My uni used Ubuntu in the CompE computer labs; unfortunately all other labs were windows. But the introduction to Linux was certainly nice!

Near-infinite access to pretty much any information you can possibly dream of, content, questions, etc, on a little device in your pocket

Oh, of course. There are negatives to everything for sure. But I think as a whole it’s made life better in a lot of different ways.

Boatpilled sinkmaxxer got me

The solution to global warming, then, is clearly to just set up a massive ring of fans all pointed in the same direction in a ring around the North Pole, to keep the jet stream going

Doesn’t provide enough power for the cost of the cells, plus having to clean and upkeep them. And the more material you cover them with (to protect them; solar cells are INCREDIBLY fragile), the less efficient they are. I was on a solar car team in college and the cells are so fragile that to clean them, we had to use new microfiber cloths every time. Any dust would scratch and ruin them (which made it quite tough when I drove across the outback in the thing). We kept our cells completely uncovered because we needed maximum efficiency - but even with a super light carbon fiber solar car that’s got very minimal tire contact patches, specialized tires from Bridgestone, and a very aerodynamic shape (plus no amenities like A/C), I think our car could sustain something like 10-15 km/h on a perfectly sunny day in the middle of the outback. It just doesn’t add enough on a huge, heavy EV

Yes! The other comments are incorrect. This is a condition known as reversion. These trees are actually a mutation of a typical conifer, known aptly as a “dwarf conifer”. Mutations are oftentimes unstable, and can revert back to their original form - that’s what has happened to this tree. One of the branches (or multiple, potentially) have reverted and it’s actually growing a normal-size conifer on those branches now. Kinda neat! But can also be very bad for the tree.

More info can be found here: https://bygl.osu.edu/node/1602

Similar things can happen with variegation in leaves (reversion, that is).

Shitty k8s cluster/space heater?

What a world we live in where you need a /s on comments like this, lmao

Obviously you change your tires by cutting at the axle instead… rookie mistake.

After dating for six and a half years, that’s nuts!

…absolutely, positively, super false. I work in a sector where we’re constantly dealing with huge capacity enterprise SSDs - 15 and 30 terabytes at times. Always using RAID. It’s not even a question. Not only can you have controller malfunctions, but even though you’ve got what’s known as “over provisioning” on the SSDs, you still need to watch out for total disk failures!

Fun fact: you can’t lock your credit through Innovis if the name on your phone number isn’t the same as your real name (for instance, I’m on my mother’s phone plan - I still have my own number, but I guess it’s under her name). I ran into this issue literally four days ago :/

Carefully-calculated trace lengths and signal pathing have left the chat

ELI5 what does this mean for the average Linux user? I run a few Ubuntu 22.04 systems (yeah yeah, I know, canonical schmanonical) - but they aren’t bleeding edge, so they shouldn’t exhibit this vulnerability, right?

You definitely aren’t alone… maybe they should’ve spent even more money on marketing? Lol

Agh what the fuck guys. I had a months-long convo about when I ordered a custom kitchen knife from an awesome aussie I met on the platform. Thank goodness I remember his username on instagram because everything else is gone completely! Glad I moved to Lemmy.

Best regards, Albanian virus

I’ve tried out FreeCAD and it’s decent - but it’s really tough to get a hang of. Ondsel has a bit of a better interface imo and is based directly off of FreeCAD. Maybe give either of those a shot?

ELI5…?

My grandfather lives in the south, and for a number of years after Tesla became a big name, he genuinely thought it was “Tesler” because that’s just how everyone he knew was pronouncing it

Sue-dough & s-s-h here. Can’t speak to zsh yet, haven’t actually talked about it w/ others yet. How about /etc/? Sometimes I call it “e-t-c” but others I say “etsee”

GPU limiting and a general lack of either knowledge or wanting to put in the effort to do it themselves. Even just going into Github in the first place is enough of a barrier for a lot of people, unfortunately

I’m feeling pretty suasg about this, not gonna lie

On the Pentalobe screw front, albeit somewhat random, I do know that all Samsung SATA & SAS 2.5” SSDs use Pentalobe screws to hold them together. Unsure if there are other Samsung products that use them as well but I deal with their drives on a weekly basis.

Honestly, kinda glad that my win10 PC “doesn’t have the specs” to run win11. Stupid, because I’m running an 18-core Xeon w/ 128 gigs of ram and a 2070 super, but of course the stupid TPM chip. But oh well, guess I won’t be able to get ads on my own product.

The bummer is I’ll likely need to install it on something because I occasionally need to go back to windows to use certain programs… maybe someday wine will work well enough to actually use reliably…

Okay so this isn’t ever something I’d even consider - but I wonder what’s to stop someone from just putting a piece of paper (figuratively) over the bottom portion of the screen…?

That was a great read - depressing - but a great read nonetheless. We’re fucked…

I’ve got 3D pipes running on my spare Win10 machine :) fills me with nostalgia every time I see it, even still

Space, where they can’t influence things? They should be fine with their independent power grid, right?

Where is it? Give it to me now

Thank you! That makes much more sense.
