You will own nothing and you will be happy.

hard drives and SSDs don't count as physical

When was the last time you walked into any store and bought a feature length film or tv show on hard drive or SSD?

Even on a streaming service, the files are stored physically somewhere.

What is your plan when the licence agreement for your favorite series expires on your chosen streaming service and no other streaming service picks up the show?

All media is still, technically, physical media

No one is arguing this. You're making the strawman arguement. The not-so-subtle undertone of the article is clear.

Quoting the article:

The planned job cuts come amid a decline in demand for traditional storage formats such as Blu-ray discs, with streaming services now the norm.

...

The electronics and entertainment conglomerate will also gradually cease production of optical disc storage media products, including Blu-ray discs, according to the sources.

You will not be allowed to legally own tv shows or films and you should learn to like it. As I can tell from many of the other comments here, not many of us are fans of that idea.

So what you're saying is when dog content out numbers cat content, its time to look for the next new platform?

When I first met my wife, she was rocking a Samsung Galaxy S5. It was water resistant and had a removable battery.

Also, devices that are sealed units and claim to be "waterproof" but do not cover water damage under warranty should not be considered waterproof.

Yes, they are a company. Yes, they need to make money. That's what companies need to do. Especially if the rumors that they are looking to do an IPO are true.

Thay doesn't mean they need to be shitty about it. That's why I'm here making this comment, not making a comment on Reddit.

Does it upset me that Reddit is being so shitty (and has been so shitty in the past)? Yes. But I can't control that. I can only control my reaction. So now I'm here trying to make the best of it.

Its the "Leopards eating people's faces party"; not the " Leopards eating my face party". GOSH!

PS - is that a community here yet?

So many tech answers on reddit. Hopefully the community here will bloom soon enough

We need a reminder bot to remind me of this in a years time. I'm guessing you're right.

If you believe the service area maps provided by most US ISPs, not that many.

I was hoping the /s would be implied

Mostly for amazon return labels. I bought a used brother laser printer with an extra cartigdge for like $50, at the time it was a cost I could justify.

6.46" is too large a screen. My pixel 6a is barely small enough. Also, bring back the headphone jack.

[Thick Russian accent]: Foolish man, should not have gotten on a private plane, bad reputation private planes have. Very unsafe in these parts. Oh well, accidents happen...

Wish I had the time/energy to host this much... Currently I'm running

  • Plex
  • Nextcloud (snap on ubuntu VM because its easy)
  • pihole
  • pivpn

I'm also running Jellyfin and Navidrome, in an attempt to determine if they are good alternatives to Plex for like 6 months at this point. See comments above about time/energy.

This is why I inist that each person have their own account on a shared pc.

No company is your friend.

If you're not confident in database management, there is always the Snap version. I know Snap gets a lot of hate, and you do lose some ability to tinker with Nextcloud configuration, but its been pretty solid for me.

Its an older meme, but it checks out.

I was really hoping to see an "Infinity for Lemmy" app. Oh well; Jerboa it is I guess.

Edit: spelling

Alrighty then

Can't speak to OP's reasons, and I am currently torn whether to switch over to jellyfin or not. I am currently running both Plex and Jellyfin side by side with the same media libraries.

I am annoyed by the fact that Plex requires that you log in and authenticate against Plex's own servers to view your own media. I know technically you can set up local access if Plex's servers are not available, but you don't get user account restrictions, watch history, etc when you are not able to authenticate against Plex's servers. If I have an experience that is that degraded, then I consider the service useless unless you are able to access Plex's servers.

Plex's recommendations are stupid and annoying. I am running Plex because I want an easy way to enjoy my own media. The other night, my wife was looking to watch a TV series that I have on my Plex server, which I have watched from my server in the past. When she searched for it, Plex was attempting to get her to watch the series on Hulu (a service that not only do we not subscribe to, but is not even available in our country). We ended up having to browse our TV Library to find it since no search I did would find it.

Plex's recent moves toward monitization are concerning. I understand that Plex is a private company and needs to make money. I am not a fan of the way that they appear to be doing it. It seems like Plex likely will (if they are not already) sell search and watch data to the bigger streaming giants. Maybe the gave away too many lifetime Plexpasses?

That's my two cents.

They can't be lost, they're on instruments up there!

let others connect to that.

I would be surprised if that happened. As we learned in the Apple v. Epic case (we all suspected before hand but was confirmed) Apple has kept I message closed so that parents wouldn't "buy cheaper android phones for their kids".

"250 symmetrical", but my router usually reports around 270ish each way. Recently moved somewhere with fiber to the home.

Previously the cable co I was with kept sending notifications that they had "upgraded" my service. I went from like 100mbps down to like 300 down with them, but they never changed the 10mbps up...

What sort of CAD work to you do? What are you using for CAD?

The snap version of nextcloud has been pretty solid for me, except for the time that I installed the nextcloud backup app.

The apple tv looks good. But can I put software of my choosing on it and will I be able to do everything on the apple tv if I dont have other apple devices?
