A simple solution would be to ask Meta to opensource Facebook, WhatApp, Instagram and whatever their federated instance would be called code and in return, they can federate with the fediverse. I think that will show their true intentions on how much love they have for the opensource community. Put the ball in their court and if they agree, they will be welcomed to the fediverse as good faith actors.

Just my 2 cents.

WhatsApp: I have been unable to convince my family and friends to use any other platform. Plus. in alot of countries, having WhatsApp becomes a must. Office 365: The only option I can use for work including Outlook and Teams. Google Maps: I keep trying to use OsmAnd+ but it is almost impossible to search for addresses.

I selfhost my Joplin server and use the clients on my Linux desktop, my windows laptop, iphone and Android. It is definitely one of my favorite selfhosted apps. To prevent any issues with sync, the first thing I do when I open the app is to click the Sync button and do the same when I close the app at the end of the day. This way I ensure that I am always working with the latest version. It has not failed me so far, considering I am a very heavy user and have quite a few notes running at any given day.

I selfhost my own Whoogle instance. Didn't even know there were public Whoogle instance 🤣

I use Joplin. I selfhost the Joplin server and just Sync my notes across devices.

Sounds like they are saying that Winamp wants developers they dont need to pay :D

With people always lying on their resumes, I won't be surprised if I see someone posting them working with ChatGPT since the 70s 🤣

I selfhost Whoogle. It's amazing and gets the results from google minus the Ads and tracking.

If it was not for Facebook groups and market place, I would leave facebook in an instance. Most of my hobby groups are on Facebook so it would be a pain to leave it without first establishing alternatives. But I have tried selfhosting Friendica and HumHub but failed to attract any friends or family to use it instead of facebook :(

I feel that we will soon see a shift where organizations will start moving back to on-prem instead of paying for cloud services. We have begun to see our larger customers opting for migrating back to on-prem from the cloud.

Not a programmer but does that mean we will finally see Winamp come to Linux?

Just saw this link and it seems that the migration is pretty seamless. https://www.sqlservercentral.com/blogs/migrating-from-evernote-to-joplin

I use my selfhosted Whoogle instance for search

I have been running mine for a while using the Ubuntu snap package. It is installed on an Ubuntu VM on proxmox. I also have a separate collabora online server and Only Office online server running that I point my next cloud instance to for documents. I mostly use it as a file server and it have been working great. It is more like set it and forget it. It gets backed up when I take proxmox backups.

I have never used Evernote so not sure of there is a migration path. However, I have notes with documents, text, links and even screenshots and it works like a champ with all of those. I could never use any other notes app again

I don't think it would happen unless all the fans of the brand start understanding the importance of opensource. But knowing Apple, they would go bankrupt before they bend to the demands of what people actually want. As long as their customers applaud or defend every dumb decision Apple has made, they will never change.

I use Bromite from Fdroid and love it. It has a builtin Ad blocker and is basically a degoogled chrome.

When they say "inviting the developers to contribute", it sounds to me that they are looking for developers to work on Winamp without having to pay them. The article is filled with strange wordings.

For my Ubuntu desktop, I use the builtin backup tool to take backups on my NAS. For my homelab, I have everything running on Proxmox and my Proxmox backup server takes care of the homelab backups.
