Unfortunately not only is Reddit still chugging along, Lemmy is slowly losing users.

Growing new communities is very hard and takes a long time.

EDIT - Adding my source

I hate when articles headline with quotes like this. Unless these words are said by Jim Jordan or James Comer then it's literally not true. They're just gonna keep looking for evidence until they find something that'll stick. They're desperate to (A) make Trump's 2 impeachments seem like no big deal and (B) degrade Biden's reputation in the exact same way they did Hillary's.

The actual quote is from a Democrat, just FYI. That's how you know it's complete bullshit.

Agreed. This place ain't 100% the same but it's been a fine replacement and it will get better over time.

Climate change is only going to make this event harder and more dangerous in the future. I just hope the death toll stays at 1.

Don't rely on Silicon Valley to babysit your child. All software has flaws, and a kid who wants to watch more YouTube videos will figure out a way because there's probably a dozen videos out there detailing each bug.

V-Chips didn't do shit in my era, and we found ways around Bess, so none of this surprises me.

Linus really doesn’t respond well to criticism. He’s trying to act like a sale and an auction are 2 different things? If some hardware vendor tried to feed him that excuse he’d devote a whole video to it! Hell, if someone had sold one of his screwdriver prototypes he’d probably have thrown a fit and sued (as is his right)!

He’s picking quantity of videos over quality, so stuff like this is only going to accelerate.

Not that a new connector is around the corner, but I love how people try to act like this will be an achilles heel for these laws. How long will it take to vote in an amendment that updates the connector?

I get it, being anchored to one connection type sounds good now while it's still somewhat new, but in 10 years it could be a burden. Still, I do not want to go back to the days of every device having a unique barrel connector.

Key & Peele covered this pretty well

Ah yes, it’s “to fight spam” and not at all an attempt to cut costs of the free users.

Just keep squeezing Elon. Blood will come out of that stone soon enough I just know it!!

The issue is less about which browsers will roll this out and more about which websites will require it. How soon until we can't access banking information? Will filing taxes require this?

I'm still not convinced that the trial's even going to start tomorrow. Still waiting for some 11th hour hail-mary type play to push this back a few more weeks.

It’s only free because they’re trusting users to donate. That method of generating income for their developers could stop working at any time. Lots of FLOSS projects struggle to find kosher funding.

Somewhat related, you can use iknowwhatyoudownload.com to check and see if your IP address was part of a torrent download recently

Meta wants to federate with the whole fediverse eventually. This is first up, then Threads. Remains to be seen if they’ll bother with a Lemmy instance but I wouldn’t be shocked.

So far though the response by the fediverse has been “nah”.

We can’t even trust google to run a registrar!?

We need to take a page from the EU and force this stuff to happen by law. Expecting for-profit businesses to do anything they're not legally required to is simply naive.

Kinda miffed they didn't include a screenshot of the colors, but I'm guessing the readability will be vastly better!

I’m a little baffled by this one. File upload isn’t exactly some new HTML5.1 feature or anything. There’s no good reason they can’t have this handled properly.

I'll bet there's not going to be any lines this fall when I go to get this shot. Even by the 4th round during the pandemic I had no trouble making an appointment. Lots of people just decided COVID's over once they got any number of shots (1 in some cases).

Firefox wants to rely on donations but in reality 90% of their funding comes from an advertising company.

By “western society” do you mean the US? Because the EU doesn’t seem to have any qualms about regulating new technologies. That seems to be a uniquely American thing.

I'm willing to argue it's the sole reason Stadia failed. I never heard anything bad about the service from people who actually used it. It just never got enough users because Google can't be trusted anymore. Sundar has destroyed the brand.

I’m sure it will garner the kind of media frenzy that submarine with those 5 dudes did.

People only cared because (A) it was rich people laughing at god and (B) the mystery of the search.

Although this is actually three missing boats so maybe this will get a flurry of coverage. Not that I'm betting on it...

If she didn't know what she was signing up for then she deserves no pity. If she's smart she's using this as a stepping stone.

This is about the search engine, not the browser. Although I realize that’s a distinction without a difference.

Talk to anyone who works for a nonprofit. It’s really hard to find enough donors sometimes. You end up relying on a few really rich people because most of the community can only donate a couple bucks.

If every Firefox user donated $4 per year they’d be a billion dollar company and wouldn’t need Google’s deal

and what’s even worse, is that there’s nothing we can do about it

Look I know it's much easier said than done, but you can choose to walk away from IBM and Red Hat over this. If these changes start to lose money, they'll respond. Otherwise they'll see how much abuse their customers are willing to put up with and start doubling down.

Good bot

Trying to block a car with your body just seems so foolish. Who’s that going to work on except honest people who wouldn’t try running from the cops anyways?

Exactly! Most electronics are surprisingly low-powered, but USB-C can currently support 100W with a draft spec with upwards of 240W. We'll be fine for awhile.

Rather than try to take away ballot options that would better represent the interests of the American public, perhaps the Democratic Party should focus on passing legislation that would actually help struggling people such as a universal single payer healthcare program or guaranteed housing.

I love when people act like the Democrats have unilateral control over all 3 branches of Government and just gloss over how the party that controls the Courts dismantles Obamacare at every opportunity, and the same party that controls the House and will refuse to pass bills that even they like because of the chance it might make Biden look good.

Sadly, both major political parties in America are fully beholden to the corporate interests which fund the political system.

Of course, topping it off with a little "both sides".

Even in a company full of tech nerds you usually don't just hand out root access!
