Just a guy on the internet, totally a human and not an alien, if that's what you were wondering.

Blasting music/videos on their shitty phone speaker in public. If you really don't have headphones, at least turn it down or hold the speaker closer to your ear so you're not just annoying everyone in a 10-meter radius.

One of the coolest experiences of my life was flying back to Portland from Chicago at night. Somewhere along the way, I looked out the window and off in the distance I noticed a lightning storm over a town. It was surreal how much lower the storm was than we were flying, and watching the lightning bolts branch out from the clouds to spread all over the place was just incredible.

I don't fly often, so maybe that's more common than I realize, but I thought it was pretty awesome.

Just do a small fraction of what needs to be done. If I commit 1-2 minutes to the task I'll likely do more once I actually get going.

"Kid, don't you want to work hard and be able to retire in a nice beach house like mine?"

"But your house is isn't on a beach..."

"By the time you retire, it will be. And it'll be worth so much then."

There's are databases for Unclaimed Property online that might have money you didn't know you were supposed to get. Searching for 'your state + unclaimed property' should return a .gov website for it. (disclaimer: I only know this is a thing in the USA)

Alt-text descriptions should clearly convey both the content and the meaning of the image, and should aim to use as few words as needed. Describe what's essential to understanding (and enjoying!) the intent of the posted photo — you don't need to add in a sentence for every visual element, but should include as much as you need to create an accurate portrayal of the image. Cut out unnecessary words and combine separate sentences as much as possible. One to two sentences is usually more than enough room to describe what's going on.

As mentioned before, these photos convey information to the people scrolling your page, even if you are just posting them to brighten up your feed. They have a purpose, and for that reason, alt text should focus more on the image's meaning than its aesthetics. This means you're not focused only on what the object in the photo looks like, but what it is and why it was posted.

I was hoping to see a format that people can easily follow and just fill in the blanks, but I suppose this is the gist of it: Describe the main purpose of the photo succinctly rather than each and every individual thing you can see.

"Socialism bad. Biden doing socialism = Biden bad"

Of course, this only makes sense if the people you're speaking to all agree that helping our nation's citizens in any way is a bad thing

I feel like this is the only answer that would make a difference long-term.

The other suggestions like giving people food and housing would only be putting a bandaid on a broken system; it needs to actually change to prevent the same situations from reoccurring.

Climate change, and the associated realization that if I ever have children they will live in a world even more inhospitable than I grew up with.

Imo blocked users get less engagement, therefore it helps to some degree. Also, unlike reddit, it's somewhat difficult to browse the Fediverse without being logged in. I'd guess that if any problematic content does slip through, it reaches a much smaller audience than if it were to slip through on reddit just because of how things are decentralized here.

edit: I tried it again and I now agree that it is easier to browse with an account. I saw a lot more content than the first time I tried it ~2 months ago

What kind of psycho gets a knuckle tat on the inside of their knuckles?

It almost feels like extortion to me. Don't wanna pay for youtube? Fine, you get ads. All. The. Time.

Imo it feels like the reddit migration has died down, but a good chunk the users that have stuck around are actually engaged in their communities. I've been seeing more instances created too, which is cool because it means people are hosting their own.

More recently I've noticed that Sync actually plays embedded videos now, which is probably the best update since its release. It's feeling a lot more user-friendly and that should help it keep growing organically.

The only times I use reddit anymore is browsing with old.reddit a couple times a week. I don't even login to that site now because I don't engage with anything, I just check the news and stuff then come back to Lemmy.

Most satisfying comment in the thread. A true "fuck around and find out" story

That nobody else used.

Narrator: "And it should have stayed that way, but unfortunately, fate had other plans for poor u/southsamurai."

It must be Big Microwave astroturfing again

This is effectively making him pay for it, quite literally, for the rest of his life. Imo that sounds like a more severe punishment than if he were actually rich enough to pay all at once and just end it early.

Coincidentally, I know someone who recently applied for a regular teacher's assistant role and when they got to the interview the hiring director didn't even ask questions about that position; instead they interviewed for a special ed job and then only offered that. It was a total bait & switch to try and fill a role nobody was applying for.

Highschool money making hack: Take note of the vending machines and what they sell. Figure out what they don't have that people want, then buy it in bulk at the store to sell at school for profit.

At my school they didn't allow soda in the vending machines, so I made bank selling cans of Coca-Cola and Mountain Dew out of my locker for $1-2 each. I remember earning enough to buy an iPod and that was pretty much all I was doing it for.

Hot Rod, Step Brothers, and Tropic Thunder are a few. I love Tucker & Dale vs Evil too

You're supposed to be looking for your kidnapped son, but that's kinda hard in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Might as well just do whatever you want and hopefully run into him ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In case you didn't know, PoppinKream is here on the Fediverse now. That's a good sign that more well-known users could migrate here

That Amy has gotta be at least 3 ½ courics by my estimate

Probably how we went to the moon and then later successfully sent a rover to Mars to study and take pictures. It's something I can't really explain on a technical level but it happened

I got to stage dive at a packed concert, like 4 times. There were a bunch of other people doing it and it seemed like the band playing was even encouraging people to, so I just had to squeeze my way to the front of the crowd and climb up on stage to try it myself. It was just as much fun as I imagined. The other people there were really cool about it too and helped jumpers get caught/let down safely

Your comment has been awarded one Lemmy Gold: 🏅

I prefer to call it Friday's Eve

I lost track of how many times I tried to block advertising accounts on there, but eventually gave up because blocking them just doesn't fucking work. So glad to be done with that rotten platform now

In a past thread on this topic, I've seen a few indie artists say that they benefit because Spotify amplifies their audience. They make crap on the streams, but a larger audience base is worth the trade-off since they'll be able to sell more concert tickets and merchandise.

I'd recommend the movie Akira (1988). It's pretty much a classic from the era of early anime, extremely detailed animation and official English dub.

That they weren't going down to see the Titanic at all. They were really out searching for Atlantis and got caught in a battle with Namor, who obviously crushed their submarine like a soda can.

Wait you built it? With like a kit or from scratch?

I wouldn't say 'most jobs', but a lot of jobs don't actually care about diplomas.

  • The customer service jobs I've had typically only had a short 'can you do basic math?' type quiz beforehand just to see if I could operate a cash register.

  • My warehouse jobs just had simple safety training and subsequent quizzes.

  • Restaurant work only requires a food-handler's card.

In my experience, entry-level jobs care more about you having a reliable form of transportation + flexible schedule than if you passed high school.

I've actually noticed that too. It's odd that anyone would go to/sub to a community for cat pics and just downvote whole threads of comments regularly.

When I see it happen I like to throw a few upvotes to balance the scales again.

Dry goods that don't need to be prepared. Things like crackers and beef jerky are reliable choices.

Look at modern-day MacGyver over here, actually finding a use for old gen electronics.

jk that's really cool tbh, especially utilizing the cameras from old phones.

It's great. I get all of the access to the Fediverse without really any of the connectivity issues I experienced on my lemmy.world account

You be Corn, and I'll be Uni. Together we can join forces to become.... Corn-Uni

Out of all the most prominent streaming services, Hulu has the most content I'd actually watch. Unfortunately, they still show ads in their cheaper paid subscription, which is a deal-breaker for me.
