Would love to see some lemmy advertising there.
The U.S. is pretty late with this, compared to the European Union. Only a few special bulbs are still sold here. Apart from that, the only allowed lighting technology is LED.
The only real issue are updates. After just 3 years my previous phone didn't get any security updates and I had to get new hardware. I actually liked my previous phone more than my current one. But it is how it is.
Nice overall but still a bit silent here and there.
But I actually have more motivation to interact here than I ever had on Reddit.
Still no lemmy ads 😔
Really useful and fun to use. Unfortunately I'm nearly done with all tasks in my region.
Google sees that their business is at risk.
Primarily Google is an advertisement company. And so their top priority is to profile you to serve you targeted ads. Every single product of Google has this number one priority.
One small /boot which is also my EFI system partition.
And a partition for / which covers all the rest of the drive.
Partitioning only limits flexibility. At some time you will regret your choice of partition sizes.
The problem is that Google is able to more or less dictate how the web works at that time. Apart from Firefox and Safari, which both only have a minor market share, pretty much everything is Chrome based.
If Google wants to push some silly idea just to ensure that their silly ads are not blocked, then they'll do it. I fear that noone really can stop this stupid idea.
I don't see much protest anymore on the subreddits I'm subscribed to. Just feels like it is overall more quiet than before.
I only visit from time to time to check if there are interesting links shared. If so I share this link here on Lemmy.
All the alternatives are advertised to be shipped with Windows only and so not interesting to me. Probably this is interesting for a lot of potential customers but I don't want Windows on any device that I own.
Get one with a good panel and ignore the "Smart" part. Better use something like a Fire TV Stick.
Python. Works for nearly everything I need. I mostly write small helper tools (most of them shared under a FOSS license) and for my job, I developed a backend API server which sits behind a web application. I also use Python for scientific math stuff as nearly every Matlab also exists for Python.
I did use Perl a lot before but in my opinion Python took over the role of Perl. I loved Perl for having a module for just about everything but nowadays most Perl modules are unmaintained and you find the "good stuff" for Python.
Great. I always wanted a truckload of ads dumped across the podcast I want to listen to 👍
Actually it doesn't really move away that much from the "everything is a file" principle. For example a "service" is a file describing how to properly start a particular service and if you enable a service, then a symlink is created to your service file, ....
Just to be sure you should always remove information, you don't want on the internet, by yourself.
I always have most metadata storage disabled on my smartphone. Good way to prevent leaking of a location stored in images.
Having a conductor with zero resistance allows to transmit (regenerative) power from where it can be generated for free (solar in the desert) all across to where it is needed without loosing any power on this way.
Sorry for the spam. Jerboa needs a longer timeout before giving up without letting me know if my comment went out 😔
Actually it would be better if more people would start to do so, ignoring that it gets censored. If the whole thing ends with just an empty canvas would be way better than giving up now.
I use ad blockers everywhere. I hate ads and wouldn't buy anything advertised there anyway.
League of Legends.
I had some fun at the beginning but soon realized that this game just is way too complicated. I don't want to study a game and watch dozens of YouTube tutorials just to be at an average "not really bad" level. And my friends tried to convince me to play over and over again and I joined them without actually having any fun at all. Will never play this dogshit game again.
So how does Google know my address? I don't have it in my Google profile.
So Google will add a new form to my profile where I can enter all the information I want to be notified about? Full address, all my phone numbers, just to be sure my credit card number, ...
And this will totally not be used for other purposes.
Isn't Gentoo all about compiling everything?
Maybe you should search for some rolling release distribution. I'm using Arch since many years and am quite happy with it. You rarely have to build anything yourself. Only if you have to use the AUR.
"Popular version of Linux"? I smell really bad things. They could lock this down to just one distribution.
At first: In most cases you don't need and don't want one.
I wanted to get one as I have several old (over two decades and more) Windows game CDs that I've bought long before switching to Linux. Back in the days it was actually a thing that sometimes malware slipped into professionally pressed CDs (especially on discs that came with PC game magazines or cheap game collection boxes).
For this case (Windows software check before attempting to run with wine) I can recommend ClamAV. It is open source and available on probably every distribution. But there is no need to attempt having it running all the time. I just run scans from the terminal whenever needed.
I really like the JBL speakers. The "Go" is pretty impressive for its size and price. But the "Charge" really rocks. Easily runs for a whole evening AND night with one charge and has great base.
Maybe they still run on "new old stock" bulbs until they are used up. But even if they do, they clearly didn't do the math. I've upgraded all my lighting to LED and binned all my incandescent stock.
If it is open source, then I'll test it for sure.
They still give all the code to their customers and as it is still GPLed code, noone can stop redistribution. So I'm wondering who will be the first RHEL customer which runs some "open mirror" of the RHEL codebase.
More likely the end of desktop Windows. But I wouldn't take my bet on it as Windows users often tend to accept everything Microsoft does, sooner or later.
TLDR but after quickly reading some parts it seems like you really should try another distribution. There are better choices on the desktop.
I have a few kbin communities subscribed from Lemmy and interaction works fine.
If you don't use the webinterface a lot, it probably doesn't matter which one of the two you are using.
Nothing supports kbin as they (so far) do not have any official API to use.
Actually I have a real Bluetooth keyboard to type things on my phone as typing on a small phone screen can be an absolute pain 😂
In my experience the whole DVB driver situation on Linux is really messed up. Seems to be partly because of difficult communication with the linux kernel maintainers and partly because of lazyness of hardware manufacturers (they don't care). Another problem is that DVB really runs out of favor. It is not "cool anymore" as everyone uses streaming services nowadays and so less and less "spare time developers" still care about "TV". This even seems to be visible in less and less DVB hardware still developed.
I would just give up on the idea to still run a tuner directly on a PC. Get yourself a "SAT>IP" tuner, add it to your network and stream your TV programs over your home network.
Edit: It is even possible to set up your own Sat>IP server with "minisatip". So you could get a mini PC, plug the tuner(s) you already have, only care about getting them working there and bury this dedicated TV streaming server somewhere in the house.
Lawnchair. But get it from GitHub or F-Droid.
Difficult. Every time I thought "don't support Amazon this time, buy from this small webshop" I was disappointed.
The problem is that smaller shops often really suck with customer care. When buying from smaller businesses, I now always want some "big business" (Amazon or eBay) in between. Way easier to get support this way.
Card whenever possible. Faster and more secure in almost every aspect.

Can we just pretend that Twitter no longer exists?
All that Elon Musk still tries here is how far he has to go until Twitter finally collapses.
