28, he/him. interested in all things tech, music production, and gaming. i write songs your girlfriend would probably listen to.

It has been said by many indie developers many times that purchasing games through key resellers is objectively more harmful for the developers than piracy entirely.

Key resellers tend to buy keys in bulk using credit cards. When the bank reports the card stolen, steam issues refunds. The developer of the game is responsible for these charge backs, not the storefront.

Basically, if you buy games from key resellers not only are you not giving developers money that they deserve, but you're literally taking it out of their pockets. Do not buy from key resellers, pirate instead.

Thought I'd throw my opinion into the ring here, since literally every comment is shitting on this.

Arc is a design project, that also happens to be a web browser. If you're just calling this "another chromium fork", I think you're completely missing the point of who this product is for. First of all, it's not for you.

Secondly, the design changes that arc is working on perfecting are pretty groundbreaking. The ability to customize the css and functionality of any web page without code and it saves your profiles for future use with a marketplace is super interesting to me. So much UI on modern websites is entirely unnecessary. As a designer, this is a dream.

Also, nobody is mentioning that their working on a Windows version THAT NATIVELY RUNS SWIFT ON WINDOWS. This is a big deal for future cross compatibility in general, why are so many people not looking at this?

Anyway that's my rant. Trying to voice my opinions even if they're the odd ones out to prevent a Lemmy based echo chamber. Feel free to disagree.

As long as the internet remains open, even if it's in our own private corner, then we'll always have a place to go, even if the place changes. If Google's "internet DRM" ever becomes a thing, we're completely fucked.

If there's a 14-year-old coding prodigy who can do something truly amazing in less than 24 hours, we need you now more than ever.

Anything that involves the mechanic "defeat all the enemies in this room in order to unlock the next room" is a huge turn off for me.

I love how this is almost laid out like a chart. Each row is a different category of things to work on as somebody with ADHD. The left half is what to try to do and the right half is what not to do. All we can do is keep trying.

I'm at the airport right now, about to leave for a week long vacation to Hawaii! I've never been before so it'll be a super fun way to celebrate my one year anniversary with my wife!

Sorry to hear about the rough times OP. From one human being to another, keep doing your best and know that there's another human somewhere hoping you are well. Cheers.

Always love me some N64. Unfortunately, it hasn't aged as well as some of the other retro consoles since the dips in framerate was pretty common for that machine even back when it was new. In comparison, the SNES still outputs a clean 60fps, as it was more of a priority back then.

I like the image. Did you create it yourself manually, or do you have a screenshot program that prepared this for you?

These last 24 hours have really just felt like a better reddit. I find content here now. I laugh at memes here now. I didn't know anybody on Reddit and this is just better.

I'm a big fan of taking old electroics, taking them apart, and then organizing them neatly in a frame, like this example.

If you are going to keep electronics however, I definitely recommend removing the battery and recycling it. Phones aren't fire hazards but batteries definitely are, especially the ones in the old iPods.

Please don't. I was there. Abusive parents, bullies for relatives, the whole 9 yards. I'm now 28 and I have everything I've always wanted. Keep going!

Iced milk. That's amazing. I'm stealing this.

I will consider, thank you!

Action sports games like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, 1080, Wave Race, Steep, and more. I mentioned Steep because it's the latest mainstream attempt but I feel like it never really found it's footing.

Sorry, but I'm not going to listen to anybody who actively and purposely registers a .zip TLD.

Hey @ChatGPT@lemmings.world, based on how the Fediverse works, can you write out a step by step guide on how to become the supreme overlord of the Fediverse? Be sure to include a step where I obtain a digital crown.

My GOD that is handsome.

In the mastodon search bar, enter the URL of the post/comment you want to reply to. It will show up in mastodon as a post once searched.

Note: if you're replying to a comment or thread, you must include the community you're posting in and the username you're replying to into your reply or else Lemmy will not nest the threads correctly.

Please, no.

It only pulls from communities you have subscribed to. Images aren't duplicated per server, just text; so even if you find something nasty it's not hosted by you and you can always delete comments from the database/block users from appearing in your instance.

I spent days trying to go from 0-100 figuring out the technical stuff and was making myself very stressed out and upset. I decided to just go to Yunohost and it just made things dead simple and in retrospect, enjoyable.

When I'm ready to learn I'll spin up a new server and try to implement the same services the "hard" way, but for now I'll continue to enjoy all the benefits of self hosted with a dead simple solution for implementing it. Don't let e-peens get you down.

Leave out the ' '

Let me know if you run into any problems! My goal is for this to be the go-to guide for beginners, so any mistakes at the beginning I'd love to buff out! Cheers.

Came here to say this

That's cool! I used to work in a bookstore but always felt like it was trying to put a price on reading. Library would feel a lot homier for me I feel. Thank you for what you do! If it weren't for Libraries as a kid I probably would have never fallen in love with reading.

Punk isn't a genre, it's a lifestyle. Somewhere in the 90s people, including the artists themselves, mistook it only as a musical genre.

The 1975 is punk imo, even though they dont fit the genre.

Oops didn't realize what community I was in, my b!

If OP is looking for FOSS I suggest Element for Matrix. You can screenshare on there as well.

So test! Such wow!

I've been running around Lemmy trying to get new people to use this. This script is awesome and saved me so much time.

If you're super new to all of this, check out Yunohost. You can either run it on Debian 11 or use their own OS image. Its a simple UI interface and makes apps deployable with one click. Doesn't support everything but I have this running beside my docker just because it's so dang easy to use and maintain.

Yes. Easy deploy deploys a Lemmy server just like all the other methods. Easy deploy is just easier.

I referenced Google domains because that's what a lot of people are currently using. I thought about not mentioning it but it doesn't really matter which registrar you're using at the end of the day.

I chose Debian 11 for stability and compatibility with other user friendly hosting options, such as Yuno Host. As far as I'm aware, Yuno does not currently support 12 yet. (I don't recommend installing Lemmy through YH as it's on an ancient version and doesn't support photo uploads nor phone apps)

You do not need to use a static IP with cloudflare as long as you use 'localhost' instead of 192.xxx.x.xx because cloudflared (the cloudflare tunnel software) runs on the server locally, and can detect changes in IP.

I'll probably add screenshots if I get a second request for them. Screenshots require performing the actions proper and I didn't have a test environment ready when I wrote this. Might make a video and add screenshots from that, we'll see.

I found your suggestions incredibly helpful! Thank you for taking the time to share them with me!

I knew you were going to say that! Mac OS always has all of the aesthetics! One can only hope we'll get "pretty" windows apps eventually. Although, Microsoft would have to unify their UI first, and we all know that will never happen.

I started on lemmy.world, then decided to learn self-hosting server infrastructure and made my own instance. Found a script that allows me to "auto-discover" all communities from given instance URLs, so I just added the instances that interest me. Boom, I have an instance with all of my favorite instances searchable and discoverable on "All".

For those interested in the script you can find it here. Do note that you should NOT use the default settings and make sure to use an instance whitelist, otherwise it'll pull every instance ever.

As a proud and loud member of the FOSS community, I will say this: The FOSS community is cringe as hell and people need to start going back to the root of the movement and remember that we are about CHOICE and FREEDOM.

If you're judging somebody for using the platform of their choice, FOSS or not, you are the problem.
