Probably not the type of answer you're looking for, but I've got a few that happened outdoors.

The first was when me, my brother, and some friends hiked up some train tracks to go to a ghost town at the top of a mountain near where we'd recently moved. About a 6 hour hike in. My brother was ahead of us, around 100 feet/30 meters ahead. He suddenly turns around, yells "TRAIN!" and the next thing we know, there's a fuggin train coming around the bend. There's only around 6-7 feet/2 meters of space between a rock wall and the tracks. We jump off the tracks and push up against the wall. With our packs on our backs (we were going to be camping for a week, so they were large packs), it felt like I could have stuck out my tongue and touched the train. The scariest part was that none of us saw if my brother had been hit. It happened too fast. The train took forever to pass, it felt like an eternity. I just knew my brother was dead, I was terrified. When the train finally passed, we rushed to where he'd been, and found that when he jumped off the tracks, he wasn't against the wall, he was in a sort of spring/small pond, 10 feet/3 meters lower than the tracks, soaking wet. Terrified we'd been hit. First words out of his mouth were "cigarette. Now!" He was unharmed.

Next scariest thing was when me and some friends went driving in a national forest near us, and her car broke down. We walked up what we thought was the road, but turned out to be a trail. Someone started shooting at us. We ran like crazy and made it back to the car. Tbh, I don't remember how we got her car home...

Mitch is gonna be fine, unfortunately. He just needs to consume the soul of another several hundred children to recharge the battery where his heart should be.

I haven't blocked anything yet. I just signed up and I'm having trouble finding anything. My timeline is just the same few things repeating. How are you all seeing stuff you haven't subbed to?

I tell myself it was a deer. It was a deer. I truly believe that. ... Most days. But whenever September rolls around, and I ride past the flowers and the small cross, I can't help but wonder if it really was a deer... Either way, I can't do anything about. It was just a deer.

Just a deer.

That's not how radiation exposure works. The types of mutations in DNA it causes is generally things like cancer, not birth defects that transfer into future generations. In order for the number of fingers human-wide to change, there would need to be a specific mutation for that, and that mutation would have to be beneficial enough that the 11+ or 9- fingered folks would be more likely to breed than us 10 fingered folks.

On top of that, while base 10 is convenient because of our fingers, it's unlikely to change due to how ingrained it is in our culture at this point. It's also hardly the only system we've used. The Babylonians used a base 60. Many cultures have used base 12. Base 12 is actually very convenient for our fingers already.

Hold your left thumb against the first segment of your left pinky and count 1, move up one segment, count two. Count each of the segments on your left fingers. You're now at 12. Move your right thumb to the first segment on your right pinky, and then start over on your left. Each time you count 12 on the left, move your right thumb up one. You can now count to 144 on your fingers.

God bless it I fucking love lemmy! 😄

Why hello there. It seems you have a type, and I am willing to assist. :p

Edit: my network is being just, like, absolute crap. I don't know why it posted multiple times. Such is the life of rural America, living with a 4g hotspot for home internet. Lol. Apologies!

I'm a sort of hodge podge of different traditions, philosophies and religions, and this is absolutely my view. In Hinduism, one of the reasons humans are at the "top" of the reincarnation cycle is because we have the intellect to understand things like karma, and are able to achieve liberation through that understanding. In my view, while we may be the only ones able to achieve liberation, we are also the only ones building up negative karma. It's a double edged sword. Animals, plants, bacteria, they don't do wrong things, they don't engage in wrong thinking. They act on impulse, on intuition, on instinct, and as such, they're pure spirited. Humans on the other hand are capable of evil, and as such we are the only species on earth that must struggle towards divinity. We just also happen to be the only species that can understand the nature of divinity. You don't think the universe be like it is but it do, y'know?

