Big nerd. Big fan of cool open source stuff. Generally queer. (He/him)

This is one of the cutest things I've ever seen 🥺

Every time I'm struggling to deal with greif, or someone in my life is, I always come back to this post from many years ago on reddit by a user called gsnow (it was in reply to a redditors friend dying, they were asking how they could cope with the pain of that loss):

Alright, here goes. I'm old. What that means is that I've survived (so far) and a lot of people I've known and loved did not. I've lost friends, best friends, acquaintances, co-workers, grandparents, mom, relatives, teachers, mentors, students, neighbors, and a host of other folks. I have no children, and I can't imagine the pain it must be to lose a child. But here's my two cents.

I wish I could say you get used to people dying. I never did. I don't want to. It tears a hole through me whenever somebody I love dies, no matter the circumstances. But I don't want it to "not matter". I don't want it to be something that just passes. My scars are a testament to the love and the relationship that I had for and with that person. And if the scar is deep, so was the love. So be it. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are a testament that I can love deeply and live deeply and be cut, or even gouged, and that I can heal and continue to live and continue to love. And the scar tissue is stronger than the original flesh ever was. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are only ugly to people who can't see.

As for grief, you'll find it comes in waves. When the ship is first wrecked, you're drowning, with wreckage all around you. Everything floating around you reminds you of the beauty and the magnificence of the ship that was, and is no more. And all you can do is float. You find some piece of the wreckage and you hang on for a while. Maybe it's some physical thing. Maybe it's a happy memory or a photograph. Maybe it's a person who is also floating. For a while, all you can do is float. Stay alive.

In the beginning, the waves are 100 feet tall and crash over you without mercy. They come 10 seconds apart and don't even give you time to catch your breath. All you can do is hang on and float. After a while, maybe weeks, maybe months, you'll find the waves are still 100 feet tall, but they come further apart. When they come, they still crash all over you and wipe you out. But in between, you can breathe, you can function. You never know what's going to trigger the grief. It might be a song, a picture, a street intersection, the smell of a cup of coffee. It can be just about anything...and the wave comes crashing. But in between waves, there is life.

Somewhere down the line, and it's different for everybody, you find that the waves are only 80 feet tall. Or 50 feet tall. And while they still come, they come further apart. You can see them coming. An anniversary, a birthday, or Christmas, or landing at O'Hare. You can see it coming, for the most part, and prepare yourself. And when it washes over you, you know that somehow you will, again, come out the other side. Soaking wet, sputtering, still hanging on to some tiny piece of the wreckage, but you'll come out.

Take it from an old guy. The waves never stop coming, and somehow you don't really want them to. But you learn that you'll survive them. And other waves will come. And you'll survive them too. If you're lucky, you'll have lots of scars from lots of loves. And lots of shipwrecks.

(Back to being written by me) aside from making sure you're using healthy methods to cope (DBT has some really helpful coping skills in its "distress tollerance" section that I've used more times than I can count. DBT is a particular school of psychotherapy, like CBT), find yourself a therapist so you have some support with the process. I'm sending love from my corner of the world

Jesus fucking Christ, what a clusterfuck.

I can't wait to not be able to spend google play store credits on renting movies anymore, just like there's no way to spend google play store credits on purchasing albums or songs 🙃

Ayy, let's fucking go.

Glad it was a false alarm, it's nice to have them as an option in the android market

I genuinely do understand concerns about legal issues and the risk of facilitating illegal activities- but its not even hosted on their instance, why would it mater that the communities EXIST. They're literally hosted by someone else...?

Pepper is best when fresh, and its an easy way for them to provide an experience for diners where they feel like someone is giving them special care when it comes to their food, if that makes sense. Salt makes no difference freshly ground. Also, at least in the USA, generally no one will be insulted if you ask for salt; is that an experience you have often? And do you have to ask for salt often? Anywhere I eat they just have salt shakers available, it seems odd to me that they'd make people ask

Protections seem probably more important for putting them through unusual experiences that may involve suffering than killing them for food, as that's essentially predation which they experience as a natural part of life

There's an argument to be had that we as humans are intelligent enough to choose not to put animals through that which is why lots of folks choose to be vegan, but eating animals is more of a personal ethical choice, whereas funding research conducted on animals kinda needs to be a societal one given it's funder by other parts of society, and research is generally for the benefit of society; so society needs to be the ones to decide whether the research is ethical. Not sure I articulated quite what I mmea, but hopefully what I'm trying to say makes sense

Welp. That sucks dogshit :(

Guess its good the zenphone 10 at least came out before this happened, but its frustrating I won't have them as an option in the future :(

I'm using it to type this comment and I REALLY like it! But I will say it tries to do punctuation for me, and that drives me nuts.

(Video is about an open source voice to text, input method for Android, by the way.)

You don't want your ui to be 1980s beige, but like if the plastic has been sitting in a smokers house? Weird.

But yeah, this is material you. Its a feature that makes apps match the colors of your wallpaper, and if you go to "wallpaper and style" in the settings app (at least on my pixel 3, its possible it'd be somewhere else on a phone from a different manufacturer, or potentially even newer phones from google) you can pick other color options

I mean, in fairness, this is a reviewer. I think the obsession with everything being different than it used to be is mostly a consumer, marketing and reviewer thing. Designers certainly have a role to play in the problem too, though.

