I think they dont like the fact that these awards also grant reddit premium to the user who receives them. But they cant just remove that feature of the rewards without killing rewards otherwise they look really bad. So the new award system will just be a community highlight. Maybe something that changes the background color of the post to highlight it on the front page. Like gold background. Then they will allow advertisers to also pay to make their "paid advertisements" also have background colors to generate a dark pattern where they trick you into clicking ads because you think they are awarded front page posts.

Thats my guess at least.

and then those same people who want it banned close their curtains and start watching it.

That is literally what happens every year with r/place. Hundreds of thousands of bots placing pixels based on pregenerated images. Then the bots fight each other. Then reddit uses their own bots to censor things or mod tools to drop a bunch of random pixels over the top of images to wipe them out.

The difference is that the email protocol has long been established and any new email client is built to that protocol standard. What we have here is an open protocol still being developed. The fear is that FB will force changes into that protocol and take it over. Then it will no longer be an open development protocol. By expunging FB right now before they get a firm grip on the userbase it can preemptively prevent FB from causing damage.

We are kind of in unexplored territory right now. You could compare it to google/MS taking over xmpp but it's not quite the same situation either.

But the reality is that the current fediverse doesnt need facebook to be successful. It already has the users to continue to grow. By combining user pools facebook would have the majority share with their instagram users which means they would have a controlling share of users and would leach users away from the fediverse over time until they broke away at which point fediverse would die as most users would be forced to follow in order to keep their feeds.

This way those feeds never mingle with FB and thus fb cant leech them.

The biggest benefit I see so far is the lack of bots. I know there are still some bots out there but most of them are useful bots and not just karma farming bots or bots designed for propaganda.

I have accounts on a few different communities. Mostly because there is no real way to know how the community is until you start interacting with it and it starts interacting with with other communities.

Beehaw is nice because they are actually trying to cultivate a friendly community and moderate a lot of the trash out. But also... sometimes you dont want that hand holding...

As someone who doesnt use twitter... yes this was totally worth it!

I want more games like valheim. Could care less about the graphic HD quality. Just give me a good game that looks good enough I can forget about my actual life for a while.

Counter rebuttal... no. Fuck SA and fuck everything SA stands for. I dont want them in my tech. I get they are diversifying but they can fuck right off. Anyone who accepts their money will end up having to accept their agenda and I'm ready to boycott any company that does.

Is there a way to check if a user account exists for my instagram account without logging in?

I'm sure it's not a unique idea. Lots of really smart and clever people think like me after all :D

It was going before that.

This is not true. I have always surfed the frontpage and I dont subscribe. If I want to read a sub I specifically go to that sub.

The amount of content being posted this week vs a month ago is significantly less. I can browse the front page right now and it will take me significantly less time to get to the dregs (threads with less than 20 replied) It used to take 2 hours but you can get these today in about 10 min and then once you've seen those posts they will stay on the first 10 pages for days instead of what used to take a few hours.

This whole thing feel like a giant slice of gas lighting to me. Most of the comments and upvotes appear to be from bots. Even if you read one of those 50k+ comment treads you'll hit comment chains that are obviously just bots talking to themselves saying the exact same things in the same order with only slight variations. It's weird.

Time will tell if reddit survives. I kind of think they will survive personally. But its not going to be what it was even a month ago for a while.

A modest proposal. Which Lemmy server can finish with a prominent place in the r/place final image!

Which horrible drm is it using again?

The only problem with that, and its not really a big problem yet, is that reddit is using your content to generate money for themselves in increasingly unethical methods. Previously you could see and interact with content without logging in from many different platforms. Now, on mobile, you can only interact with it on one platform (their own app that forces ads etc) and increasingly you need to be logged in to access it (so they can better track your movement and feed user specific ads). It is not unlikely that in the future they rework reddit premium to prevent people from seeing free content.

So the end result of your content could be that reddit uses it to take advantage of someone in their time of need by forcing them to pay for a month of reddit premium just to get help with their issues which you provided a solution to for free.

