Several of us have noticed this since the protests and mass exodus started. It did seem that editing then deleting might protect against Reddit's restoration of posts and comments.

Update: Just checked. They've restored a lot of my old posts. This may turn into a years-long game of whack-a-mole trying to actually get our material deleted from that site.

No, no, no, no. This is right up there with my state wanting to let 18-year-olds carry concealed deadly weapons in classrooms with no permit. A deal breaker for my continued participation in this society.

Abuse. Disrespect. Lying. RTO mandate.

It’s a Chromebook. It certainly can’t operate any worse just because they washed it. ;)

This is one reason the tech journalists and other “influencers” whining about the fediverse only gets an eye roll from me. We’re not building this for them. Frankly, if their only goal is an audience for their content, I don’t even want them here.

They did for a while in the 70s and 80s. They were usually disguised as football team gear or running tops, but guys had half-shirts for several years.

Unfortunately, the 90s and 00s were relatively more conservative, and they disappeared. Maybe it’s time to bring them back.

Well done. I hope more of the fediverse follows suit. Facebook has a long way to go to restore trust -- if that's possible at all. They're nowhere near that threshold yet.

I think we may already be at the next oasis. It’s just the normal progression. People said similar things about AOL, MySpace, Friendster, LiveJournal, Delphi, CompuServe, etc. We’ll find new places to hang out. And then we’ll move on when they inevitably collapse.

Why can't the UK govt simply rent their spyware from Israel, like everyone else?

One wonders how much spez paid for that hack.

No kidding. I remain astounded that SpaceX got permission to launch the things in the first place.

Let’s see: Alienate the users. Fire everyone who knows how to keep the place running. Fill the site with bots and white supremacists.

FA complete. FO now underway.

I’m confused. Is this an actual proposal by Google? It is it personal musings of an engineer who may work for them? Have they tasked an engineer with floating a trial balloon?

Yet another case study in how to kill a successful business.

Interesting hypothesis -- and totally outside my wheelhouse. I wonder how "tired light" sheds energy without violating the law of conservation of energy. Are they suggesting that our universe is not an isolated and closed system?

I had heard, of course, that Rochko was in confidential talks with Facebook abiut something. This is disheartening. Facebook is toxic and must be kept out of the Fediverse.

Instances are like smaller Reddits. Communities (lemmy) and magazines (kbin) are like subs. You can subscribe and participate in any c/ or m/ as long as their instance is federated with yours.

To add to the fun, we can also interact with users on Mastodon (similar to Twitter), Pixelfed (like Instagram), or any other ActivityPub-enabled instance that federated with us.

To my mind, a better analogy is email. It doesn’t matter which platform (provider) you use, you can interact with anyone on almost any other email platform. Make sense?

Basically, it’s exactly as you say with the added bonus that this “twitter” and “reddit” can talk to each other.

True. Sadly, many don’t get that time after they’ve done hours of homework and mandatory extracurriculars every day and twice on Saturday.

Edit: typo

LOL! Guilty as charged. But I’m better now. I read on my phone under the covers, no flashlight needed. :)

Agreed, and it'll calm down in the next few days. People always need to talk about a breakup in order to process it.

It is. While the guillotine may have been spontaneous (and perhaps caught them off-guard), they had to know that “Fuck Spez” would figure prominently in this canvas. I suspect they’re hoping that people will get it off their chest and get back to making content for them to sell.

They can’t grant SWIFT access. And the governments who can are not inclined to do much that the UN asks.

After seeing this post, I just had to go take a look. Now I need a shower.

It's really depressing over there.

Why link to Reddit? Just give credit to the original source and be done.

As users, we have every right to express an opinion and to ask the admin to consider taking an action. As you say, if you don't like it, join another instance.

How many breeds does the UK propose to ban?

Why are you here?

“Trash” seems a little strong in the current media landscape. And it’s hardly their fault that the Magliozzis wanted to retire.

It'll be interesting when some untouchable actor decides enough is enough and starts deorbiting them.

Let’s not conflate anti-Israeli-government with antisemitism. That’s a tired old tactic that’s run its course.

I frankly prefer options 4-5. There’s no evidence that Facebook will play nice and a lot of historical evidence that they won’t. I want to be on an instance willing to take the nuclear option if it comes to it.

Nope. I have a barely-used Instagram account from before the sale to Facebook. I keep it in hopes that, someday, a regulator will force them to sell IG or spin it off. I have zero interest in having anything else to do with Facebook or any of its subsidiaries.

Is anyone maintaining a list of instances that have defederated Threads? I want nothing to do with them and am completely willing to hop to a different home if necessary to be sure of blocking them.

Have you looked at NextCloud? I have an instance running on an RPi that fits my needs (storage without sharing outside the home firewall). For anything that needs sharing, I just copy those images to an old Dropbox that I've kept and share from there.

This isn’t my experience.

Noted and my apologies. It seemed relevant in that Lemmy, and lemmy.world in particular, will be impacted by his decisions. I’ll take any future conversations to those communities.

Dropping Reddit was the only change? This is insane.

I’ve participated in their SETI and cancer research projects in the past. It’s a good cause, and I don’t mind making a donation.

I did think the BOINC project was shut down, though. Good to know it’s still going.

I admit that "Guilty until proven innocent" doesn't typically sit well with me. However, this is Facebook. We have 20 years of history to judge. At this point, only a willfully naive fool would trust them not to destroy anything they can't take control of and profit from.
