A doordash driver gets cornered by a large 6 foot 5 man who aggressively shoves a phone in his ear repeatedly calling them a dipshit who thinks about their "twinkle", tries to get away but is followed, explicitly asks the man to leave him alone 3 times but is ignored, and tries to brush the phone away? Yeah that sounds like a situation a reasonable person might fear for their life in, and before anyone goes "well why didn't they use a less lethal self defense method?", the prankster is 6 foot 5 and the victim likely only had his fists or his gun for self defense, one of those two is going to get you out of that situation alive

You ever drive through Disney World property? They have hundreds of thousands of people on the property every single day, yet there's hardly ever any traffic on the property itself. They achieve this through free and robust public transportation that takes people between all of the hotels and the parks while penalizing drivers who don't want to take it with large parking fees. Especially with buses taking people between the airport and Disney property, there's hardly a reason for most people to rent a car. As a result, despite heavy traffic in the area surrounding Disney World, they've effectively beat traffic on the property itself, but clearly traffic is unbeatable with public transportation because the billionaire who owns a car company says it doesn't work

Countries have the right to expel foreign diplomats and embassies as long as they don't arrest them or go through their stuff when they leave. The newly couped Niger junta requested the French ambassador leave and revoked his visa, but the French are still refusing to leave, claiming that because they don't recognize the legitimacy of the new junta, they don't have to follow the junta's orders to leave. Regardless of your opinion of the new junta, in how does a former colonial power be in the right when they are blatantly ignoring the legal rights and sovereignty of their independent former colony's government that is doing things by the book? They stopped sending the ambassador food and are confining him to his embassy until he leaves, especially given the current junta that is extremely gentle treatment

For decades, the Republican party has had the Baptist/Evangelical vote in the bag without having to actually do anything thanks to abortion. Republican politicians could rile up their base attacking abortion and be excused for not doing anything about it by their constituents as abortion was a constitutional right, and because abortion was a constitutional right that couldn't be taken away, those who cared about it could still be in good conscience when they vote for a Republican. The dog caught its tail when Roe was overturned, and now that abortion can be outlawed on every level of government, Republican inaction on abortion will see their support among Baptists/Evangelicals tank. Overturning Roe is the most self damaging thing the Republican party has ever done, and now they are forced to choose between catering to religious fanatics or normal people

The value of their investments is lower because they've been pulling out of Russia. The article you sent says they've slashed the value down by 90%, and they're still going. Liquidating hundreds of millions in stocks while getting a decent value out of them takes time, and so far they've done a pretty good job selling off 90% of their Russian holdings with just a few more millions to go

Y'all are champs for suddenly taking on thousands of users at your own expense on what was meant to be a throwaway instance. It went from a small private server to hosting one of the most active communities on Lemmy in a short time, and you and your team of volunteer tech sorceresses have been doing the best you can to keep lemmy.blahaj.zone alive as it grows

It's Starbucks so yeah. They're pretty paranoid about unions after a few locations unionized

Without any crime to suspect you of, they might detain you and question you. It's not uncommon for people to turn themselves in for crimes, and there are legitimate reasons to do so especially with a lawyer, namely to get out on bail easier, avoid having the police raid your home or place of work, and perhaps used to sway the prosecution for a more favorable sentencing, but if the police have no clue what to even charge you for and they can't figure one out, they'll just be confused and frustrated, which is a dangerous combination for police

If there's one place I'd expect to have trouble hiring, it's the Pentagon's IT team. They regularly deal with the most sensitive information about the US military, and need to have clearance to see all of it. That gives them an incredibly slim hiring pool, so it's no surprise their IT team sucks