I absolutely love this! God, I need it. There are several websites I have to use for school that have bullshit articles on the side bar that I would love to block these assholes from. And for the people talking about blocking them being ignoring the problem, you don't have to keep it turned on all the time. Sometimes it would be nice to be able to scroll through something without having to know what the fuck warren buffet thinks, or how the emerald heir is going to cure cancer with the power of a truck that looks like a PS1 asset.

OP, I love this. Please tell me there's a way to do to this from Android?

Thankfully! One of the ex marines thought it wasn't important to bring a firestarter log (creosol log), "I ain't no pussy." Left it at the truck, without telling anyone. When we got there, it had snowed for so long, thick, wet snow, that we couldn't get a fire started. He was an idiot. Same marine, once we finally got the fire started on day 3 was on night watch. While we all slept he pulled a tarp over top of where the fire was to "trap the heat." Somehow, known only to God, it didn't catch fire when he FELL ASLEEP ON GUARD, but it did trap the smoke enough that we all woke up coughing. Thankfully we didn't all die of inhalation. The snow prevented us from making it to lost cove, and we ended up going home without seeing it. Horrible, cursed trip. Lol.

It was terrifying. Honestly one of the most scary moments of my life. I cried like a small child in front of a bunch of ex marines. Honestly, that whole trip was just cursed.

Adding onto this that Walmart and similarly large companies use what is effectively a planned economy (that rivals or exceeds the size of some actual nations). There is no need for the executives to be making these last minute decisions on stock placement or layoffs or any of the shit they supposedly do. If Walmart transitioned to be employee owned (not through stocks, but actually employee owned), it could maintain the same centralized planned economy nature (since it's almost entirely run through computers). It could benefit the workers directly, lift the economies of of the communities it existed within, and be an actual force for good in the world. All whole the actual products it sold would be much cheaper because they wouldn't be supported an ultrarich parasitical class.

But instead it benefits like 100 people, and the planet gets to burn in response. Yeah, no, it's not that we don't understand. It's that we do. These companies aren't just bad for their workers, they're bad for literally everybody.

I bought a different brand of this a few years ago, and despised it. It was super thin and the headphones would press into me painfully as I slept. Turns out it was just a cheap brand. Pulled the headphones out and put them inside a sleep mask I knitted myself. Absolutely in love with it now. So wonderful.

Checking in as a homeschooled gay communist. Also, one of my best friend's kid is 10, and being homeschooled. He's already a communist, and I am 98% sure he's gonna be coming out of the closet soon. Maybe this meme has it backwards. Haha.

Okay, been wondering this for a while, and can't think of where to post it. So... Gonna ask her.

Could lemmy do it's own version of Place? Like, a new instance specifically for lemmyplace, sole purpose being the big canvas (maybe c/canvas?), And it only stays up until it's done?

I'm still not entirely sure what kbin is. Is there a mobile app for it?

He wasn't even really a social democrat, to be honest. He bowed to the pressure of the socialist party at the time to prevent an actual fucking revolution (even if it would have been unsuccessful). Fdr understood that actual socialism would come knocking at the door if he didn't capitulate. Clearly the best president we've had (in economic terms) in the mostly modern era, but he wasn't as progress as people believe.

Edit

Also, tf is a "left" communist in this context? That's not generally a term used, and when it is, it's normally to point out the distinction between anarchists and Marxists, as in Lenin's "left-wing communism."

Is this chart claiming FDR was an anarcho-communist? Because... No. LMAO

How are we not great apes? I've taken 2 whole anthropology classes and this is the first I'm hearing of this! /s

For real, though, would love an answer. These things interest me.

Yeah, I'm one of those. If credit checks like that were instituted there is absolutely zero chance I could have enrolled. My bank wouldn't give me 500 dollars to get my transmission fixed, much less the tens of thousands I need for a bachelor's. The solution is the nationalization of education. Fuck this nonsense. Public education from K-post doc. Let the rich have their Harvards and whatever, but we need good state schools and a new crop of federal colleges popping up all over rhe country, in addition to community colleges. For free. No questions asked. Do you make absolutely no money whatsoever? Study here. Are you literally Jeff Bezos? Who cares. Study here.

