I'm an anarchocommunist, all states are evil.

Your local herpetology guy.

Feel free to AMA about picking a pet/reptiles in general, I have a lot of recommendations for that!

I desperately want to know what he thinks his worst idea is

Absolutely not, that guy is eating marketing

There are no countries with socialist policies.

Can you name a country that has workplace democracy? No? Then there isn't a socialist country out there.

Would I move to the social democracies of the world? I love norway and whatnot politically (as much as a communist can love the state of any country)... but I love having warm air and nature I can enjoy without a coat much more.

I don't understand why anyone cares. I'm pro-repost bot, whether a real human posts the content or not makes no difference to me, I just want the content.

Manjaro should not even be considered in the modern distro landscape, the story of manjaro is just a series of incompetent mistakes.

26 more...

Is there anything wrong with that? Hahaha, it's pretty similar but not quite that

Google is extremely insufficient for this due to the insane level of propaganda on BOTH sides of the issue. The only way to get this information is to read theory from the actual philosophers, IMHO, and that's asking a lot.

And that's not even getting into the terminology you have to learn just to understand the philosophers.

For example: most people are under the impression that private property is things that normal people own... but that's not even a little bit what marx means when he says abolish private property, you'll note, that would be insane.

24 more...

That's state capitalism, and has nothing to do with socialism.

The workers control the means of production under socialism, not the government, this makes it in no way socialist by any commonly used definition of socialism by philosophers.

I care a lot about bidens age, actually, I just care that he isn't trump a lot more.

The short version of the story, wait until this has landed in your distro of choice, or you'll have flickering problems.

Yeah I noticed it wasn't actually working and for some reason assumed that it was because it crashed so many times that I ran out of waybars, so I added a million after that, and you're totally right, I know better than that, thanks!

Private property used by marxist philosophers refers to property that generates capital. An example would be a factory.

When marx said abolish private property, what he was really saying is, make it so that factories are owned by the people who work in them, rather than by some rando who has nothing to do with working in them. He was not saying that you shouldn't have the right to own a toothbrush.

Your toothbrush, according to marx, would be PERSONAL property.

Bidet, easy, second choice was an AMDGPU, fuck nvidia.

Well, that's not entirely fair, the gnome developers are pushing the issue upstream to the people who can cure colorblindness, because honestly, isn't curing colorblindness the proper solution even if it takes longer?

Revolt isn't federated which to me makes it not even an option.

Are you being outrageous and arguing in bad faith on purpose?

I genuinely can't tell, in the event that you're not, nobody has ever suggested that janitors should be allowed to do the duties of brain surgeons. Furthermore, even if a single absolutely insane janitor decided he should be allowed to do the duties of a brain surgeon... nobody else would agree with them, because we live in a society with vaguely reasonable humans... and that janitor would likely be democratically FIRED for suggesting something so outrageous, or put in a mental institution.

Or are you worried about the janitor uprising in which janitors decide they can do all jobs known to man? Perhaps nothing can stop the janitor uprising, and we are all doomed.

Gpt4all is easy to use

In what way? I have yet to hear of a single socialist policy from cuba.

Do note: socialism is worker ownership over the means of production.

I actually think 2024 has a very good chance of being the year of wayland, scene graph api just got finished wlroots side, wine is rapidly approaching ready for wayland, sway-side all that's missing is global shortcuts and single window capture (and disabling vsync for games is about to be merged, if you care about that).

It's all rapidly shaping up, they even fixed nightlight nvidia side. I think it all depends on nvidia fixing shit.

Okay, first, to lay some groundwork, there have been many modes of production throughout history

first, there was hunter/gatherer societies, then feudalism, then capitalism

Then we have theories as to what could come next, according to the marxist viewpoint, the next thing will be socialism, and then after that, communism.

So, communism is a post-socialist ideology, the only requirement for it to be socialism is that instead of a bourgeois class and a worker class, they will become unified (doesn't matter how for the purposes of explaining this, but usually through violent revolution)

So, a socialist place would have the workers self-manage, people who work in a place would also have democratic control over that place in some way.

After that happens, for various reasons outside of the scope of an eli5, communism comes, communism is a post-socialist society in which the workers own the means of production (hence the socialist prerequisite), currency has been abolished, the state has been abolished (but not government, these are two distinct entities in socialist thought), and there are no class divisions whatsoever.

Part of the problems with discussions about these topics is that communist philosophers of old used terms in very different ways than the colloquial ways we use them today. I can expand upon this if you have any followup questions!

Sorry, but, no. Pretty much any distro can do all of that perfectly well, the fedoras of the world, the mints of the world, but they don't break constantly.

I have given manjaro to 3 people and used it myself for many years, i got sick of it because the team is incredibly incompetent and just breaks things all the time, i've switched to arch and all of these problems have gone away.

let me give you an example of a design flaw that has caused strife for every single person I have given manjaro, how the kernel is handled.

