Yeah, I still occasionally call it Youtube Red. There's only 2 subscription streaming services I don't feel weird at all about paying for and that's YouTube and Dropout.

Embrace tradition. Time to bring back phpbb into the mainstream.

I switched all my server stuff to my m1 Mac mini because previously I was trying to host everything off my truenas scale NAS with truecharts. Since truecharts isn’t really an option for future truenas updates and I already had an m1 Mac mini I bought secondhand, I figured it’d work pretty well for docker containers, which it does. And it’s a ton more easy for me to troubleshoot than K8s.

This isn’t nearly subtle enough to be funny. Just call a doner a gyro and call a gyro a doner.

Off camera, there's a lawn mower driving as fast as it can away from the approaching tram

And when you finally find some helpful forum with content from 15 years ago, you’ll have someone be like “GUYS I FIGURED IT OUT! Here’s a [broken] link to someone else who solved it” with a dozen or so “Thanks, that solved the issue immediately for me!” Comments after it.

Haven’t seen this mentioned, but Meta hired marketing consultants to present to the government how dangerous TikTok was just so their Facebook/IG reels or whatever they are called can take their place. This spawned a ton of news articles and opinion pieces about the government talking about this new dangerous TikTok thing and how bad it is. Also, it was very clear that an anti TikTok campaign was happening on Reddit like a year ago, so the marketing didn’t stop with presenting things to the government.

And I’m not saying it isn’t a breach of privacy. I also use Google maps too, so I’m not too terribly concerned with it. But it does just seem like a marketing smear campaign centralized around the facade of xenophobia and “think of the children”

I think the issue with this question is the fact that you asked it on a decentralized platform. If you asked this same thing on a centralized social media platform, you’ll definitely get far more pro-Facebook and anti-TikTok comments and less “uh…both are bad CHECK PLEASE”

Santa's the one buying all the personal information because he has to update the naughty list

I used to work for a company that pushed a lot of TikTok content- most of it is filmed on a phone, then the footage is sent to an editorial team to edit on a computer, then sent to marketing to post on their dedicated socials phone (and oftentimes a great deal of effort is made into making it look like it was all shot, edited, and uploaded from one device to look more “genuine”). It’s very likely that if someone tracked the location of the account that posted White House content, it would never move out of a single office. Exporting a compressed video, as far as I’m aware, strips the original metadata from the device- and if not, there are definitely ways to strip metadata in the post production process.

Some people's lives are so bad they would rather focus on personal survival than electing the good cop over the bad cop, both of whom would likely make their lives either a little or a lot worse every single year. "Our country is at stake" only really matters if you have systemic benefits from this country- otherwise, it just seems like it's a plea for victims of this country to take your comfort into consideration above anything else. Sure, we're on the precipice of a fascist takeover where even the white people in gated neighborhoods could start feeling even fractionally as bad as people of color currently do, but it might be worth considering this perspective isn't just some petty or ignorant thing- it's a rotten system created by racist white men that might not be worth participating in because even if the system is perfectly fixed, there will always be people on top and people on the bottom. At least with Kamala, there is a hope of traveling farther away from that "racist white man who begs me for votes and never delivers on promises" trope, so it doesn't surprise me one bit.

No second helpings until everyone has grabbed a plate policy.

If I was a fae creature, I'd get the endless candle so I could lure people to my hut in the forest and they would not get a sense of danger at all (assuming everyone around the candle can also feel the effects by smelling it)

This is definitely AI. And kinda old AI at that. The backgrounds are nondescript, the facial hair is ambiguous, the face looks like one of those "upload a photo to see it realistically move with the magic of AI", the shirt looks airbrushed and ambiguous, he has dark eyes instead of very blue eyes like in real life, and if you try to look up pictures of any interviews of him in those particular years, he usually has facial hair and a button down, sometimes with a jacket.

Compare the upper right and lower left picture on this post with this similar meme. Film grain is missing (possibly due to AI "beauty filters"?) and how the upper right image, his eyes are way more blue. I think the original meme creator probably wanted to make it look like all 4 pictures were the same gray shirt rather than 4 different gray shirts since the bottom left shirt in the picture I posted is heathered gray instead of flat gray.

The fact that the pillow won't help my awful insomnia (or help you fall asleep in general) makes it so close to being the best choice to me, but it falls short in the most frustrating way.

Bad cop vs Good cop vs burn the precinct down and protect your own neighborhood.

Finally, I can pop this bottle of Veuve I bought in 2018!

God I love Derry Girls. It's about time for a rewatch

Everyone knows the true test of a person's character is the consistency of their grinder, not the brewer. (please don't look on my kitchen countertop- it's full of almost all of these and a single hand grinder. My forearm is crying for help)

Half joking response- but wouldn’t the survivorship bias mean those who were surviving only on minimum wage alone didn’t survive for very long?

