I have an Anbernic RG353M & it sounds like it fits your needs. Emulates up to PSP. Moddable: I run ArkOS which is Debian-based - so I can SSH in, apt install programs, run custom bash scripts I wrote, etc. I also ported a desktop game to run on it. So moddability points are high! Also dual-boots into Android, so Android games are available if that's your thing. It comes with the Android dual-boot right out of the box!

Downsides:

  • It can be a little small in my hands for long play sessions. I have a custom 3D printed handle extension which works great and solves this problem.
  • There's a hardware problem involving the 3.5mm audio jack output where chip noise gets in the audio. Annoying, but ignorable. Switching to Bluetooth headphones is a fine workaround too.
  • In long play sessions when the device gets hot horizontal bar artifacts show up on the screen. Like the audio thing, they are annoying but ignorable. When they show up I normally interpret it as a sign I've been playing too long and take a break while the device cools down.

Overall, it's got those hardware quirks above but I still like it and I don't regret it for the price (something like ~$100 a couple of years ago I think). Battery life is very good, even for graphics intensive games. It can go many hours without needing a charge, and generally it has better stamina than I do!

Nice try FBI

https://www.protondb.com/ is an excellent resource. Before you commit to Linux, look up your favorite games there to double check that they'll work.

My personal experience is basically all games work on Linux. To the point I don't even look games up on protondb before I buy. The exceptions seem to be multiplayer FPS games which use anti-cheat (but I don't play those kinds of games).

I don't like branding either. I keep a small piece of black electrical tape over the "G" on my Pixel phone so I can't see it.

I remove logos & tags from other stuff I own too. Isopropyl alcohol, acetone, seam rippers, & scissors are all friends.

This is fantastic! Gnome is such a great project! Well done!

This will sound silly, but I didn't realize that governments support open source like this. But it's such a good idea! It's similar to governments funding a park or a road any other public resource. Open source projects fit very nicely there!

VR tourism. Or even better: VR historical tourism!!!

No points, no battles, no level ups, no upgrades. Just exploring faraway or historical places.

I wonder whether Nukem would consider running again in 2024?

I used GrapheneOS until my phone got too old and GrapheneOS didn't support it anymore. Then I was forced to switch to LineageOS (or buy a new phone).

GrapheneOS is great, but the downside is it only runs on a small number of models.

I think it's not good manners to send video traffic through tor. They don't have a ton of bandwidth, so I've read the community asks people to find other ways to do high-bandwidth activities privately.

Wait... Processing....

So... a lamp in a video game is also a lamp in real life?

"Sure, it is not perfect. But, sometimes it is incredibly helpful. No matter what you do with it, unfortunately, it is not an open-source solution."

This article needed a better ai to write it .

A coworker recently sent me a Word document with edits and comments they had added. When I downloaded & opened it (in Word on Windows!) it told me that it had the edits/comments but it wouldn't let me see them unless I log in to my Microsoft account and then view it online in the web version of Word. What the actual fuck?

Fuck that. I responded to my coworker and asked them to just send me the edits via email in plain text. I'm not winning popularity contests at work, but what the fuck Microsoft?

The Lord of the Rings extended trilogy. It's so long it feels more like a modern miniseries than individual movies.

Very good suggestion. Alternativeto.net is a great resource that I return to often. Eased the transition greatly when I originally left the "mainstream apps".

...and we can be sure Amazon finds ways to monetize user data as well (they see your book purchases, downloads, reading habits, etc)

I sneak up behind her and give her "tiger rubs", which is aggressive up & down motion on the ribs & side meat.

Lububtu is another lightweight distro for old devices. I've used it before on very old devices and it's great!

I've known two people who are extremely quiet and shy sober but become loud, social, and "larger than life" when they drink. Like a massive personality change.

Always wondered whether their drunk selves were closer to their "true" selves, but they suppress it in daily life?

Conservatives are more likely to follow college sports, while liberals are more likely to follow professional sports.

Why? Beats me.

Edit: I read this in a study once. Might be this one. Also, I'm reminded that basketball fans are more likely to be liberal as well.

You're being a wet blanket.

Unpopular opinion: home automation is overblown. Except for the disabled or edge cases the convenience these solutions add are comparable to the inconvenience they bring (added expensive, harder to maintain, repair, replace, etc).

I'll get out of bed to turn off the lights.

Agreed, and let me add John McCain. He epitomized the grown up, think-for-yourself Republican. I miss that.

I really like 1440 news which is a news aggregation/curation service. They try to be politically unbiased, and they send you an email each morning with the news from yesterday (sort of like a print newspaper).

I also read allsides.com sometimes, which is another unbiased aggregator service.

I still try to boycott Amazon, for a myriad of reasons. I don't think you're stupid for doing it!

I don't have a good response here. My existing case is transparent, so I could easily put some art in there. I guess I just didn't think of it! Thanks for the suggestion!

I use Bats! for a HIIT timer & Loops Habit Tracker to keep myself honest. Both are available on F-Droid.

Yup, power supplies and batteries are also usually the first components to die. All the more reason to avoid cheap ones.

Dude, Turbo Killer DID get turned into a movie!! Carpenter Brut & Seth Ickerman did a ~30 min followup to Turbo Killer called Blood Machines. The plot and acting are awful. But the aesthetics are really good.
