The moment I start seeing Meta content here is the moment I leave. People are being very, VERY naive in thinking that the Fediverse is immune to corporate interest. Judging by the Mastodon response, we are already seeing that it's not.

I work with online sales and that's not what happens at all. Fake discounts just works, sadly, and people just won't learn. I don't really know why, maybe they use the "discount" as an excuse to themselves just to buy more stuff.

Very true. I have an example in my family: my father-in-law owns a lot of land. That land, not so long ago, belonged to some native tribes that were all killed to have said land stolen. My wife said that, when her father dies and she inherits the land/money, she's gonna donate most of it (maybe all, depending on our financial situation), because she doesn't want the blood money.

Holy shit, the nostalgia. Time flies and I'm almost having an existencial crisis after seeing this meme again.

"Freedom" can be used to justify lots of really bad stuff. Meta has too much money to be trusted, they WILL fuck the Fediverse up eventually for more profit on the first chance they get (and people with lots of money always get those chances).

And it's not just about morality and the fucked up stuff that's happened on Meta, Iike the Cambridge Analytica scandal. I stopped using Facebook years ago because of the low quality of the content being posted there. And last week I logged back in to sell some stuff and oh boy, the content managed to get even worse.

I don't want growth just for the sake of growth. We don't need big corporations getting involved.
