Thanks to https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/u/ober found that ipleak.net can be used to check if you VPN is leaking your IP before proceeding with torrenting.

And also using Qbittorrent to tie the client to the VPN by going to Tools > Preferences > Advanced and changing network interface to your VPN.

Noticed there's a lot of geeky people on lemmy, and so many seem to be using stuff like linux in threads asking what OS do you use. Which is definitely a big outlier from the average user. So seems like even if the numbers aren't high that there's a lot of people who can provide tech support to dumb people like me.

Nothing would surprise me these days after seeing a Skyrim mod with an AI companion you can talk to.

Some people here are saying i2p may be the future https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/259433 Sounds like Qbittorrent is planning to provide i2p support too. So hopefully port forwarding won't matter as much for future releases.

I've relied on this mega thread for a long time.

Are there any tips to see check if VPN isn't leaking anything when torrenting? Mullvad used to let you check with a magnet link they provided before they got rid of it.

Interesting, but I'm confused how it can be applied to piracy.

Kind of hard to notice copyright laws when I'm busy sailing and feeling the fresh ocean breeze.

I'm a billionaire. I have my own private island that floats above the world and I can also teleport anywhere in an instant and open portals into other dimensions. And I have a pet dragon named Sparkles.

Pirates adapt or die. So at the very least you have increased your chances of survival. Don't know if sharks will eat you though.

Or in more official terms. This is not a declaration of piracy. We are only conducting special archival operation.

If the community is as important to the users as you believe them to be then those who truly do value the resources of the community will move.

I value the resources of r/FREEMEDIAHECKYEAH and /r/piracy over the years so much that I came to lemmy. I didn't see /r/piracy's initial plans to do an indefinite shutdown as something that would hurt me, but something I fully supported and was more than happy to join them on lemmy to find a new home.

Reddit was why I found communities like those two, but reddit was not what I needed for them to always have to be on. Those who don't feel the same will just run off to whatever other piracy resource is there regardless of whether mods or removed or different.

So I guess what I'm trying to say as one of the regular people is you don't need to worry so much about hurting us.

Yeah, I'd prefer it to be a resource educating and assisting people to the best options to go to than to actually be sharing direct file links or anything like that. There's other sites that are handling that side.

x265 because I like the file size and am satisfied with the quality.

Well we did at least.

I believed the same, but in /r/piracy have seen people helping those inquiring about what lemmy is and how to get set up getting help. I thought it wouldn't help, but people visiting reddit from lemmy are actually assisting reddit users who need help moving. It isn't just meme posting going inside the comments themselves.

Not sure what you are asking for, but one thing I can recommend is that for qbittorent to go to settings > Advanced > Network Interface to tie your VPN to the client. This will help in the event your VPN cuts out reducing chances of your IP address leaking.

Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for.

I use newpipe already so it's a quick download of video or audio file from newpipe itself as I'm looking through subscription.

Don't even need to do that. Just need to point to what happened to /r/megalinks

Looked through the archive from 2019 /u/qefbuo said

Personally I think we should move to a decentralized network like Diaspora, anywhere we gather that's centralized is on borrowed time.

Or what more recently happened with r/newyuzupiracy

When reddit decides a ban hammer is going to strike there is no warning.

People are so brain dead that they think the only place to get answers on piracy is reddit. Even 4chan is better if they can't be bothered to come here or raddle or any piracy forums that exist outside of reddit if they are left that clueless.

Should nuke the stuff on reddit, and give it back to them to figure it all out for themselves. They can have their sub if they want to talk piracy on reddit that much. Probably go about recommending piratebay to each other to download software and games.

That should be the way for every sub really. Just wipe and leave it unmoderated and tell the people who are whining to go mod it themselves now that it's back open.

And if you don't understand it and you do find yourself needing to do some terminal stuff chatgpt can be helpful breaking down what is going on.

What is debrid?

Yeah, in the end I'm here for people who know more than me providing good resources. And if they can't figure out even making a lemmy account then they probably weren't much help beyond memes. And I'm dumb shit, so it's not like it takes competence to make an account.

