Honestly, as a smoker, it's a godsend. The smoke goes away so quickly, it has higher nicotine than cigarettes when purchased the RIGHT way, and since I can now smoke inside, I can puff on it all day every day as I work from home!

In all seriousness, it's worse imo. It sets the precedent from the 50s of smoking EVERYWHERE and now without any of the negative outward effects like smell or yellowing of the teeth/walls.

It's honestly made my addiction worse. To each their own for sure, but in my experience it just made my bad habit SLIGHTLY healthier, but much more accessible.

It requires a significant amount of willpower to break the addiction, but for those of us that do not, definitely do not pick this up. It will not help. If you have that willpower, it is useful.

I'd be happy to apply, but requiring a CV and full background check in addition to a video call interview is a bit steep for me.

Just the video call I'd absolutely be applying, I genuinely believe in Lemmy and want to see it succeed, but not to the point that I'm willing to put this much information into non-employment hands.

Good luck on the search.

Just because something is old knowledge doesn't mean it's common knowledge!

People get so weird about that. Yeah I knew, but before I knew, I didn't.

You are correct, but the topic is applying as an admin, so I replied to the topic.

Hi. System Admin millennial here.

You would think that's the case, but in my experience it's not.

Millenials were around during a major shift/evolution in general home computer use, so we're much closer to understanding the "flow" of tech, even if it's older. Gen-Z tries to think in smartphone or tablet mode.

Younger Gen-Z are the same as a blue collar boomer: when the company I work for hires a Gen-Z employee, I spend a ton of time with them the first few weeks "fixing" their "broken" machines. Most of the Millenials that are hired can do the general troubleshooting themselves.

I will agree with the music bit though.

Hello fellow admin.

Feel the same way. The most secure network is only as secure as its dumbest user.

Sadly we're still a couple hundred years off of that being less of a concern :/.

EVERY entry in the MGS series from ps1 onward in its entirety (minus Survive) is one of those "if only I could play it for then first time again" games.

Have you ever played them or is this your first time through the series?

While not strictly required

Technically true, but verbiage leads me to believe its more required than not.

Holy shit the name is perfect.

Can I beg to become a Lem-pire once I use the site? Instructions not clear.

Honestly the single biggest thing to self-hosting is breaking stuff.

Host stuff that seems interesting to you, and dick around with it. If it breaks, read the logs and try to fix. If you can't, revert to a backup and try to reproduce.

If you start out with things that interest you, you'll more likely stick with the hobby. From there you can move to hosting things with external access - maybe vpn inside your own network through your router?

From there, get your security in line and host a basic webserver. Something small, low attack vector, and build on it. Then expand!

Definitely recommend docker to start with - specifically docker compose. Read the documentation and mess around!

First container I would host is portainer. General web admin/management panel for containers.

Good luck :).

This is the way.

Don't buy for the MINIMUM of what you need now. Give yourself some room to grow.

Goes by Major Zero now.

He misremembered the name of the hole.

Someone found Slender's pages

I honestly can't tell if you're trolling.

Also, "limiting their consumption to the occasional worthwhile thing" can also be written as:

"spend their well-earned time actually watching something worth the investment"

And "they might even assuage their guilt by paying for it..." as:

"if they find content they enjoy, they'd like to show that monetarily and hopefully boost the production of more content of that same caliber"

Sarah Lynn?... Sarah Lynn...?

I honestly still use iTunes as a manger for my music, and doubletwist on android to sync solely because it moves over the smart playlists as well. I have WAY more music than necessary and I'm very meticulous about what music goes where.

If the iTunes playlists could sync natively to plex it really wouldn't be that much of an issue and I'd stream from my server :/.

I live in the middle of nowhere bumfuct Egypt. Randomly a Mattress Firm popped up in my town. Been there over a year now.

Immediate ??? was to be had.

I have NEVER seen a SINGLE VEHICLE in the parking lot. Not even staff inside. Wtf is this??

Then again there is a pretty heavy cartel family that moved here and bought the sheriff a hummer a while ago so. But they already have a couple well known washing stations for their cash so who knows?

