This isn't a fix. Excel wasn't meant for this. While I do understand it's convenient as a database, unless you're doing something unimportant and small you just really should use something proper. And even now that this "problem" is gone, I am certain there are still more things that cause trouble. You can not satisfy everyone and Excel was just... not made for gene info storage.

Even if you don't want to use stuff that isn't Microsoft Office, that comes with Microsoft Access, which is a proper database management system. It's literally in the same software package, so why do people refuse to use it?

While I personally deem Windows to be worth not much more than the sum of its software and hardware support, that is certainly an important factor for many. I would encourage many people to at least attempt to use Linux, as Microsoft's monopoly on non-apple pcs is rather worrying, and they may even prefer Linux completely disregarding that factor, as I did, but you have clearly tried and figured out it doesn't work for you. Depending on the distro Linux can satisfy developers, average computer users, at this point even many gamers, but creative support is clearly lacking and if you need it then that's the final word on that.

While I encourage you to take another look in half a decade, or maybe a full one, please remember that people here on Lemmy are rather... preachy about Linux. So you're gonna get backlash for that decision, no matter how much sense it makes. Please do not let that behavior taint your view of Linux as a whole <3

Or in other words: Every OS has its advantages, I'm happy you found the right one for you at the moment, do give Linux another shot eventually, but for now just ignore the people telling you you're wrong or that there's some kind of easy fix for your multitude of issues and don't let that annoy you :3

No no, you don't get it. Windows has problems, but switching to Linux would be like leaving your home country because you don't like its political trends. Where's your OS patriotism? There's no need for Linux, because you can just keep using Windows and hope Microsoft ends up doing what's best for their customers products :)

Wait, is it really just 3%? A lot of people I know use Opera, especially the "Gamer Edition", more than even default Chrome. I have the same thing with Firefox, where there's a way higher density in people I know using it than its overall market share, but that bias is to be expected. I'm surprised that it's a similar case with Opera.

As much as I theoretically agree, I can immediately think of two problems:

1. The storefronts would have to communicate

It's against their own interest to do this. Imagine you buy all your games on Steam because of the sales (although the creators of the game of course decide the prices, but still) and then play them on your Xbox. No profit at all for Microsoft, yet they're the ones providing all the additional services like the actual game hosting, friends system, etc. It's not much by any means, but it does add up. The money all goes to Valve. You could even buy the games via the Steam mobile app if you don't even own a PC. Also, even if they were theoretically fine with this, even coordinating it would be a pain. Since you could put a game on the Google Play Store, the App Store, hell maybe even F-Droid, Epic Games, GoG, Steam, the Xbox Store, and the Play Station store, and I am absolutely certain I forgot multiple other options, all of them would need to be able to communicate and decide on if you actually own the game. This would be a logistical and technical nightmare.

2. Companies would just sell mildly different versions and claim it's a new game

You know how for example Undertale has a slightly special Nintendo Switch version where there's... I can't even remember, but I think it's an additional boss. That's just something small and cute, but let's go with the GTA example. I have played about five hours of 5 and dropped it, so excuse me if this isn't the best theoretical example, but let's say the PS5 and Series X/S get the base game. Then the PS6 and new Xbox get maybe five additional cars and the game they're selling is GTA 6 Expanded. Afterwards on switch (although by that time Nintendo's new console would've released) you get blue and red weapon skins or whatever and it's GTA 6 Switched Up. And then finally on PC you get the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition with expanded settings, better graphics, and maybe five more cars on top of those from GTA 6 Expanded. These are all technically not the same game, so you would not be able to claim them. Sure, you could argue they're similar, but where is the exact line? That's quite impossible to figure out - is it a cheated rehash or a mediocre remaster? Who knows

Although for me personally I don't have to retrain that quickly. My resistance to motion sickness certainly gets weaker over time, but I seem to have reached some kind of baseline, compared to my previous state, where about five minutes could give me an awful headache, while now I can take it for a bit longer, even after not being in VR for a month or two.

Speaking of, we need more VR games. I'd love to play more of them, but nothing new is really big and exciting or anything, which is how these long breaks even happen.

It depends on what you're used to and the programming languages you use. I learned typing on a German QWERTZ keyboard and while that works for languages like Python and Haskell, which are indentation-based, but for languages which use braces like Java, C, Rust, or similar, it can be annoying to have to use altgr+7 or altgr+0 for { and }. Thus I switched to a US ANSI layout, which was nicer for those specific characters, but caused problems when typing local characters like öäüß. After switching to Linux I set up a compose key, letting me press compose + a + " for ä for example, and while that's a decent patch, that still breaks the typing flow. So now I'm in my ergo keyboard phase and trying to get my own personal layout going, which meets my own needs for needed characters, based on a colemak-dh design.

I initially wanted to go Manjaro, but was firmly discouraged. EndeavourOS was recommended as a more terminal-centric alternative. The looks here can be replicated on anything with KDE Plasma though, so there are a lot of other distros to choose from with which you can get this same look. Get the Dracula theme, make some new panels, and add widgets to your liking and you basically got what I have here :3

I've already considered Debian, but... I dunno, this isn't what I'd call the most logical reason, but I just kinda don't like it as my desktop OS. I'd use Debian over basically anything else for a server, but as a desktop OS I don't like the vibe.

