I used to lurk like crazy on reddit. I had a nearly 12 year old account that mainly had a few comments here and there months apart, and only a few posts but ever since moving to Lemmy I've found myself actually posting relatively frequently to help build some of the smaller communities I'm in that have also migrated.

I haven't deleted my account just yet but I joined reddit 12 years ago this month, once RIF went under om the 1st I stopped visiting the site altogether. I have friends that still regularly use the site, mainly through old.reddit whom I've told about Lemmy but just aren't quite ready to switch over and that's their choice, due to the amount of content still on the site I can't necessarily blame them, but I just can't in good conscience give reddit the traffic now that they've gone full twitter in their corporate decision making.

RFK Jr. Is an openly Anti-Vax misinformation spreading conspiracy theorist who believes vaccines cause autism, regularly equates standard public health procedures to the damn Holocaust, pushed the use of Ivermectin for COVID in his book from 2021, and claimed that Chinese and Ashkenazi Jewish people were not affected by COVID because it was target white and black people. Regardless of his foreign intervention or environmental views, he's a propagandist nut case who's family openly shuns him. His father and uncle would be rolling in their graves if they could see who he turned out to be.

It's actually a set of a cabins in a reeeaally small town in western Missouri

I went to get chicken for some meal prep a couple of days ago (Missouri, US) and a 1lb container of just chicken breast tenders costs $13, I figured it was a "labor" cost for cutting the tenders off before the customer buys it, like how a container of diced onion costs an order of magnitude higher than just buying a whole onion, but nope, the pack of 2 breasts right next to it cost basically the same, maybe only 50 cents cheaper, and I wasn't in anything expensive like a whole foods, just a generic lowcost midwest regional store. It's absolutely ridiculous. Not to mention 2 orange or red bell peppers costs $5....

Yep, haven't been bitten by a single mosquito on my patio in nearly 3 years because of these little dudes.

I actually named it Bucolic as a nod to Windows XP! The original name of the Bliss wallpaper was "Bucolic Green Hills" before Microsoft bought it from the photographer.

Ah sorry, no deception intended lol just still getting used to lightroom for the time being.

Huh, that's odd but I think I may know where the discrepancy is coming from. When Charles originally took the photo in the '96 he licensed it out under the stockphoto company Westlight. Westlight was purchased by another photo company that was owned by Microsoft, Corbis in 1998. Technically Microsoft could have just licensed the photo as they now owned the company that owned the licensing, but chose to fully buy the rights directly from Charles so they could have unlimited use for it with all the branding for xp outside of just the default wallpaper.

The Yellowstone River Overlook in Hayden Valley, Yellowstone National Park, WY.

I've been in that area before so I can definitely see what you mean! This is at the La Cygne reservoir in Linn County, Kansas, the plant across the lake is the main power generation plant for Kansas City, MO and the lake itself is the artificial cooling reservoir for it. I always thought it was strange how beautiful the lake is even though it's only there to serve a big coal power plant. When I was growing up in the area back in the late 90s-early 2000s I would know we were getting close to home when I saw the old red and white smoke stacks across the lake,, they've since either been repainted or removed and replaced entirely though but old pictures on google show how it used to look back then. Took my girlfriend on a little road trip down there this summer to show her around and got this when we stopped for lunch in the county park/campground that's also there.

I think it may be the level of "film grain", as well as a bit of glow around the buildings in the sky, both are a bit too high admittedly, I honestly just liked the look of the shot with the added grain and I've just started getting into photo editing so I'm still not too great at it. I probably should've put some sort of disclaimer in the description that it was edited rather than an actual film photo. I do have some old 35mm point and shoots and even an early 80s ricoh SLR I just got, but haven't gotten to use them quite just yet, my first film roll is supposed to come in in a few days so I should hopefully have some actual scanned film photos coming in a couple months or so.

Thanks! Wish I could remember exactly where but it was taken while I was on the road with some friends last year, based on its position in the camera roll most likely along Highway 287 south of Ennis, MT.