You can TRY power line adapters:

TP-Link AV2000 Powerline Adapter https://a.co/d/0fa6e3f3

Their application can be hit or miss, but mine have been perfect. Had them just under 2 years. Able to get full bandwidth and no discernable latency addition

Sys admin here.

Hosting on-prem email at work took years off my life. Going to work on the other and report back

Definitely me. I'm big time into movies because when I was a kid my parents, my brother and I would all watch movies together. Legitimately like 3 times a week.

I was ALWAYS the last one awake. I'd get up, put my brother to bed, and let my parents sleep.

I could also quote the movie exceedingly well even after one watch at a young age - just because the world around me basically ceased to exist when a flick was on.

Mom would sometimes wake up and go to bed in their bedroom on her own and I wouldn't notice, with her sitting 5 feet from me.

Maybe it's ignorance on my part, but my office and the router in the house aren't on the same circuit.

Or, at least they have different sections in the breaker.

House is brand new, put up in 2021

So the issue here for me is lack of pay.

Asking me this through straight employment is an agreement that protects both the worker and employer in some capacity.

Asking this through volunteer work makes me uneasy.

I'm completely happy to volunteer my time to an org that I believe in, Lemmy being a ptime example, but not willing to do so in the case of requiring this information up front.

If you can self host, I recommend Pihole (or some other self-serving dns) with hosts.

I use Steven Black's myself: https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts

This is oddly similar to some informal workups I've done for our work network.

Nice work 👍.

Yeah same boat here.

Testosterone got the better of me weight lifting in high school and I fucked up the ligament that holds my left kneecap down.

I pop and crack like a 70 year old and I'm 29 (been happening since I was 17) and I can't keep my left knee bent for long periods of time without it aching.

I'm trying to stay young by playing video games (primarily rocket league) but they don't feel the same as when I was younger. That was my actual sign.

Soulseeker for some excellent yo-ho-ho and honestly iTunes for management.

Yeah extremely jealous of that lol. Enjoy the ride, it's a wild one.

As you should be!

After quite a long while working with someone to this capacity, it would be strange not to be on first name basis, but I haven't worked with you.

I've been on the internet for a very long time, and it takes quite a bit of rapport to build before I'm comfortable giving out my first name, let alone my full name.

I definitely understand where you're coming from, just a stretch at the start for me personally.

Really love the admin team though!

Accidently seen cp on the dark web about 15 years ago. That's nice.

Also a few years ago stumbled on a guy torturing a fly. Just a normal house fly. It was pinned against what looked like cork and the poster starting tearing off a limb every second or so giggling.

I know it was just a fly, but it was extremely unsettling.

Last I checked it doesn't work with smart playlists :(. I'll check into it again, it may have been updated.

Spreading democracy for the glory of Super Earth!

Sys admin here for quite some time.

This is pretty typical in our field I've found, because that's what it takes to move up in this field.

Non-CS just believe the "oh you work with computers? So you must know how to hack Facebook" logic, so they have to either say they don't know how and look stupid, or just rattle off some absolute bonkers shit that uses acronyms and such above the non-CSs head.

This eventually bleeds into their reality and becomes a character trait.

It's more a human/culture problem than a CS problem but I get what you mean :)

Honestly I'm not super concerned about the contents being public.

As far as a forum/wiki, I'd like it to look like it was meant for this job, those would be a little more on the hefty side just for posting some images/text to.

I would build it myself but I've got a 4 month old. Not a ton of time to sit down in React.

... I blame the kid's sleep regression and my lack thereof.

I'll give this a shot, thanks!

Yep that's exactly what I thought too. I do like how simple the movie/tv management CAN be (assuming naming structures are correct) but a lot is lost in the weeds of simplicity.

Well, TV management is easy unless it's anime (looking at you DBZ). Or looney toons. Ended up having to buy a license to file bot for dbz.

Yep same thing.

Moved from Nova to Niagara after trying about 30 different launchers (closed and open) and I don't think I'll be changing for quite a long time.

Being that I now vape from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed simply due to accessibility, I'd say it's worse.
