It was able to get an IP, and I was able to get smb access, but for some reason still won't allow me to open a web browser and browse, or pull windows updates.

I may have to play around with what is allowed through UFW a bit yet.

Completely unrelated, but on my Wireguard/PiHole server I setup this weekend I did get a bit more familiarized with UFW and how that works a bit better. So with that fresh new experience for me I think I may have a few ideas on how to accomplish this.

And thank you again!

I will check again later tonight when I am back to my desktop.

Though I think another project I am going to do is instead of using a qcow2 image for my windows installation I am going to experiment with using a dedicated SSD for my windows installl to keep it out of my BTRFS snapshots, and hopefully have a bit better performance. As well as I might install my second GPU for GPU passthrough.

Fixed:

Installed inotify-tools then restarted grub-btrfsd.service once again

"Verizon agrees that the FCC should consider the merits and trade-offs of handset unlocking requirements," Verizon spokesperson Rich Young told The Register, though that support is conditional.

Screw verizon with an acid covered cactus. What possible "merits" are there to locking a device down for anyone but the companies selling the phones? Rich Young can go kick rocks.

I will not buy a phone through a carrier, I will not buy a phone with a locked bootloader. Period.

I am done with anticonsumer bullshit.

I did allow TCP/UDP for ports 53, which didn't seem to work, and 67 and 68. I can get some network connectivity but not fully.

https://github.com/Linux-on-droid/lindroid-rootfs

In this specific github entry it mentions flashing, and with my setup, I would prefer not to flash something onto my phone without some sort of backup.

Unless there is a userland app I can install that I seem to be missing.

I can see two sides to this:

Removable batteries are great, if you want longevity for a phone, and don't mind sacrificing water resistance.

On the other side of the coin:

Removable batteries have more potential to lower water resistance ratings.

I think more manufacturers should give the choice of a model with a removable battery.

This interests me greatly. I would like to try this on a device, but I don't have an extra I can spare to do so.

I have seen the likes of similar, like Andronix but I typically don't want to buy into proprietary software where possible. Thank you for sharing!

You should go another level deeper, VirtualBox > Windows > WSL > Waydroid > Lindroid

Thank you for the suggestion. I will for sure give this a shot later tonight when I am able to access my home desktop.

All good!

I am by no means top at anything I do with a computer, but I do find it said that I tend to know more than almost anyone I interact with in real life when it comes to using computers.

For the most part the way I became proficient with a computer has come down to reading comprehension. I would like to see studies showing the overlap of computer proficiency, and reading comprehension.

And here I am with a 3090 having more issues than I have time for wishing I went with an AMD card. Sadly we both can see grass ain't necessarily greener.

Just disable the driver for touch input

There should be protocols and practices in place to stop our data from being owned and sold. Hence why I take the steps I do to help anonymize myself to a small degree. Ditch Facebook, ditch apple, ditch google, ditch Microsoft, ditch any provider that wants to claim your data that tou can to minimize this sort of behavior.

The fact that you keep the spirit of linux here by making it available to all is beautiful. I will definitely take a look!

I personally wouldn't use Manjaro, especially if you plan to use anything from the AUR.

Ubuntu: It's not a lack of features that pushed me away; it's more about the way things are going. I am not a fan of snap packages. I have run into odd issues trying to use them. I used Ubuntu server for my Dell Poweredge and I shut it down until I can find a suitable replacement. I struggled with it respecting my DNS settings which in turn killed my reverse proxy setup.

Manjaro: While I love Arch and some of its derivatives, I can't stand by Manjaro. I thought it would have been a good OS to use since I was familiar with Arch, but it had enough dependency issues where updates broke them. Funny enough, never have I had a dependency issue with just plain old Arch.

I use Arch btw. But besides the meme on it, I legitimately eo use arch and couldn't be happier.

I won't be going to theaters to see this movie. It feels forced, and the cast doesn't inspire confidence that it's going to be good.

I'm on stable, and using it.

Haven't investigated what data they may or may not be taking but they were acquired by Branch (https://novalauncher.com/branch) and with that being said, use your judgement to decide if a company like branch is one you'd want to have data of yours.

Branch is an analytics company, so I would argue that yes, yes they are obtaining your data.