Actually this was taken pretty late at the University Plaza Hotel in Springfield, MO. It looks a bit less liminal and backroomy during the day but with the lights lowered and no one around it looks really cool, this was around 11pm or so I think.

Price Chopper actually

That's the secret Cap, it is man made lol it's a small indoor stream at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

For those wondering, I just spoke to a good friend who also grew up in the same town and mentioned the traction this post got and he clarified that the roll is actually real, the holder is leftover from when the previous building burnt down decades ago but the property owners replace the roll on it every few years when it inevitibly decays and have been doing so for about 3 generations, hence why it was there when we were kids and still is now, it's just sort of a running joke/"urban legend" for the town.

Actually I'd only heard about it once before, I didn't realize that was what it was. I had figured initially that it was more of an alternative to imgur rather than instagram. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out!

I agree, I've previously dabbled around with adding grain digitally, if you look at my post history you'll see a picture from Las Vegas a few years back that I went waaay overboard with unfortunately, though at the time I'd been using Lightroom for only about a week or so. I definitely have room to improve but I've found using real film and then adjusting colors, contrast, etc. In post results in a much nicer picture, albeit quite a lot more expensive to produce lol

I believe it's actually Bush Honeysuckle but I'm not entirely certain.

Not at the moment, or if I do the account is so old I don't remember it lol

Actually it's at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Even I didn't notice it until I read this and now my disappointment in my own work is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

Inside Yellowstone National park, though I can't quite remember if the river running through this valley is the Madison or Yellowstone river.

Oh no I totally get that! I just meant when I'm going for an older feeling photo with a bit of nostalgia factor to it I've found that using real film gets the look that I'm going for better, I should've been more specific. It's all subjective really but I've also taken thousands of photos on different digital cameras and smartphones as well, they're objectively cheaper and more convenient for sure, but I don't think one is better or worse than the other.

Oh wow, thanks! I'm glad you like the photo, It's actually my home screen at the moment as well! Lol

And just like that I have a pixelfed account lol Thanks mate!

Oh wow, had no clue Lemmy had that layout as a feature as well, that might actually get a couple converts out of my friend group.

It is actually the Botanical Gardens! Near the bonsai trees. Loved the place.

Oh no you're totally fine! At the moment since I'm new to film photography I'm just starting off with some kodak gold 200 since it's fairly cheap by film standards, I'll likely just use that until I feel more comfortable shooting film then once I'm confident enough with the medium move up to some nicer fujifilm, maybe superia 400.

The film isn't quite that old but the camera is actually from 1981 lol

Thanks! I started out doing liminal space photography mainly, I've since branched out but I've tried to bring over the general feel from my earlier work into my newer photos as well.

Thanks! It was incredible in person, though a bit hazy due to the nearby wildfire smoke at the time this was taken in the summer of 2021. Made the farther reaches of the canyon hard to see, I think it's actually a bit clearer in this photo than I remember it looking person.

Thanks! I'm not sure if the image may be getting compressed by lemmy upon upload but this one should be 23 Megapixels, unfortunately I don't have a higher res version since 24MP is the max resolution of the camera I used.

Aha, being subscribed to my state's conservation magazine does come in handy lol

I'm not quite sure, I do know that it's in the area around here so it very well could be.

I can confirm that other than the contrast and saturation being tweaked slightly because I can't stand when the color temp feels off in my photos, it's completely unedited, it's up there, and has been since I moved to that town when I was about 6, idk if it helps as proof but here it is on google streetview lol

The odd thing about it, the building it's on is currently a financial investment broker, there's a small mural lower down at ground level on the wall with various 1800s politicians, and that roll has been there since I was a kid and has been there about 22 years at least, up until the investment broker moved in a few years ago, the building was abandoned, it was owned by a real estate mogul who owned most of the buildings on the square but moved several states away decades ago and left the properties to rot, he died a while back and his children sold the properties off so things started opening and the roll is just... still there lol I have no clue if it's art, if it's a joke, or if it's real and decades of the elements just petrified it or something, the rumor around town when I was in elementary school was the building previously in that spot (there's a parking lot below frame now) burned down but the toilet paper roll survived and will be there until the end of time.
