I was at first excited when he talked about Mars, but now that I know he can’t even run a social media platform I definitely wouldn’t wanna trust him with my life

Musk was only appealing to right wing idiots who think “freedom from social consequences” is a human right and co-opt “free speech”, making it a meaningless term

Yeah I agree, its user count is still growing on .world alone, and so fast in fact that I’m starting to consider making my sopuli alt my main account to not add to the load.

Good, other governments should be doing this. (But even if they use threads instead, mastodon users’ll see their updates anyway if mastodon feds with it)

Yeah, it’s not sustainable to just flock to one instance to the point of there being no real competition. Lemmy.world now hosts nearly 3 times as many user accounts as lemmy.ml- the second-largest instance and a much older one too, and has gotten big way too fast.

Reminds me of what the hoverboard craze of the mid-10s resulted in, products with a bunch of shoddily-assembled components that turn the batteries into bombs making it onto store shelves faster than the new thing powered by said batteries can get new safety guidelines released for it

I hated it, I only just barely put up with the toxic community so I could still visit my favorite subs only (I used apollo so I could ignore the garbage that’d be recommended to us constantly). I used the app-pocalypse as an excuse to leave. Now I only lurk there for the ooh-la-la subs, but as more and more creators there have lately been moving to lemmynsfw I might not even need those subs for much longer.

We should spread out across it, if the lemmy.world hack and the fact that its admins are even flirting with the idea of fedding with threads are any indication

Good. These growing pains are a sign that we’re gathering steam. Best part is, with alt accounts on other fedded sites we no longer have to do something else during downtime.

RTGame’s gonna have a field day

It’s somewhat harder to find friends on there, but once you do they’ll be quality over quantity. And besides, they even have a cool poll-based RPG account.

Because they can’t bear to touch grass for more than 2 days and can’t live without their power trip

Same, I originally used Memmy but it’s really buggy, and ever since the lemmy.world hack it’s completely forgotten all of my subscriptions and blocks- so no home feed, and I still have to scroll past communities I find unbearable and that one terminally online self-promo spammer on c/atheism who keeps polluting it with links to his rather angry blog posts.

Right pocket; I’m right handed

I don’t care, I left that site for a reason

It’s very similar to Apollo

Same, that often keeps me from finishing open world games

And lemmy.world’s c/atheism isn’t as big of a “religious people bad reee” circlejerk as r/atheism, it seems a lot more nuanced in its criticisms of religion and mostly takes the “love the non-forceful believer, hate the belief” approach. I really don’t want to see that change, the neckbearded assholes on its original reddit version are a big reason why we’re hated. I also appreciate lemmy.ml and lemmygrad being considered laughingstocks for their tankieness, as opposed to everyone who dares criticize them for that being downvoted to oblivion and screeched at by wealthy 13-year-old Americans who just discovered politics and think they’re communist just because they say “comrade” every 5 seconds, know 2 russian words (both of which are obscenities) and “bravely” blasted the soviet anthem in class and then crying on reddit about how they got bullied for telling that one kid of ukrainian descent about how their great-grandparents were time traveling slave owners who deserved it.

Instances are where the communities are hosted. Think of them like several different reddits with the subs spread out among them

As a 5’11 guy you’ve just made my day

I like the customizable LEDs on my razer mouse mat, except when my PC (2021 15.6-inch razer laptop) decides that since I just went 6 hours without installing what are now almost daily win10 patches, it’s time to fuck up my drivers- and then it exits sleep mode despite the lid being closed and there being nothing wrong with my power settings, causing my fans to jet-engine, the logo led thing to come on and the mouse mat to shine brighter than a sun with its default color-cycle thing. And for bonus points, sometimes it even tries to address the problem by actually auto-updating at the time I told it to (1 AM or something), so I get startled by the “du dun, duh dun doooooo” which always seems louder at night.

And I dare not switch to linux, as razer laptops are not a common laptop choice and therefore it’s unclear how I’d be able to keep all its complicated and already-buggy drivers and proprietary software up to date so they don’t make it overheat within the first week, especially since the odds of me finding any help online for converting such an exotic rig to ubuntu are minimal to none.

I remember always driving past one of those on the way home from school

Tankies are either:

  • Blue-haired white college kids from high-income families going through the commie phase that many go through due to academia’s fascination with at least the theory of it and the fact that such students start out spending most of what little free time they have online

  • The stereotypical basement-dwelling, probable-chomo neckbeards with BO who moderate large subreddits, unironically believe that work should be abolished and never socially matured past high school. Examples include Doreen Ford and awkwardtheturtle.

  • Edgy American 13-year-olds from high-income families who just discovered politics and chose (their idea of) communism over nazism and unironically stan Putin because they think he’s fighting something something gay/pronouns (which totally aren’t despised in Ukraine too)- as well as many other free and fair governments like North Korea and the Chinese Communist Party.

And sealioning is a type of internet trolling where you repeatedly make incessant, bad-faith attempts to “just have a debate” and then ignoring all responses unread.

And on that farm there was a fire, e-i-ei-o! With a burn burn here, burn burn there

The bishop from Proxima Centauri b:

Most of lemmy’s community mods thus far are just passionate pioneers who want to refound their favorite subreddits here and then invite people over and demote interested people to mod to make more entirely-new moderators, if the migrated subs are big ones, then odds are the actual mods for the originals are the powertripping, far-left and probable-chomo type who don’t wanna give up the powertrip they enjoy on reddit for a small refuge that nobody posts on in comparison.

That’s also my case, open-world games that are actually open-world. Mostly Minecraft. And I’ve tried FPS games, they’re too hard for me and I die too much in them. (And in most of them these days the “meta” changes every 3 milliseconds so strategy is impossible)

That, and online chess, though I have ADHD so I’m restricted to the really long time controls like 15 minutes with 10-second increment and therefore stand no chance against 90% of players I meet IRL and friend on chess.com since nobody wants to play anything longer than blitz these days and they always insist on 3 minutes unless I randomly challenge some complete stranger who often doesn’t even live in my home country. Of the many 3-minute “blitz” games I’ve embarrassed myself in, both online and IRL, only in like 5 did I last more than 15 moves, only in 3 did I not lose on time and and only in one did I actually win.