The only thing better than good in the world of business is standard. Windows may be bad, but it's the industry standard for a ton of commercial applications. A lot of software that companies use are designed for Windows, from antivirus software to Microsoft's office suite to audio and video editing software and more. Every copy of Windows is also a lot more standard than Linux distros; the customizability of Linux makes it a lot harder to provide support compared to every single Windows user being locked into certain things. As far as the IT team being "lazy" or having "a lack of knowledge" on supporting Linux, they're working on the company's dollar, and unless there's a strong, justifiable reason to increase their workload by supporting another operating system, it's an unnecessary expense for the company. There certainly are cases where there are strong, justifiable reasons such as with Google, who maintains two Linux based operating systems and needs their staff to know how to work with them, or in situations where Linux substantially outperforms Windows for the tasks employees are doing to the point that supporting Linux is worth it, but "it can do most of what Windows can alongside features that don't matter to the companies' operation" isn't the best selling point

The best thing to happen from the exodus regardless of it's size is that there is now an active, popular, and viable Reddit alternative with better mobile support than Reddit. Reddit will likely never die, but users who get sick of their BS now or in the future have legitimate options with enough active users to keep them busy

They're just normal people running the instance, not a major corporation with a legal team. While it's unfortunate they defederated, it's understandable that they'd rather be overly cautious when it comes to stuff they can be sued for

Moreso an apple with controversial but not strictly CSAM material based in a country where it's content is legal. Actually, not even an apple; Lemmy and the fediverse aren't an entity. It's an open standard for anyone to use; you don't see the Modern Language Association being blamed for plagiarized essays written in MLA format, or the WHATWG being blamed because illegal sites are written in HTML, so it's not a fair comparison to say that Lemmy/the fediverse are responsible for what people do with their open standard either

100k a day for operating in a country of 5 million people. The question isn't "how much does this affect their global earnings?", it's "is it worth paying 100k a day to run personalized ads in a country with a population of Minnesota?"

Are they trying to sell me on capitalism? Because they're doing a great job if so

A pretty important point is that Linux doesn't come installed on many devices. For most people, they buy a computer with Windows or Mac already installed and they're satisfied with their experience. They don't feel the need to find a distro, mount a USB stick, navigate through the BIOS, run an installer that wipes their hard drive, and relearn another operating system when Windows and Mac does everything that they want. When Linux comes pre installed on devices such as the Steam Deck or Chromebooks, Linux usage soars, though these devices have to use Linux because they need a heavily customized OS for their specific purpose. Laptops and desktops intended for casual use that come pre installed with Linux are far less common, so for the overwhelming majority of users, Windows or Mac is what they get and what they end up using. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft switches from charging for Windows to paying manufacturers to put Windows on their computers to get users into the Microsoft eco system if Linux became an actual competitor one day

The nice part about federated networks is that if you disagree, you can just move instances. Nobody is bound to the will of the admins like with traditional centralized social media

A decent portion of Japanese sword fighting techniques revolve around how to not break your sword in half while using it. That's not a concern with Damascus steel swords

When I need to find a specific answer on a topic and a Google search brings me to a Reddit thread, yes. Otherwise, Lemmy and Discord have replaced my Reddit addiction

We have quite a lot of employee protections (not as much as Europe but a lot more than people realize), it's the enforcement that is the issue. While you can be fired without notice for any legal reason, if you are fired for an illegal reason or an illegal reason played a role in their decision to fire you, you can get quite a nice settlement from that. However, if you are fired without a good reason, the employer has to pay for your unemployment, so the majority of employers will only fire an employee if it falls under a reason that makes you ineligible for unemployment like poor performance or attendance (and labor attorneys can often sniff out when an employer is lying about it to screw you out of unemployment). Contrary to several other countries, employees can just quit without notice or even informing their employer, as at will employment goes both ways

It created a mass exodus of users, especially active ones who post content, who have founded communities elsewhere. Lemmy exists, and for a lot of users Lemmy has completely replaced their reddit addiction. Though subreddits reopen, the quality of content has gotten significantly worse, and for users fed up with Reddit, they now have a viable alternative to go to

Trump was exposed to large amounts of highly classified information as president for four years, and has shown a willingness to sell it to the highest bidder. He'd 100% throw the US under the bus to stay in Russia, and his supporters will deny he ever did such a thing just as they deny he publicly called for storming the Capital or as they deny the current charges against him