What a terrible time for me to try to tell friends about how cool Gemini is

Yikes. I'd rather get arrested than hold that banner

What, are liberals not willing to fight (physically) to get their democracy back from a dictatorship?

Gotta go buy some gender fluid to top off my continuously variable trans mission.

If transportation is necessary, find ways to mitigate emissions as best as possible. If emissions are unavoidable, use the thing with least emissions (small-tired lightweight vehicles) until you research a solution to a tire material that isn’t harmful (which is being worked on I think). Busses mitigate a dozen or two cars. Local rail mitigates a few busses and a few hundred cars. Essentially, personal vehicles should be small and lightweight, and essential mass transit or city services should be large enough to serve an entire area.

Just put on a red hat and you'll be fine.

The whigs (conservative but more left relatively) and the democrats (conservative but more right relatively) back in the day were facing a similar moral issue. The whigs refused to answer the question of "what do we do about slavery" and a ton of whig and anti-slavery voters formed their own party (Lincoln's republicans) because they didn't want slavery anymore. This is how 3rd parties win- by another party dying. As far as I'm concerned, both republicans and democrats need to be replaced with something more representative, but if I were to make a guess, the Democratic Party will be the first to die.

Or maybe if the average American stood with the marginalized instead of yelling at them to fall in line, we wouldn't constantly have issues where the marginalized are systemically murdered and imprisoned. The blood isn't on their hands for having morals and boundaries. It's on the masses who refuse to give up even an ounce of comfort to lend a hand to the downtrodden. The path the democrats are on is the same path the current republicans have walked before.

Who are you willing to sacrifice for your own comfort? Why is that a valid position? Because the other guy points that same weapon at you instead and it's scary? How many different groups are you willing to put on that sacrifice list until you just turn into a fascist republican? "Just following orders" is just as cowardly a response as "It was my only choice".

But in the comparison of tailpipe emissions (0.02 mg/km) vs tire emissions (36mg/km), I know which one I’m more worried about.

Nick Molden of Emissions Analytics seems to think that the heavier the vehicle, the worse the wear on tires seems to be (though it greatly depends on driving style and torque). That’d probably mean heavy EVs and SUVs are the worst for this.

Not that bicycles are completely clean- but there’s probably a time in the future to worry about bicycle microplastics- after the cars have been phased out.

Someone is begging for his house to get peed on.

Breathing in Micro-rubber/micro-plastics from disintegrating car tires isn’t fixed at all by electrification.

I can also hear ICE cars approach from behind when I’m cycling, but that isn’t the case with electric vehicles (which might be using “autopilot” and can’t see me on the road). I’m not sure if that whirring sound is present outside of low speeds, but I certainly can’t hear it with wind crossing my ears. Sometimes tire noise is audible, but not always.

On the other hand, ICE drivers are more likely to intentionally try to hit me soooo

Apple has a masterclass of tiering their products in just a way so that in every tier but the upper tiers, you're giving up something really important. If you spend the least you possibly can on a MacBook, apple guarantees you're going to have a very bad time for "doing the bare minimum to be seen with a laptop with an apple logo on it". Their whole tier system is an exercise in "how can we get away with fucking up these things just enough so the customer feels like it is necessary to spend a little bit more" every step of the way. Then they make it unupgradable so you can't sidestep their crafted feature tier system.

Though, maybe he should be dialing back the "let's murder all Roma people" jokes.

Don't have compete with BYD if you don't allow them to be competition in the US.

A company I used to work for (digital advertising) would buy fake Facebook likes and followers and it seemed to work well for them with regards to getting a ton of investors. That is, until Facebook made changes that pretty much stopped all profit from the platform.

lol imagine driving fast in DC and not being stuck in traffic.

I’m also not sure how relevant my experience is to this whole thing since my work experience is 100% contract work in a specialized field instead of salaried or employer scheduled. From my perspective everything is becoming gig work, but that might not be the case. I think it’s hard to budget for groceries getting more expensive if one year I make 85k and the year after, I make 25k. Employers just don’t seem to have as much money to spend on advertising as they used to, so finding work is hard unless you take less than what you’re used to taking.

All my peers seem to be having issues with finances nowadays unless their parents are helping them out or have a partner making quite a bit as well. Combine that with businesses forcing the end of work from home means we have to move back to expensive cities. It’s looking pretty bleak even from my pretty privileged vantage point.

I’d give a Gould if I could.

It's not like they're arming queer people.

Looking at the Realtime Inequality source, I think the picture is a bit less rosy than the article gives it, if I’m reading the graphs correctly. It looks like the bottom 50% were absolutely financially destroyed during 2020 (as was everyone else) and measures have been taken to place them relatively close to where they were before the pandemic. But the upper class not only didn’t fall as hard as the bottom 50%, but they recovered to a higher level than they were previous.

To me, this seems like “the income inequality train is slowing down” rather than “the income inequality train is going in reverse”. That being said, I’m a dummy when it comes to economics, so I might not know how to read this correctly.
