. Hiking/Hunting clothes and shoes for various climates

  7. Binos and Spotting scopes of various styles

  8. Backpacks... So many backpacks

  9. Rifles of various calibers for hunting different game and environments and various fishing poles

  10. Lifejackets, paddle boards, and kayaks