Serious answer: you have to kill the mosquito larvae. Mosquitos like breeding in standing water, so eliminate as much of it as you possibly can from around your home. Set up bucket traps as early into mosquito season as you can; with no nearby standing water mosquitos will lay larvae in there and the larvae will die. This will cause an exponential decrease in the local mosquito population over time. While bug traps, bat houses and pet frogs may help kill adult mosquitoes, setting up traps specifically to kill mosquito larvae early is the most effective thing you can do to reduce the population

The US government has literally published a training manual on how to make improvised explosives that is freely and legally available online. It's not exactly hidden information

Developers are on the hook for potentially infinite losses without gaining revenue in a per install fee system. Expenses are entirely unpredictable for developers and bad actors can run basic install scripts to cost the company a lot, so if Unity stays their current course for a few more weeks, many of the larger developers using Unity will begin switching engines even if it means delays. It's absolutely worth it for a developer to port their game over no matter the cost, because they are easily looking at no limits to their costs if they don't

Even the premium Peacock plan gave ads for Peacock content

I work in hospitality. There's a lot of waiting around at my job, so I mostly used Reddit to kill time. I hopped over to Lemmy since Wefwef's app is better and Blahaj.zone had a Lemmy instance

Unironically this is the one area where Epic Games is absolutely in the right. They have a 12% royalty on games sold on their platform and a 5% royalty on sales over $1 million for games made with Unreal Engine, with the UE royalty being waived entirely if it's sold on the Epic Games store. They get a reasonable cut for maintaining one of the most powerful game engines and charge nearly a third of what Valve does for their storefront. If the Epic Store wasn't so dog shit, they'd be an actual competitor to Valve

They shipped the Wii encryption key along with the emulator. While there's no established legal precedent that encryption keys are protected by copyright, it's largely been assumed by those in the industry that they are. It's also blatantly a measure to circumvent anti piracy measures. If Dolphin required you to go find the Wii encryption key on your own and input it into the emulator, Nintendo would have no grounds to stand on, but they screwed up and risked everything by one of the most infamously anti emulator, litigation happy corporations on earth

As far as the protests go, they were quite successful. Reddit's traffic went massively down; users, especially power users who uploaded content and moderated subreddits, left the site; and Lemmy became a viable alternative to Reddit with the influx of users. Reddit is still struggling to replace the moderators who quit, and they've been forced to take desperate actions like reinstating r/place and paying users who get a lot of upvotes to keep traffic on the site. The decision was never going to be reversed, the old free API scheme legitimately cost Reddit money and forcing users to use the official app like every other major social media has meant they could collect more data on users to sell. But as far as what the protest accomplished besides reversing the decision, it massively hurt Reddit and bolstered Lemmy into being a viable replacement

Given that they defederated from Lemmy.world (at least Hexbear did, idk about lemmygrad), probably not

r/noncredibledefense. There are a few inactive Lemmy instances of it and the Discord server is cool, but they both pale in comparison to the subreddit

I keep seeing this article posted to scare people, but Lemmy and Mastodon aren't in the same situation as XMPP. XMPP had barely any users outside of Google Talks, with the overwhelming majority of interactions on XMPP being between Google Talks users. Google was tying their product to a public standard that they couldn't develop however they wanted, all for compatibility with very few users. When they pulled out of using XMPP to develop their own platform, the sheer lack of users on XMPP outside of Google Talks became apparent. This will not be the case with Lemmy/Kbin/Mastodon/ect. Mastodon has 10 million registered users, and Lemmy has hundreds of thousands. The majority of both service's users are not about to switch over to sell their soul to the Zucc, so if Facebook federates for a while before defederating, Lemmy and Mastodon will have as large and robust communities as they have now, and the services will live on unlike with XMPP

Gamepass and Minecraft Bedrock mostly. Gamepass is something that I use a lot that will never work with Linux, and my friend group is split between console and PC for Minecraft so Bedrock edition works best for us. I still use SteamOS on my Steam Deck and enjoy it, but switching operating systems on my main computer just to play games is a bit excessive
