I think for most people they have other stuff to worry about, Reddit and its alternatives aren't that important for them. If there is an alternative placed before them that is enticing, they'll use it. Maybe as "first movers" or early adopters it falls on us to make the place more appealing.
Also you never know, those same people might be fighting other fights in other places (offline, for example)
Hence why we gotta fend off corporations like Meta from the fediverse as much as possible, they’ll corrupt and control it.

One factor, in Europe a company’s expenses and taxes for you are higher paying into the social welfare system - which you do benefit from, so it works out. That US worker doesn’t have as good of public transportation system, healthcare insurance, and so on and need to make up for it.

Agreed, I pay for YouTube premium and in the world of corporate crap and fees and stuff I’m ok with that value trade off relatively. Hell, I would have paid for Reddit, too, if they weren’t assholes.

Some instances like ours at Lemmy.pro ask simple questions to try and filter out bots etc. Other admin options include requiring email address be used and the captcha difficulty level. Bad thing is if you enable these, places like browse.feddit or whatever it’s called list your registrations as being closed. They’re not, they just restricted with a small challenge.
Currently? I just do without it and replace that surfing with other content.
Me too. When I first looked at Mastodon I was like “oh those addresses are weird that will never work” for some lame, resistant to change reason. Now I’m like “bring on the alphabet soup links and whatever quirks I don’t care, the fediverse is awesome!.”

You don’t “have to” use apps that compromise your security. If you really want to switch to better practices you can and can still thrive. I got and persuaded my whole company and friend groups off of bad apps. It’s possible.
I’m using Memmy on iOS right now and I swear it’s as good as Apollo was, it looks great. Also a fan of wefwef.app. Anybody considering Lemmy can be ok using third party apps, it’s all fine.
We’re using it and it’s fast and the Element client is great.
Yeah I think the name Stephanie is funny, not gross. It isn’t as catchy or easy to make short and curt though, but it actually is, “Steph” works ok.

How is search at the moment? I’m trying to get to communities I know exist via search but can’t. I wait forever but it still says “No results” even high I know there should be.
When I first can to Lemmy there was a good bit of it, I think since then it’s been drowned out by all the less extreme folks.
