Because when you have 10 people around a table who don't mind one nazi pulling up a chair, you have 11 nazis.

It feels odd to see it laid out graphically, the culture wars really are cutting the US up into bits.

I feel so bad for trans people living there now, and also worried that the far right here in Europe is relentlessly trying the same tactics too (though with less success over all, they've made headway).

Gotta take care of yourself first, nobody is going to begrudge you of that. I know exactly how you feel, I've been through the same thing before ... like they say, don't light yourself on fire to keep others warm.

You've got a good group of volunteers, they're taking care of things, don't come back until you feel completely ready!

The best way to clear a blocked road is to drive a police car into the obstruction?

Here it usually involves workers dismantling and taking stuff away.

One community on an instance, the users of that instance (who partake of The_Donald, for instance) are users of all federated instances. Thus if federated they would have fun by turning every other available community into an unpleasant experience.

As a reddit example, after posting on archery and motorcycle related subs I received threatening and sexual messages. Beehaw is the first place I've seen that actively wants to avoid that from day one, and I really hope it succeeds. Being cautious over defederation has been a big plus point for me.

Same thing with The Guardian, where their feminist opinion pieces were written by an actively transphobic woman for a long time after it was considered not-cool.

Domestic violence is absolutely something that I've seen swept under the rug in queer spaces, I usually chalk it up to the fight against bigotry taking so much effort that many community leaders don't want to risk fracturing the group they're trying to keep together.

That's a very philosophically positive way of thinking about it!

It was all going so well until the first amendment at the bottom.

Ok, so you know when you see a post about something you have in-depth knowledge about, but feel let down because fundamental parts about it are wrong?

That's this post for me. I'm a specialist working on automotive safety testing who also happens to be a woman. My boss is also a woman, we have some women test engineers, and the most senior test assessor where I work is also a woman.

If anyone wants to ask me about the state of testing vehicles vs. sexism, or anything about vehicle testing for that matter, I'm happy to talk about my work because I love it.

Unfortunately given that the part of this article regarding vehicle safety is so woefully wrong, I have doubts about the rest of it. This doesn't help make things better for anyone IMO, it just gets people mad.

Aside from it sounding as horrible as Facebook, the rush of new users is probably because a) Instagram users can go straight in, b) curiosity, and c) oh god what is Elon thinking. They probably aren't aware of Mastodon. Or Lemmy.

Dios mio, I have an account over there. When the owner/admin said they wanted to "let the community decide" the future direction of the site I could just feel where it was going ... there were already some people doing the right wing "debate" hoakey coakey

You know the scene in The Matrix where Neo gets a cookie, and there's a sign above the door that says "know thyself" ... well, the knowing thyself is a tricky thing that most people never try to do. Often because it's too hard or scary. But you're working it out, and by the time you've settled on the big questions you'll know kung fu how to do makeup and find clothes.

Two things to remember: There's no "right" answer so these things can take time. There's no "right" way to be a woman or any other gender (I have no fucking clue regarding makeup, for instance).

My understanding is that kbin is even less mature than Lemmy.

Also, OP stated that they've weighed up all available options (which would obviously include kbin) and to please not suggest things in this thread, I guess because of getting bogged down in semantic arguments rather than discussing the community aspect.

I'm not a bigot, but in my opinion the sliding scale between jam and marmalade is so fine that it's not worth distinguishing between them, it should be a spectrum of preserves.

Do they last longer? I have an IPhone 3 somewhere that just decided to stop working, yet my HTC with Android 1.2 still works fine.

Most of what's held me back from Apple products has been their planned obsolescence, where the OS was no longer supported, which I've never had with a PC. I've had my cheap second hand laptop for 7 years now and that still works fine with the latest software

Yeah, I'm old so I tend to gravitate towards forums by nature, lol ... it's a mature and proven way of working, though harder to maintain momentum on compared to an aggregator like this

Getting away into nature far enough that you can't hear or see anything man-made (except maybe a path for you to follow).

On a day when there's no wind it's comforting to have no noise at all apart from little birds and insects, but the first time it can be a little unsettling when you realise how rare it is to experience that.

It's amazing how many people will pay themselves on the back for being a good person, and then just spout nasty rubbish like that in the next breath.

I'd be happy to be your friend.

It makes me very happy that you're open to this! I'll write a proper mini-essay tomorrow (when I don't need to get some sleep), because many women have worked hard to improve safety outcomes for everyone regardless of body shape, and future is looking bright too.

What I will say for now is that I think I've seen at least one of your referenced books before, and it quoted statistics that were well out of date.