We also need to get back to the way things were a century ago or more, where students could just decide they wanted to know a thing, and then go learn that thing. No need to declare a major, or even enroll for a degree. Just go learn the things you want to learn. Education should be it's own reward, even if we also need it for other things. I'm not saying do away with degrees, just make it possible for people to audit classes, or use the resources of their local, public, universities.

I would love to see drag queen strong person competitions. Imagine log rolling in heels and an evening gown?

Ooh, or maybe like that next ninja whatever show. I can't remember what it's called. The one with all the crazy acrobatics and stuff. Imagine having to do that obstacle course where you hang from the bar and "jump" while holding the bar to the next slot, but you have to sing And I Am Telling You while you do it!

American TV could get real fucking good, real fucking fast.

Imagine them having to apply makeup while running chainsaws? It'd put japanese games shows to shame!

I pronounce it "zhif" like the sound from zsa zsa Gabor's name. It irritates everyone equally, and gives me a happy.

Also, if you're familiar with the gnome/guh-nome debate on the Linux side of the playground, pronouncing it with a glottal stop at the beginning will give everyone around an immediate stroke.

Yeah, I know I can do it the other way around. I was just hoping to do it through Lemmy, since I've already followed just about everything I can think of on here. I was hoping for, like, one superfeed, with mastodon, peertube, Lemmy together.

No kill I!

In my rural county the cops, school busses and basically all the public service vehicles like ambulances and plows fill up at the farmer's coop, where farmers get cheap gas for their tractors. I have heard that this is not technically legal, because that has is specifically for tractors and has some kind of special price because of that, but I don't know if that's true or not. I know you're not allowed to fill up your regular car there, but some of the farmer's and cops do.

So, I don't really play much, tbh. But that's just me. I go through, like, phases where I play video games a lot for several weeks, and then don't touch a game for several months. What I can say is, with the exception of TOTK on switch, the only thing I use is the SD. It's the best game (or really, tech in general) purchase I've ever made. I'm poor as a MF, and I'd make that purchase over again if I had the option. Absolutely zero regrets. It's perfect, and I love that I have it when I want it.

We will get there, comrade. Socialism or barbarism.

I'll look around in settings and try to find that, thank you!

INSANE British guy claims to be king, goes FULL KAREN on the French, claims swallows carry coconuts!

My last job before my current one, I would routinely work 20 hour shifts, with 4 hours off, followed by a 20 hour shift. Normally would do that 4 days, followed by 4-5 normal 12 hour shifts with a 12 hour turn around.

Security jobs can really suck.

I like your method! I'm curious how to do binary? I only know the method I talked about because I really, really like base 12 for a story I wrote and got very into it with the research. I've never considered other techniques for finger counting before.

I found an abrupt chaos community, but I can't remember if it's active, and I don't know how to find this thread again if I go check. Lol.

Been on bitwarden for 3 years and same. Tried to log into an old account a week or two ago, and realized I hadn't added it to bitwarden. It was exhausting going through the forgot password bullshit and trying to remember old passwords and stuff. BW makes life better.

I've lived all over, moved a lot, and have never seen a set up like here before, either. But, I've also not paid super close attention to farmer's co-ops before moving here and getting chickens and ducks and doing small scale farming/big ass gardening. Lol. I assume they also sell diesel like you're talking about. Maybe they just got a deal with the county and I'm/other people here are confusing that for the red diesel thing?

Fair enough. The other great apes, elephants, dolphins and a few other species sort of blur the line between animal and people in some ways.

I'm a Lemmy newb, but what I've been doing is copying the instance address, and paste it into Jerboa if I'm mobile, or into a different tab where I'm logged into my instance on browser. It's not hard, but it worries me that people aren't going to understand it going forward. I'm hoping eventually it gets a little more integrated.

You wouldn't be able to link me to a tutorial to do that, would you? I'm not trying most technologically inclined, tbh.