Now, that's a stretch but only because I dont see how reddit can force a premium subscription on people without everyone rioting and burning the place down. But they seem to have killed all 3rd party apps which was also something I didnt think could possibly happen without bloodshed and it did easily.

With all that said, I didnt delete my comment history either because I personally feel that it's better to help people than to hurt reddit. But at the current direction and speed reddit is heading I think it's not out of the question that I would in the future change my mind and delete everything.

I think its a good idea. I hope this will allow nsfw to be broken up into better tags to block porn but allow other nsfw topics. Or vice versa.

This is where I am at. Got a phone survey from comcast. Gave them 1 star on every category except how likely am I to continue to use comcast at which point I gave them a 10... because it's a monopoly and it's literally the only ISP in my area. I pay 150 dollars for 10mb/5mb service with a 3tb cap. If I go two blocks in any direction I can get 100mb/50mb for 40 bucks with no data cap. Even the exact same plan from comcast 2 blocks away is half the price with 8 times the speed and no cap.

Delicious. One of the few fights my wife and I had was when she offered me some of her sushi she had just purchased and I put some butter in a pan and lightly seared both sides and then sat down next to her... and that's when the fight started.

Tasted delicious though, had her try it and she agreed that it tasted better cooked but also that defeated the whole premise of Sushi and I was going to hell for doing this thing.

She no longer offers me sushi. Also, it turns out sushi people are just eating raw fish because they are pretentious and not because it taste better raw.

You should join his discord. He talks a bit about the process sofar. But he doesnt seem to be the type to write paragraphs. He seems more like a line or two here and there intersperse with a joke or 3. It's been fun watching the transition from "reddit is dying, thanks for all the fish" to "lemmy might be a thing let me look into it" into "I think this will work, I wonder if the lemmy devs will be open to suggestions for things I wanted from reddit for 5+ years".

LJ Dawson said he would look into it but my guess is it would require a lot of work and a whole new app.

I did notice that he killed the official sync subreddit as well as almost all of his comments on reddit. I get why people are killing their content but it just feels like reddit is going to get to play the "victor writes the history" card. Luckily i already joined the sync discord in anticipation of him killing his content for reddit.

I still think Kisses. (the whole XOXO hugs and kisses thing).

Mainly because Elon is homophobic and would hate the fact that his new platform is just a bunch of people kissing each other.

Then the wet is oily.

I dropped signal when they dropped sms. I get why they did it but they removed their usefulness for most people. You could. Normally convince someone to use it foe sms and then start using the secure features with that person. Now without sms most people wont even consider it.

Nice. It was inevitable. A general lemmy instance needs to protect itself.

The first time one of these lemmy servers gets hit with official court papers thing will no doubt change. A big part of the operation budget (well maybe not so big of a percentage but big as in price) is to hire a legal team to handle stuff like this and juggle international laws.

I imagine a few lemmy instances will be killed by things like this.

They said the same thong about ssds for mass storage. Granted this tech is dramatically different. But we went from coffee table sized laser disks in the 90s to psp disc's in the 2000s. That's like a 1:100 size reduction and at a 1000 x data storage rate. Who knows what the future stores.

Double whoosh

I feel like this is a good time to dust off the reddit account and help make a giant advertisement for lemmy.

Posted a question to lemdro.id last week and sofar only got useless bot replies that seemed to have scrolled previous reddit posts about the same question.

edit: to fix bad phone autocorrect.

That is what a bot would say! (Also the post history shows it's almost definitely a bot)

Im not trying to discredit your arguments. You just seemed like a bot. (and your post history shows you are almost 100% a bot) I feel that your arguments discredit themselves without any help from me.

Cool, I mean as long as you are not implying OP should delete his post because you dont like it then I wont tell you that you could also just not to open it.

You are now immune so fight them back! Lots of?biting and clawing until they accept you as their leader.

Xing is short for kissing IE XOXO. So instead of tweeting we are now kissing!

I understand I just think your argument is weak for it. You are telling someone to self censor news they post and you could just as easily self censor news you read.

If it's such a trigger topic for you that you lash out on someone posting news about it then maybe you need to self evaluate and make better choices about what news you take in.