Manjaro does not let you sudo pacman -S linux, instead, you get linux with the version number as the package, this means for the standard user, your kernel will become outdated, unless you think to go out of your way to update it. This has broken every system of every normal person I have given manjaro at some point, and then i've had to go through GREAT lengths to resolve the issue for them, all of which I had to do from a terminal. Updating the kernel should be the default of any sane distro, and I have never encountered another distro that made this such a hassle by default.

https://github.com/arindas/manjarno

You can read this for other examples of how incompetent the team is, i'm sorry but there's just no usecase for manjaro, if you want a GUI, you should simply use something other than arch, like fedora. I see no advantages to manjaro over arch personally, but if you desperately need a GUI, just use something else instead of trying desperately to hack arch into something that it simply is not.

Manjaro takes the good things about arch, the KISS philosophy, throws that in the trash, adds nothing of value and breaks shit. Endeavoros is the same thing but better in every way, and arch even has an installer now.

Furthermore, if you're in need of a GUI, you're probably going to hate when manjaro finally does break and you're dropped in a terminal with no experience whatsoever, which will inevitably happen.

Hey, they always do exactly as they're told!

4 more...

Yes, they have a tiny, insignificant amount.

An entire country has to have workplace democracy for the country to be socialist.

This is kinda like saying "doesn't any country with a slice of bread have food"

7 more...

That's because like vegans, there is a moral imperative that most ignore or don't care about, we have a genuine emotional attachment to foss, and because you are ignorant of the topic, you don't care to listen.

What he said is harmless, true, and there is a moral imperative to say it, and ontop of that it isn't like a diet, it's better software that respects you, doesn't spy on you, and for free and the only downside is a 15 minute install process (and the use of a flash drive). Why do you care enough to fight that?

38 more...

It's quite simple, right now businesses are structured in a totalitarian manner, socialism seeks to overthrow that totalitarian regime within your workplace, there's a number of ways to do this, nobody is suggesting the janitor should decide how a surgeon does his job, we just want to eliminate the useless position of CEO, and replace it with democratic systems managed by the people who work the jobs.

An easy to understand version of this would be if every company was transformed into a worker co-op, but that of course is only one of many models for socialism.

It is important to note that the government is not the worker, and therefore government control over the means of production DOES NOT COUNT.

There appears to be no difference in quality of the content for me.

Nobody has forced you to do anything, suggesting better, more respectful software is not force, why bother fighting against a more ethical alternative that respects you?

I'll eat my shoe if they do anything of real note

it'll be better than not doing anything but not much

you could just use the gnome fedora spin, this is just about making it not the default.

2 more...

I just use doas because sudo has a bunch of features i don't care about or use, and doas does everything i need while being significantly smaller.

13 more...

No it is not, the simple fact that it updates the kernel with different version numbers means eventually you'll have to manually intervene to update the kernel, this has happened MANY times to the elderly people I used to give it. And that's just one of many things that manjaro has fucked up.

Just use endeavoros for that usecase. There is never a good reason to use manjaro.

https://drewdevault.com/2017/10/26/Fuck-you-nvidia.html

short version: everybody got together and agreed on some standards, nvidia refused to show up, said fuck that, made their own shitty standard that would've caused a massive duplication of everyones effort, all so that they could keep their driver proprietary more easily, and they only recently gave up on this.

There's a ton of other shit like this.

https://invidious.asir.dev/watch?v=Q4SWxWIOVBM

Wayland is not poorly designed or coded, screensharing works perfectly as long as the apps properly support wayland.

That's not a problem with waylands design or code, that's a problem with apps design or code, the thing you may want to take issue with is the notion that we could change things like this while still being poorly supported generally.

I highly recommend, as a beginner and a windows user, using fedora kinoite

It's immutable, which means you can't break the system unless you try very hard, and even then, it'll give you a list of previous setups to boot from, and updates can't break it.

It also keeps the system separate from your apps by using flatpak, the intricacies aren't really important as a beginner but basically this means you'll have an absolutely stable rock solid system that you never have to do weird maintenance for

I would highly recommend trying it out, and i'm absolutely willing to help with any issues you run into, feel free to message me on matrix @communist:mozilla.org or here.

as for your questions:

^ guide is here, a few terminal commands, then you're done

  • Does Wayland work with NVIDIA?

https://community.kde.org/Plasma/Wayland/Nvidia ^Yes, here's the known issues page for kde

  • A lot of distros are moving to Wayland. How would I ensure I stay on an Xorg session?

You choose X11 or wayland on the login screen.

  • I enjoy modding Bethesda games. Does Mod Organizer work fully on Linux?

https://github.com/Nexus-Mods/NexusMods.App

^this is actually the successor, and it works natively on linux.

I used to use mod organizer and it also works although is a bit more annoying to setup.

  • I’ve had difficulties running my steam games through proton on my laptop. Does promton work with Fedora?

Yes, but I recommend installing proton ge through flatpak and setting it as the default with this command:

 flatpak install com.valvesoftware.Steam.CompatibilityTool.Proton-GE

Then go to steams settings > compatibility > enable steam play for all other titles, and run other titles with proton-ge

  • With said difficulties with proton, would installing Steam as a flatpak work or will it cause issues?

That's the only way to do it on kinoite, and will not cause issues.

  • Can you really not play any games with anti-cheat?

Right now as far as i'm aware only easy-anticheat works. With others you're SOL.

edit: use this apparently https://areweanticheatyet.com/

Manjaro should literally never be used, it's a terrible, terrible distro that just makes arch worse and provides little to no benefit.

If you don't want to use a TUI or touch a terminal, try endeavoros.