Has anything that starts with an X been poisoned now? If I were xstore's marketing department I'd feel a little on edge right now.

In other news this headline made me feel old, it took ,e a while to understand what it was trying to say

Skating used to be whole life, my right leg has been held together by a metal rod for the last 7 years now.

Like you, it was caused by an avoidable miskate that was my own fault. I can still get on skates (though that took about 3 years) and I'm limited to doing that for about half an hour and can't move fluidly.

For me the solution wasn't to do everything I could to continue doing the thing I loved, but rather to let it go. These days I ride (small, quiet) motorbikes, walk my dogs, and have recently taken up archery.

Had I not broken my leg there's a diversity of experiences I'd have missed out on, because I was enraptured with The Thing. There's more to the world than one single hobby!

If you have close friends and family, do try and talk through how you're feeling with them, and think about seeing a therapist - these sorts of limitations are hard to adapt to for everyone!

I wish you good luck in whatever sort of adventures you have next :-)

After the Brexit vote I moved away from the UK, one of the reasons is my partner is from another country and there was a general feeling of hostility in the air ... I can empathise with those leaving, and if it were me I'd be doing the same thing!

FWIW making a new life has been very rewarding and we're in a much better place, moving can be about making something new more than losing something old. Now when I visit "home" I feel very glad to have got away.

JFC, with this sort of instability anything could happen.

Agreed on all counts ... that said, his first "I'm not going to resign" speach got resounding applause, so I'm sure he had a lot of behind-the-scenes support to stay as long as he did.

Hopefully whoever gets his job will be both better and able to cut out more of the rot.

(I live in Spain, I've been royally pissed off at how the players have been treated)

1: An open world exploration game that doesn't have combat ... like Breath of the Wild but without all the fighting and with lots of short stories and puzzles.

Basically I want to be able to go wandering off and uncover ancient ruins etc without having to fight for my life.

2: Snowrunner, but with a good narrative story mode and gearboxes that actually work.

There's so much potential to have engaging stories in that game, which could be tied into improved game structure (namely restricting truck / tire choice to make some tasks challenging in an interesting way).

I still use my HTC Android 1.2 phone for Google maps sometimes, some people will be out there still using them ... I'm guessing it's an old enough version that the still active devices are serviceable and well built.

Hi, just wanted to say I think you're really cool and keep up the good work :-)

I live in a remote place and a few times a year have to live without stuff, so my list after water, food and shelter (assuming those are the minimum version of what the word means) would be: A sanitary toilet A means of washing oneself A reliable way of cooking food A reliable way of providing light at night Access to xkcd.com

Do you have any IRL friends that know and are supportive? Having some backup physically with you when you come out can really help with nerves ... it's a really difficult thing to do, so how you're feeling is natural.

Your mother's reaction sounds like either a kneejerk reaction, it's very easy to be pro-LGBT when you're not directly confronted with it ... with a shock like that some people fall back on the homophobia they were raised in (that stuff sticks like dog doo to the bottom of your shoe). Take care of yourself first and foremost, but try and be patient with her - given time and space she might come around on her own or with just gentle nudging.

Whatever happens, in the world (both online and IRL) there are people who will genuinely support you and love you for who you are. Being brave enough to step out into the light is the hard part, and you've already taken the first step towards that - you can do it!

That's not really helpful to a gay teenager, though. It can feel suffocating at that point in life.

Either that or they were fishing for dick pics

Just what we need, libertarian ogres ...

That seems like a big ask given that the admins mentioned they don't have the resources to start from scratch and a Lemmy fork wouldn't fix the issues. There is almost no possibility of this happening, my friend

It's funny how you describe team sports for kids, when I was young it was always used as a system to punish the weak.

Anywho, my favourite hobbies that keep me fit have all been based on not being in a team. Mountain biking was always the best, but now my knees disagree so I'm doing 3D / field archery ... I've managed to make a new friend through that, so even though I'm crap I still enjoy going :-)

What we move to could still have an app ... I'm using Liftoff and Connect, they both do ok, and I'm guessing adapting to another app (or good mobile web frontend) wouldn't be as painful as you think!

I was trying to work out why a program needed more of the bartender from the Simpsons in it.
I don't know of any other Moes.

"A person is smart, people are dumb panicky animals and you know it!"

I think it's a good way to go about things, Rome wasn't built in a day and a community isn't made with quotes and idioms (unlike my replies)

Still adapting to Calibri ... I liked arial because it was usually near the top of the font list so it was easy to find, lol
