I imagine this is the kind of sentiment that really scares the Israeli government and probably the people of Israel. Most people didn't really care before but now everyone has an opinion on Israel and it's generally not good. Potential political isolation aside, the social isolation's gonna be a big problem for them too.

That was my first thought too; would this improve treatment for serious burn victims and such. Sounds like what they've made is better overall for sticking to applied surfaces and moving without tearing. Heck, maybe this could even lead to prosthetics that allow physical sensation

I honestly hadn't considered that eBook licensing data could be used in the way they describe in the article. EBooks becoming part of big data surveillance somehow feels especially disheartening to me.

Lately I feel like I've been duped for years since I used to believe strongly in the phrase "if you're not paying for it, you're the product" but it feels like with every paid product or service nowadays you're STILL the product...

It's so crazy to me that they throw this word around and they haven't come up with a shared definition. I know the article cites that lady who stumbled with the definition last year saying "it’s hard to explain in a 15-second sound bite" but after all this time, you'd think they'd have figured out some kind of ELI5 explanation.

I also don't accept that same person's line of "It is sort of the understanding that we need to totally reimagine and redo society in order to create hierarchies of oppression" because I'd argue what so called "woke" media tries to do is be aware of inequalities that already exist, not create them. But I suppose if they said it that way they'd have to recognize that current systemic inequality is a real thing.

Lots of reasons to hate on the anti-woke movement but at this point, this in particular really bothers me for some reason.

Most moral army in the world

I hate how not surprising this is and how little it will change anyone's views

After the case where courts ruled in favor of a person who got false information from a chat bot about bereavement fare for flight tickets, you now have a case for setting up a cannibalism business and suing when they try to stop you

There's really no end to the depth of Clarence's moral bankruptcy... Not even responding to your "son" when he's struggling and reaching out.

“I actually don’t know if they know that I’m locked up—I’m not sure they’d care too much,” Martin said. “I’ve seen—I’ve probably seen them two times, maybe three times, over the last 14 years.”

Fucking cold... I really hope Martin's able to get the help he needs as well

Somehow I think Podcasts will survive enshittification. The basis is just RSS and file hosting, so at its core, it's possible to create and distribute podcasts without huge capital investment. There's always gonna be some people trying to get their voices out and Podcasts still seems to be the easiest way to do that so until some better method comes out, podcasts will live on.

If you're talking about Podcast networks, streaming services, ad networks, then yeah, those might face some kind of enshittification and destruction, but no matter what, I'm pretty confident some good podcasts, and some good ways to listen to them, will stick around.

I luckily don't have any major incidents but a couple stick out in my memory.

First time I realized an encounter was racist was my first time at a summer camp in the US around age 12.

I went with a friend to line up for the showers in the morning and it was just us two and another kid. I barely noticed he was there cause I was caught up in conversation. Not long later some other kids walk in and the waiting kid just blurts out in relief "Thank god, I was the only white guy here!" And even in my innocent, privileged little 12 year old brain I knew that was kind of fucked up.

Also had a South African girl break up with me as a teen cause her parents literally cited my nationality as an issue... While they were living in my country...

IIRC, that was actually the plan. I remember Microsoft saying way back that 10 would be the last version of Windows and everything would be just upgrades to 10 moving forward.

It's like we're reverting to the days you would go to homestarrunner.com, illwillpress, etc to see content from people you actually wanted to see content from. Honestly looking forward to it

Was gonna say Outer Wilds as well. It's such an amazing experience and kind of made me rethink what video games can be as art and just... an experience. Can be finished really quick though for me it took a good chunk of time.

I'll also reiterate, don't look up spoilers. The game is so much about exploration and discovery that going in blind is best.

So me seeing ads in random languages is not me being clever with identity obfuscation, but big data being big stupid?

And thank you for your work in accessibility 🫡

Crypto - Meh, I have digital banking and payment processing already, with easy enough international transfers. I'm good.

AI - I see the possibilities, I think we should continue to develop it even if just for the medical applications of machine learning. Right now people just like playing with it, but, privacy issues aside, I don't think it's a waste.

Makes sense, we know how much the US likes to spread democracy

I get like this in any sort of "real time passes" games, with some exceptions. If you have a limited amount of time to do a limited amount of things in game, my mind starts min/maxing what I should be doing every moment in game. In Outer Wilds the passage of time matters less cause you always start back at zero, what you gain each run is just knowledge, you don't lose out and fall behind on any resources, points or whatever cause you didn't do certain things that day.

I used to sail the seas like freakin Luffy, but Netflix and Steam (plus becoming a wage earning adult) got me on the straight and narrow for a good long while. Then when all the different services started to compete I started dipping my toes in the water again with some sense of guilt. But after various struggles getting Netflix running in different locations I frequent and my parents not being able to use my account anymore, I have no shame flying the Jolly Roger.

I know nothing about guns but I wanna know, what happens if he starts firing that thing?

Good. Unfortunately it feels like far too little, far too late, and reading the article maybe only a one off thing for a particular shipment. Wondering if the article is just trying to paint the US as pushing back against the Israeli government without actually doing anything substantive.

A friend in high school made nude drawings of another mutual friend. It was weird he showed me but he was generally an artsy guy and I knew he was REALLY into this girl and it was kind of in the context of showing he his art work. I reconnected with the girl years later and talked about this and while she said it was weird she didn't really think much of it. Rather, the creepy part to her was that he showed people.