Absolutely vital for anyone who uses an ebooks.

Why does purpose or ethics matter. It is called piracy and not robin hood.

Whatever the intent, it incentives archival even with selfish purposes across different decentralized sources, which is pretty valuable with that huge amount of data that would be expensive for a centralized entity to archive on their own. Not to mention a single point of failure. So even selfishness is leading to helping history not be lost.

And you think 100 years from now or longer if some random historian comes across some still working storage containing long lost media that a pirate had kept they are going to care about the legality of that at the time?

And don't forget how much game versions change from launch, so new version is history too. Same for movies and shows and books with how editing has been done that's led to loss of the original copy. And led to reliance of fans to restore content like Star Wars.

It is happening now with Netflix too where now the pirated versions of some Netflix show is the only way to see what was originally shown.

"We have George Lucas’d things also that people don't know about," the siblings told Variety, referring to the Star Wars director's much-critiqued altered re-releases of the original franchise. "It's not, like, story, but you're essentially patching in shots."

The MCU's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is barely a year old, but even the Marvel superhero miniseries isn't immune from Disney's re-editing efforts. In March 2022 some devoted Reddit fans discovered that a scene where Bucky throws a pipe through a woman's shoulder had been altered so that woman falls back on the pipe instead.

GAMES GAMES GAMES GAMES GAMES!

Do you use handbreak to do it? And what settings? Is it something that needs to be played around with to see how output is, so doing small segment to determine what is ideal?

As much as I complain about denuvo I still do buy the games even if they do get cracked. I don't pirate any PC games, since exes are just not something I want to risk. I've got a collection of legal games that surpasses the availability of gamepass. PC gamepass advertisement says 'Play over 100 high-quality games on Windows PC.' That's a baby collection compared to what I got in my legal library of games. That's not even bringing GOG into the mix.

I dedicated an old laptop running Linux to pirating material. Can get all the programs I need right from the included software app that is in a lot of distros to get Qbittorent and Jdownloader. Linux is awesome.

Then go open up your own sub if you want a piracy sub on reddit that much. You think it's the name that makes a sub special? Could be /r/shitideas and if you made it focused on piracy it'd be a piracy sub. Acting like there's something stopping you from starting up your own. If anything it being /r/shitideas would make it easier to go under the radar and attract less attention from being shut down. Step up if you want it.

Whether pirates have wanted or not if they pirated long enough they have experience lot of things being killed off. Torrent sites they relied on dying and disappearing for good like rarbg. Recent reddit causality being r/newyuzupiracy. Direct links being killed off like megaupload. Discord channels dedicated to piracy or jailbreaking being banned and killed off (why isn't stuff like matrix more common instead of hoping Discord ignores them?).

The constant search for new methods to piracy p2p, torrents, usenet, i2p, irc, discord bots, telegram bots, etc.

It's not an area that has stability so pushes people to constantly be searching and finding new ways to pirate. Being on centralized places has always been borrowed time. Piracy in the long run always ends up having to search for a new home, better places, better methods. It's a nomadic lifestyle in the digital space by the nature of it and the hostility towards pirates from those in power.

But, one thing that has remained a constant has been decentralization. With no better representation of that spirit than bittorrent. As long as a few people have it the source remains alive.

This is the type of guides I love. It is so thorough and educates people like me who are clueless on the process.

Nothing they love more than back ups of back ups.

Just go to be sure the download the clean adware free version from what I remember. Easy for Linux though since it is available in the repo. On windows I think you go to the page https://jdownloader.org/jdownloader2

Been a long time since I used it on Windows.

My instance didn't require me to get an email, but if they did so you can use those email forwarders like simplelogin, duckduckgo, or firefox.

Sir this isn't a Wendys

Sometimes the waves push us apart but we eventually find our way back matey! Arrrrrrr

Libraries are awesome and more people need to use them.

Check the megathread on the side it has everything.

But, from what is recommended on there I have found torrentgalaxy coming close to rarbg.
