Met my first wife when I was in my 20s, she was a bit older, already divorced with kids. We were together for over 10 years, and one of her sons lived with us off and on during his teenage years. We enjoyed all the benefits of a childless existence - disposable income, freedom to do whatever we wanted evenings/weekends, etc, etc.

Eventually our marriage broke down. The reasons for it are entirely unrelated to us not having kids, but we were definitely not destined to be together for the rest of our lives.

About a year or so later I met an incredible woman, and I truly learned what it meant to have a soulmate. We were awesome together. She already had two young kids - 6yo and 9yo - and, a year or so later again, we had our own baby girl. We married a couple of years after that.

We now have a family that includes an amazing 21yo woman, a fabulous 18yo fella, and a beautiful 10yo daughter. My life is complete and I can't imagine it without any of them in it.

I've written my wiki so that, if I end up shuffling off this mortal coil, my wife can give access to one of my brothers and they can help her by unpicking all the smart home stuff.

I’m using self hosted wiki.js and draw.io. Works a treat, and trivial to backup with everything in Postgres.

It doesn't have to be hard - you just need to think methodically through each of your services and assess the cost of creating/storing the backup strategy you want versus the cost (in time, effort, inconvenience, etc) if you had to rebuild it from scratch.

For me, that means my photo and video library (currently Immich) and my digital records (Paperless) are backed up using a 2N+C strategy: a copy on each of 2 NASes locally, and another copy stored in the cloud.

Ditto for backups of my important homelab data. I have some important services (like Home Assistant, Node-RED, etc) that push their configs into a personal Gitlab instance each time there's a change. So, I simply back that Gitlab instance up using the same strategy. It's mainly raw text in files and a small database of git metadata, so it all compresses really nicely.

For other services/data that I'm less attached to, I only backup the metadata.

Say, for example, I'm hosting a media library that might replace my personal use of services that rhyme with "GetDicks" and "Slime Video". I won't necessarily backup the media files themselves - that would take way more space than I'm prepared to pay for. But I do backup the databases for that service that tells me what media files I had, and even the exact name of the media files when I "found" them.

In a total loss of all local data, even though the inconvenience factor would be quite high, the cost of storing backups would far outweigh that. Using the metadata I do backup, I could theoretically just set about rebuilding the media library from there. If I were hosting something like that, that is...

I have my own domain that uses a specific 2-letter ccTLD - it's a short domain variation of my surname (think "goo.gl" for Google). I've been using it for years, for my email.

That was the last straw. I cracked the shits, bought a couple of ex-enterprise servers, and setup ... something different. I then cancelled all streaming services (I got wind of the second Disney hike coming).

The cool thing is they now email me with cheap rejoin offers, telling me about all the cool shows I need to be aware of. ;)

My biggest problem isn't discovering my own crime. It's trying to determine what my motive was at the time.

The thing I don't get (I do - it's greed, FYI) is why the fuck they even care? If I'm paying for 2 or 4 screens on my Netflix account, why the fuck does it even matter which address they're playing at? Netflix were about to sting me because my stepkids (who are with us half the time) were using my account while at their dad's.

Believe it or not, Netflix finally drove me to Plex. I'd been holding out, still using Kodi, but decided the money I was saving could go towards a much nicer setup, and it did. A pair of HP DL380 G7s, Proxmox - the works.

Now my stepkids use my Plex server, and have both happily streamed the latest Black Mirror from it (shit season, BTW - another hump in the downhill shitshow that Netflix has become). And the savings from my cancelled Netflix sub will have paid for it over the next 12 months or so.

Australia here - our change to gun control was well covered by John Oliver some years back but, in short, we had a mass shooting in 1996 (Port Arthur) that resulted in 35 deaths and 23 wounded, that changed Australia's mindset forever.

Our Prime Minster at the time worked with all states and territories to enact stricter laws on licensing and obtaining firearms. Yes, we've had crimes classed as mass shootings (4+ casualties) since, but nothing on the scale of Port Arthur - primarily because the change in laws reclassified semi-automatic weapons, and made them harder to obtain.

Before then, I'd shot guns with my dad - we'd enjoyed target shooting as a moderate hobby. But, aside from that, we had no other good reason to keep firearms, and my dad handed them in during the buyback scheme. We played our part in over a million weapons being handed back and destroyed, and I have no regrets. I'm now raising my child in a society where gun violence is considered rare, and I'm happy with that.

This may not be at the top of my "excessive" list, but it's the most recent. I bought a pair of ex-enterprise HP servers and a 32RU rack to hold them, so I could cancel my Netflix subscription.

I think part of the problem is that so many people nowadays are conditioned to consuming information in bite-sized chunks (eg. tweets), they now just focus on key words and assume they have all the context they need.

It's akin to the problem I see with technical support help desks, be it the IT support team at work, or my ISP or mobile provider.

They read a few words and parrot the nearest response from their knowledge base/AI bot, and call it a job well done.

I'm literally dealing with this at work right now. Three times on my ticket I've been told to undertake a series of steps, which I not only stated I'd done when I first opened the ticket, but I also attached screenshots proving it.

Yep - this. I absolutely abhor "smart" TVs for just this reason.

But, even lack of internet sometimes isn't enough. I recently, and inadvertently, left the wireless adapter on my TV enabled, after having to temporarily join it to my wireless for a firmware update (digital TV tuning needed updating for my region). After I was done, I cleared the wireless config, but I didn't think to go into the other menu where you can entirely disable the wireless adapter.

Little did I realise that meant the TV started broadcasting its own SSID, for friggin' Apple Airplay or some other shit. I found this out when my 9yo daughter was suddenly exposed to some adult content for about 10 seconds. Best guess is a nearby neighbour mistook my TV for theirs.

I've obviously disabled the wireless adapter again, but this has been a terribly difficult lesson I've had to learn.

For anyone concerned, my daughter is OK. My wife had a good chat with her about it. She had considerably more talking down to do with me - I was ready to start knocking on doors, to have my own chat.

It's a legit rule they're enforcing, IMO. Generic email addresses are usually unmonitored mailboxes that don't bounce. Easy to use if you're spamming contact forms and stuff like that.

I think this is more a boilerplate suggestion, to lower the barrier to entry for people. Gotta remember, those of us that host our own email and/or use our own personal domains are definitely in the minority.

I'm not having trouble giving up Reddit. I've given it up. And I've definitely noticed the lower volume of content here on Lemmy/the fediverse, but:

• it's getting better pretty much daily; and
• the percentage of good quality content here far exceeds Reddit, so I still feel better off.

Tossing in my vote for Proxmox. I'm running OPNsense as a VM without any issues. I did originally try pfSense, but didn't like it for some reason (I genuinely can't recall what it was).

Either way, Proxmox virtual networking has been relatively easy to learn.