Aves is the best I've used by far, I just use another app for editing. There's a button to edit in the aves app and you can open a third party app conveniently that way

This is an A+ post, thank you for sharing your undying adoration of beans with us ❤️

I kinda thought this conversation would eventually happen. I have mixed feelings on the subject but am generally inclined not to use the term myself as I find it distasteful. But I think there's an important consideration for those who'd like to discontinue the term rice in this community: what language would we like to use instead? Specifically a good noun for referring to a given setup we've made. In therapy they teach you that stopping a behavior is a very hard thing to accomplish, and that instead you should always try to replace a behavior- I believe that idea is very relevant here

I'd be curious to hear people's thoughts on what they'd like to use instead

I rather liked the piped link bot. It was nice to always be presented with an option 🤷 but thats just me

I would desperately miss customization, and I'm hoping to increasingly move to open source options, so iOS wouldn't really be a good fit for my needs

Yeah, of the google logo colored icons they've been switching to, thats a pretty fun design for the form of it

Unix is a specific operating system, and there are a lot of operating systems based on it or derived from it (Linux, MacOS, BSD, and both Android and ChromeOS which are based on the linux kernel)

Here's a handy link to the Wikipedia page for unix. You may find the intro & history sections more useful than the stuff about what Unix is from a technical perspective, or how it works.

This may be sacrilege, but I don't mind seeing someone's Windows customizations here, though its not what the community is intended for

Futo Voice Input, and there are links in the post ☺️ Weirdly, it doesn't seem to be on Fdroid (yet?), but you can install it as an APK from their website.

Now we're just waiting on fun and cheap electric cars

Borderlands. Couch co-op with my brother was pretty much what videogames was to me as a kid, and borderlands was always our favorite. I can't wait to have a platform I can play borderlands 3 and the tiny Tina game on with him over the Christmases when hes back in town (I know they're not quite as good, thats perfectly okay)

These days, hollow knight is also genuinely very special to me. I don't think there's any game I hold in the same kind of place of reverence

Grayjay is also a cool new option you might wanna look into :) it supports freetube, YouTube, twitch, etc all through one app. Louis rossman has a video up about it on his YouTube channel. Worth knowing its in beta though

A solid, accessible guide for different desktop environments and window mangers is something that's been needed for a long time. Or even just some kinda step by step to recreate an example setup would be super helpful to new folks and could help grow the community.

I think that'd be a plus given the migration to lemmy split things up and shrank the number of contributers here vs reddit.

I only use lemmy via mobile. There are tools available for redirecting on android also but its kinda nice to just have a link 🤷 I think it makes privacy more accessible

Or the sweet ass cyberdecks people build

I like toast honestly

I appreciate you mentioning that, thats how I'm considering using the 5 if it ends up as my phone replacement, but I have a hard time interpreting the info around wireless frequency bandwidths supported 🙃 I like pretty user interfaces, networking hurts my brain

I don't know the answer, but I will engage with the post so that hopefully someone who does will see it :)

I think the point they're making is that updates don't help sell more phones, and selling new phones with contracts is how they make money

You can try Kõnele and Kõnele service, they're open source but honestly how to get them working is beyond me. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I'd previously tinkered with them some but couldn't get it working. If you figure it out I'd love to know what you find or any advice

https://www.f-droid.org/packages/ee.ioc.phon.android.speak/

https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/ee.ioc.phon.android.k6neleservice

Best of luck in your search :)

I think thats an awesome idea but make sure that you are careful to facilitate a healthy space- its very easy for spaces dedicated to really awful parts of the human experience to become so overwhelming in their negativity that they're kind of a toxic cesspool making it harder for people to make their peace with things and cope effectively, rather than easier

Dope! I'm looking forward to it

Open board has an active fork here: https://github.com/Helium314/openboard

It has typing suggestions, backspace and space bar gestures, and now some custom theming. Though it does have a weird bug with backspace behavior in the jerboa app- so does the original openboard and aosp keyboard that openboard is based on.

Its not available on f-droid, though hopefully that'll change in the future, but you can install the apk from the releases tab on github, or you can use obtainium to do that for you and it'll let you know when there's a new release

Christ, thats fucking horrible

That was a misunderstanding- the zenphone line will still be a thing, as will the rog phone line. Both are continuing and will be supported same as they would be previously. There was a post on one of the android lemmy communities, maybe both, with the official statement from Asus

Its going okay, today I got to a higher competitive rank than I've ever reached before in a competitive game I like (splatoon 3) which I'm really proud of. And tomorrow I wake up early for two interviews. I dont actually want either job, but I'm practicing to work through social anxiety. I'm kinda burnt out though, so I'm looking forward to working through all the stuff thats currently on my plate so I can rest again 😅

Lol, syrup would definitely be fun

Thats a nice wallpaper, I like the colors

That's a damn fine URL. Thanks for sharing ❤️

The fun is the important part :) I play a lot of splatoon 3 and although I really like trying to improve I have to remind myself I need to make sure I'm having fun still, and not just getting tilted at my teammates