I have found in my years of experience in IT, the best way I can handle an issue/error that a user may face is to work through it with them, verbally tell them what I am doing to fix it while showing them. Another trick from my repertoire is to try to relate to their frustration, or their problem, so they don't feel talked down to.

You are right, the humanities are important.

And it can be about how things are framed and communicated.

Without going into details on why you rank each distro the way you did, its just useless and baseless... Not helpful to anyone, at all, for any reason. Am I going to consult it for my next project? Absolutely not. I implore folks to do their own research and testing for their use case.

The worst part, is a good chunk of those people don't retain or comprehend what they read either.

As MajorHavoc said, there are ways. I do in fact use GrapheneOS, have access to a reasonably secure VPN, I use Firefox as well as Vanadium, within Firefox I use Ublock Origin and a few other tools. Some argue that having as many layers of "protection" is counterintuitive because it makes your fingerprint on the web more unique.

Single handedly that is how I have acquired any of the computer knowledge I have. So it is absolutely mind blowing that people just can't seem to grasp the fact that most of the time what it takes to understand something, is reading. That being said, beyond that, breaking through to new discoveries; it makes me appreciate those with an inquisitive mind that tend to push the envelope beyond what is well understood and well documented.

What don't you like about Android Auto? What alternative would you use to interface with a vehicle head unit if you didn't AA?

I would highly recommend against Manjaro... While Manjaro is Arch based, I would recommend against using AUR packages with Manjaro even though it is Arch based. Getting packages from AUR often times ends up breaking Manjaro. Dependencies conflicting when using AUR with Manjaro is one of the biggest reasons I would avoid it.

NTFS will give you issues just like exfat. You can partition it as multiple partitions. 1 ntfs, 1 ext4. Or I personally for Linux have been using btrfs.

There is a btrfs driver for windows, but I don't know much about ita use cases.

Been using Arch with KDE on my Lenovo Yoga, both Wayland and X11 depending 9n what I want to accomplish. Though it lead me down the rabbit hole of Weston so that I could run Waydroid from within X11. Ultimately I just decided Wayland basically when I am not using my touchpad or when I want to run Waydroid.

Year of the Linux desktop, LFG!

I'm going to echo the same sentiment: pixel phones.

Why would I suggest them?

Multiple reasons.

First and foremost (for me) is GrapheneOS. Pixel phones are of the few if not only (don't have source handy) that allow you to relock the bootloader. From my reading the security chips that pixel phones use are quite robust. Pixels are readily available, and the more people that use them the more support a device typically had. GrapheneOS is enough reason for me, but may not be for everyone.

I have also used LineageOS on my phone as well, but with the recent stuff that went down with Play Integrity Fix, LSposed, and I believe a few more projects aimed at rooted phones, I can't rightfully stick with a rooted custom ROM.

Not only do I like the software support, I would personally say that my Pixel 7 Pro is my favorite android device I have owned.

Please elaborate on how this is "ironic"

By offering this as a bonus doesn't take away the offline installers and DRM Free content you buy from them.

It isn't being forced, and it isn't costing extra, so what's the issue?

That aspect of tech support often burns me out. However, put a complex computer related problem in front of me, and I could find myself at it for as many hours as I can be awake without burnout.

You're right. I get hit with the "you don't know which year" phrases. But when I ask further probing questions as to why I should know those things, I get hit with the "well I learned this in X year of school." and they fail to explain the importance. People often equate memorization with being intelligent and real world examples point to this absolutely not being the case.

I oddly find technical documentation of things and informational pieces to be far more interesting.

And might I add, well put!

The problem is that I don't use an fdroid client whatsoever. I use Obtanium. So as far as my search has taken me, the fdroid link is the only one with APKs built that Obtanium can use.

I appreciate the compliment. However, there are plenty of people who are more knowledgeable than I am when it comes to the grand topic of computers and technology.

On my 7 Pro, Android Auto worked great. Since flashing GrapheneOS on my Pixel 8 I have had no such luck.

I think it's a mix of all of these things.

Being able to read isn't quite equivalent to reading comprehension though. So between that, and lack of curiosity, laziness, defeatism, and more; it really does stunt the population when it comes to computer knowledge.

It's not FOSS but I used Textra for years and it's quite great. I don't think it supports bubbles, but it's worth checking out
