I think I understand your point, but if news isn't for profit, who would pay the reporters? I used to write for a newspaper and it's pretty hard work.

It can't be state sponsored, due to the conflict of interest. If the state pays for the media you couldn't trust the media to accurately report on the state.

Honestly, in good faith, wondering what the other options would be.

How are there enough Americans supporting these facists that they feel comfortable saying shit like this?

I don't think I want to live here anymore.

Then maybe get a better candidate? I'm pretty sure most sane Americans will vote for anyone not Trump. It's not that hard, just use another candidate.....

A bunch of ai garbage and also some ads please! Maybe collect info about me and sell it to marketing corporations while you're there.

I will never understand why people dont just use firefox and its derrivatives...

Don't ask that question, it's anti-Semitic.

This is probably one of the most important (legally and politically speaking) events to happen in the U.S. this year, but I feel like it will not get very much attention at all and might set a very dangerous precedent going into the next decade.

Microsoft Windows. I used to be a sysadmin. New job is 100% Linux. Now I never touch Windows unless it's to play a game.

I'm sorry, but that is just ridiculous. I might even say impossible. There's some kind of distortion of the numbers here.

I don't have anything to add here; I'm an engineer, not an artist. But I just want to say this is one of the best questions and resulting conversation I have seen on Lemmy so far. Definitely not a stupid question, Ziggurat!

100% if that country is in northern Europe. Hard nope if it's in South America.

I'd buy a ticket tomorrow if there was a job for me in a Scandinavian country and I didn't need to speak the language immediately.

We keep holding these debates, but it seems all of our uneducated brainwashed constituents keep wanting to vote for some asshole who thinks he's too important to show up to them. So we quit. Thoughts and prayers.

It has ads.... Why are people so excited about this? Jerboa is open source with no ads and works perfectly.

But then they would have to report on the systems funding them. That's a bit too easy for corruption to take place in my opinion.

Stop giving this asshole headlines, please.

But with Musk's wealth compared to the average white collar workers wealth, isn't that like 35 bucks?

My God this is the most relevant meme I've ever seen

I don't disagree with the sentiment here, the world is fucked and unchecked crony capitalism is the problem. The rich get richer and the rest of us barely get by. Also fuck Huffman for ruining the only social media platform I'd used consistently for over a decade.

That said, Huffman's salary is not even close to the number reported here. He makes something like $350k in a year (still a wildly high salary, no one person needs to make that much in a single year!), this "compensation" is closely tied to his equity in Reddit and it's predicted value when the company goes public.

Most CEOs are compensated in this way and I think it's not exactly a bad way to do it (partially for employees but mostly for investors). This value is tied to performance, so if the CEO does stupid shit and ruins the company, it directly affects his compensation. This can be a good thing if that CEO makes good business decisions, which can lead to more jobs and more stability for the workers. I realize this is not always the case, but that's the general idea.

It still sucks, and I still think no individual should make more money than is needed to live comfortably, but it's not like he's raking in 193 million every year like it seems from this tweet.

Jerboa is open source and has been working perfectly fine for me.

Just saw this morning that the police are saying the death was not caused by injuries from the fight.

Dude needs to promise to legalize weed at the federal level to make up for his past bullshit. That would probably get folks out to vote. Imma vote for the old geezer anyway because I don't want to live though Trump being president again. If Trump gets office again, he'll likely never leave.

A downvote for me is: this is content i don't want in my feed

JFC I used to be a libertarian and I still agree with some of their values, but over the last 20 years they've really just become a joke. Not as much as the GOP, who intentionally associate with Cruz and MTG, but this is getting there.

It's like someone said "it can't be worse than Ted Cruz and Margie..." And the libertarian is all "hold my beer."

If you're doing it right, containers are less like VMs and more like cgroups. If orchestrated correctly it uses less system resources to run lots of services on a single system/node.

That said, I'm a devops/infrastructure/network professional and not a developer, so maybe I'm missing something from the dev experience.... But I love containers.

Docker does kinda suck now, though. Use podman or another interface instead if you can help it.

Is this moron capable of thinking further than 15 minutes into the future? Did he think people would forget about this magical report that would exonerate him?

Use a different instance. That one is overloaded. Honestly I think they should close sign ups for a while.

Lenovo X1 carbon is what you are looking for. I got one (10th Gen) and slapped fedora on it and it's been absolutely awesome.

Battery life could be better, but I haven't tweaked it.

Good luck finding a quality new laptop with Linux support that also has a rj45 port. Framework might be an option though. But I just use a gigabit Ethernet usb3 adapter and it works fine

There are huge archives of flash animations and you can install a safe "emulator" for playing flash that even runs in your browser. Look up Ruffle. I can't remember the name of the big archive site I used, but it didn't take much googling. I know I was able to find Homestar, Larry Carlson, Adam Phillips (bitey), joe cartoon and salad fingers as well as a ton of games from back in the day.

Paying taxes? Most of that goes to military spending in the US

I have one word for you, OP: Racism.

The marijuana tax stamp law was put in place because American politicians and voters didn't like black and Mexican people. At the time, it was primarily used by those demographics. Now, of course, it's used pretty equally by everyone.

I'm pretty sure the major things that need to change are in the brain. Predeliction for violence and hate, addiction to controversy and toxins, and whatever makes people stupid enough to support facists.

It's because of what you said: no motive. Crime like this is only sensational when the motive can be applied to some fictional stereotype of villain that could be stopped by new legislation or a war or whatever.

Also I think a big reason we don't discuss this specific event is the caliber of rifle used. Contrary to popular belief, non "assault" weapons can do a shocking amount of damage in an environment where the targets can't retaliate. See the Virginia Tech shooting.

Long story short: if it ain't political and can't be made political, people in the US won't care for long.

Yeah it sucks the family ignored the quarantine orders, I agree. Maybe they should be held liable for that.

What concerns me more, and what we should be talking about, is that the kid shows up at the hospital and two other patients contact the disease. At the hospital.

Being at a hospital should not be a threat to ones health. This along with other hospital borne illness and the insane amount of preventable deaths from medical negligence should concern all of us.

It's not just right wing media, all media does this because it drives profits.

Fuck Fox News though, they are terrible for a multitude of reasons.

This is simply wrong. Many of the worst mass shootings in the last decade were committed with low power rifles and handguns. I'm actually pretty sure the two worst mass shootings (by count of those who were killed) in the US were done using .22 ammunition. Those weapons were not covered by whatever ban you're talking about

It's not about "assault weapons" and it's not even about guns. It's about the inability of our government to pass meaningful legislation around gun ownership and mental health and especially where those two topics intersect

The problem is that human suffering is normalized because the wealthy political class and those who fund them are not going to let things change for the better if it means less money for them.

I have a legitimate question: why is this public information? Like.... I'm not taking sides either way, I just don't understand the reason that the current location of someone's private property (her jet) is considered public info. They location of someone's car or boat isn't publicly available.... So why a plane?

I understand that flight controllers need access to this info for logistics, but that's not really public. They also need access to air waves for communication and those are heavily regulated.

Nope, not at all. I know several former hippies (parents of friends and family) who are very GOP.

My dad (big hippie, but barely a boomer) actually voted for Trump in 1, but now really regrets it and gets stoked about every court case against him

Useable transit

Wait.... You're telling me that they continue to do crimes with guns even when the guns are illegal? Criminals? Really? I refuse to believe it.