I don't think we can stop horny teens from making horny content about their classmates, heck, I know multiple girls who wrote erotic stories featuring classmates. The sharing (and realism) is what turns the creepy but kind of understandable teenage behavior into something we need to deal with

I tried Minecraft way back, so maybe it's changed, but I don't do to well in setting my own goals in a game. I liked Subnautica because there was an interesting story element and mystery that kept you engaged as you moved towards your goal of getting off planet. In the process of reaching the goal, yeah, I wanna make my base look nice, wanna build some cool things, but my overall actions were still being compelled by the storytelling and world-building of the game. I don't see those elements in Minecraft but again, it's been a long time since I played.

Somehow suddenly remembering that feeling of discovering the head of Team Rocket, that I'd been fighting all this time, was the final gym leader and having my little mind blown.

At this point it's an internet inside joke, and like any niche inside joke, there's a bit of a rush when you recognize it, that you're in on something special. In the beginning it was mostly just mocking the absurd sudden tone shift in the original Ctrl+Alt+Del comic but like a lot of memes it seems to have evolved and now the fun is creating and finding the loss pattern in unique and different ways.

I like it, it's fun

Having lived in two of those three countries, a lot of the internet is randomly censored. Browsing in Malaysia I'd sometimes get some kind of government page popping up with no idea why the site I was trying to visit was blocked (blocked porn sites are a given in both Malaysia and Indonesia but honestly, just random sites kept showing up blocked). Indonesia blocked tumblr for a good long while, and I'm pretty sure Reddit still is. Plus in Indonesia, I really don't trust ISPs to keep my data safe, intrusive ads are everywhere to the point I've blocked SMSs from any number I don't know because the moment I got an Indonesian SIM my phone started blowing up with ads.

This is an official government chat bot apparently.

From the article:

The announcement touted the ChatBot as a way for business owners to "save ... time and money by instantly providing them with actionable and trusted information from more than 2,000 NYC Business webpages and articles on topics such as compliance with codes and regulations, available business incentives, and best practices to avoid violations and fines."

IIRC, that was part of the deal buying this and part of what made it so expensive and unique. News article at the time talked at length about the secrecy aspect. Kinda dumb IMO but I understand a super fan wanting to own something like this. The fact that this A hole bought it instead then immediately broke contract...

In recent years I've gotten a couple 8BitDo controllers that I love.

As a kid though I think I had one Wildcat controller for the N64 that I felt was lucky, but besides that I was never even aware of what brand my controllers were, it was just whatever you could convince your parents to buy you.

I'm reminded that I used to do exactly this in Ocarina of Time back when I was a kid. Maybe it's time to relive those days.

There's a decent Legend of Korra game by Platinum. Simple, short beat-em-up in the style of something like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta

I mean, if we go back to the original Haitian term, they'd act like slaves who've been drugged up and/or made to really believe that they are "trapped" in their own bodies, mindlessly following orders. Here's an article with some interesting journalism on zombies in Haiti in relatively recent years: https://www.harvardmagazine.com/2017/10/are-zombies-real

Pop-culture zombies though, I suppose they'd move as much and as well as they could before their muscles and bones can't physically keep up with whatever is compelling them to move.

It literally became one of my favorite Ghibli movies for this very reason, I hadn't even heard about it before I watched it, but it's absolutely amazing

Completely stopping tracking for shopping especially is gonna be impossible, but since you say "least trackable" I think there is some obfuscation you can do. Keep in mind, I'm by no means a security expert or anything, but general paranoia at the state of the internet has made me interested in trying to obfuscate my online identity for a while now (I say as I post on Social media...), so I've got some things I've found helpful

A simple easy thing is to start using browser containers for your different identities, which is built into Firefox. This way, details of one identity are less likely to leak into another, as in, what you search for in one identity isn't gonna end up in the shopping results of another. Related to this, I'd look at script blockers and other extensions that can stop trackers. My go to is NoScript but I get some people don't like it cause it's fiddly and can break sites. I've heard good things about Ghostify but haven't tried it myself. Getting started with NoScript way back, it was crazy to see how many different useless trackers and scripts were loading in the background that you don't even see and are apparently completely unnecessary to the functioning of a site.

Then I'd also recommend using a VPN. I love it when I see ads being served to me from completely random countries because of how often I change my location, confirms that whatever advertising service that for whatever reason slipped by my blockers still don't even know my general location.

And that's about it off the top of my head. If I can think of more I'll come back and edit my post.

There's dozens of us!

Yeah, when I want to just jot some words down quick in Windows, Wordpad has always been my go-to, but main thing for me is opening .txt files. Maybe I'm dumb and there's some Notepad default layout thing I never bothered figuring out, but I don't want to have to scroll right to read long lines of text.

Man, sounds like we're in very much the same vibe, think I'll give City Skylines and/or Satisfactory a go

So far this one looks the most like what I'm familiar with, so probably will try it first! The save format not being stable might be a deal breaker for now though as like I said, I move between devices a lot.

My deleted message was me accidentally replying to the wrong post.

You've described my perfect smart watch. I hate the rush for features and better brighter touch screens when all I want is a non intrusive notification device that won't accidentally call my boss fat when my wrist grazes any other part of my skin.

The Pebble was too good and spoiled my opinion of every smart watch I've used since.