Keep in mind, I started using Linux this summer and in a few years I'll probably look back at this wondering why I was such an idiot, but I gotta fall and get a bloody nose first to notice ;3

I was considering the VPN option, but as you mentioned for game servers that's not reasonable, and for some of the collaborative tools I'd prefer being able to give people I don't trust that much access, for instance people at work/university, to work together with them on whatever would be needed.

If I just decided to make the home server a home-only server, that would ease a lot of my worries. I guess I could get a personal one, with sensitive info but only home network access, and just rent a second one? It's not like they're that expensive if you're just doing small-scale things and find a decent provider

Edit: To add onto that, if I didn't wanna try new stuff, I'd still be on Windows. I never had any major problems with it until I discovered the things Linux does better, and so if I just went with what seems fine I'd still be using Windows now. There's not an inherent problem with that, of course, but overall the switch has benefited me. I like trying new things, you know?

If you're an expert tightrope walker, you're likely not gonna fall off. You can just do it without too much issue. When you're doing it over a chasm, and you don't plan on dying, you'd still probably prefer a harness though, wouldn't you?

Edit: I'm not saying C is a bad language or anything, but for important applications the safety of actually memory safe languages is vital for lower-skilled programmers and still a good assistance for higher-skilled programmers, as we're all humans and it doesn't hurt to try and avoid the mistakes we will eventually make.

Nope, worked perfectly fine out of the box. I heard bad things about Nvidia and Linux, but I didn't really run into any issues that I can tell are Nvidia's fault so far.

After reading all this, and generally being predisposed towards Arch since my experience with EndeavourOS has been rather comfortable so far^1^, I'd say I've less been rationally convinced of using it, but rather not deterred enough. So I think I'll just go with Arch, but make sure to keep my home folder in a separate partition, so I can bail if needed, with Fedora as my preferred backup.

1: Well, I say it's been comfortable for me, and that's true, but a friend of mine who installed EndeavourOS at the same time as me recently booted his pc up to find a terminal staring back at him. He says he didn't do anything weird, and didn't even update, but who knows. If I understood him correctly, reinstalling (one of) the Kernel(s) (I think he has two installed, one as a backup) fixed the issue. Problem is that this takes time, and when you're not home, with shitty or possibly no wifi, that's gonna be a big problem.

Yep, my first Linux distro after finally abandoning Windows. There's so much to explore! I wanna try some new desktop environments like Gnome, maybe try out Mint or something else Debian-based some time, and either once I get an AMD GPU or it gets more stable with Nvidia, try out Hyprland :3

Yes and no. I've seen people roughly port smaller games over in a single weekend. I'd probably take a guess of about 1-2 weeks, not multiple months. Godot is surprisingly similar. Obviously it's not all gonna be best practice, but since it also supports c#, you can more or less just copy and paste the code and slowly sift through compiler errors, replacing old Unity stuff with new Godot stuff. It's a pain, but not quite as much as you'd expect

Oh yeah, absolutely. As I said, this also just personally bugs me since, while the problem usually solved via context, there are moments where that just doesn't work. That's why I originally even thought of this idea.

I've never used Access personally, so I don't know if it's any good or not, I'm just frustrated by people using spreadsheets for data storage.

As I mentioned in the post, my money budget is around 1000€ as a target, but it extends both up and down. I can stretch if needed, but if that's comically overkill then I'd be happy to go lower. Time budget... not too high, but also not super low. I can certainly spend a day or two setting everything up. Electricity costs are certainly a factor, power prices here were some of the highest globally, even before the extreme increases lately.

Also thanks for the tip of the S3 backup, it's probably a good idea to have an extra copy of important data off-site, yeah.

I mean, I'm using btrfs and I assume everything's fine? Didn't run into any issues so far, apart from when I accidentally forgot to put my swap file into its own subvolume and timeshift didn't let me do backups anymore for a bit until I fixed that, but as far as I know there's an option in the installer where it does all that for you, I just forgot to tick the box

I think it's mostly a problem with rolling updates. Things like Deep Rock Galactic worked perfectly fine for a while and then suddenly the initial screen was entirely black for whatever reason, every time I tried to start it. The game is still playable though, so it's mostly a minor inconvenience. Also, with Team Fortress 2 I have to first switch on Proton, then swap back to native, because it doesn't start at all with proton and if I try to just start it without swapping back and forth, it turns off both my side monitors and changes the middle one's aspect ratio to 5:2 for whatever inexplicable reason. That happened after an update as well. Only one game is entirely broken so far, the rest is just minor inconveniences and I'm waiting for new updates to maybe fix them again.

So yeah, it's mostly fine :3

That is not what it was made for. It was made to do shenanigans with values like doing math on them and plotting graphs. If you merely want data storage, use a table. I agree, a database is overkill for most things, but that doesn't change the fact that Excel is the wrong tool for the job. Maybe if they added a table mode where it's basically just a frontend for a csv it'd work, but right now I'd still say it's better to use a scalpel than a hammer, even if scissors do the trick just fine.

Speaking of seamless, I heard Plasma 6 is gonna come with Wayland as a default now. Do you think it'll automatically switch you over or is it just for fresh installs?

Bleh, consume sounds like an icky word here. But if you want to set up an RSS Feed, get an RSS reader (I personally use NewsFlash, but use whatever you like) and then simply add feeds to it. You can find them on quite a few sites, the icon looks kind of like a wifi symbol. Optionally you could also just install a plugin like Awesome RSS, which automatically finds feeds on the site you're currently on, which can be useful if it's kinda hidden on the site itself
