Do you mean 87.7% use the YouTube iOS/Android App or 87.7% use their smartphone to watch YouTube? Because in the latter case you also can use ReVanced, Firefox + Adblock, Invidious, etc.

I have no idea how modding works, but how would they get ready for a patch without having the files in advance?

My two use cases are project brainstorming and boilerplate code, which saves a lot of time for me. For example sometimes I find an interesting paper and want to try it out in Python. If they did not provide code that will take some time and trial and error to get it running. Or I just copy the whole paper into ChatGPT and get an initial script that sometimes even works with it's first try. But that is not the point, I can do the last steps myself, it really is a time saver for me with regards to programming.

Switching from Firefox to Librewolf has some pros and cons. Librewolf is a fork of Firefox focused on privacy and security, with telemetry stripped out and privacy settings maxed out by default. You'll gain better out-of-the-box privacy protections, meaning less tracking and data collection without having to tweak settings yourself.

However, you might lose some convenience. Librewolf might not support certain Firefox features like Sync, since it relies on Mozilla's servers (not sure about that point, maybe it does work). It can also break some websites due to the stricter privacy settings. Another thing to consider is that you won't get updates as quickly as Firefox.

Regarding browser fingerprinting, it's a tricky beast. Librewolf can help somewhat by making your fingerprint less unique, but it's not a silver bullet. Tools like uBlock Origin and container tabs are great, but adding something like the CanvasBlocker extension can also help reduce fingerprinting. Ultimately, no setup is perfect, but Librewolf is a solid step towards better privacy.

Exactly, it feels like 50/100 is the baseline and 75/100 is mediocre. 75/100 tells me I have to be a fan of the genre to enjoy it. This rating inflation really shows how dependent reviewers are. This is one of the reasons I like organisations like Stiftung Warentest instead of depending on some biased product comparison blogs.

I had very good experiences with Google for Jobs, where I could set up alerts for certain search terms and the radius in which I was searching, whereby you can also exclude cities if necessary. This meant I didn't have to use another job board, I only used it for forwarding. Since the last rework, Google for Jobs almost always finds the company websites with the job advertisments directly, so I no longer have to look at job boards at all, a very pleasant experience. I used LinkedIn once to test it and all that came up was generic crap, it's unbelievable how a site that's supposed to be about professional life can be so sub-par at finding jobs. And just to conclude this post, I successfully found a job with this method.

You are correct that the term "podcast" derives from the iPod, but interestingly the term predates Apple's addition of podcasting features to the iPod and the iTunes software.

This is the first result when I search with Kagi, so maybe you should switch your search engine. With Google's degrading performance you hear more and more about alternative engines, for example Qwant and Metager are based in the EU and care a bit more about your privacy than their profit in comparison to Google.

For work and some personal stuff I often look for code and can push websites like GitHub to appear more often. Or I can block Pinterest in my search results. I tried to do this in SearXNG, but this was too much of a hassle so in a way I pay kagi for convenience. I recently got a new job and will evaluate in the coming months if it is still worth the money, but right now I am satisfied. Nobody else I know would pay for a search engine, so I can understand the stance, but I am really fed up with all the advertising and enshitification so I thought why not give it a try. And yes, because it was recommended here.

I can't give you an answer to the legality question, but some additional information I heard in a podcast: The acquisitions came at a time when money was cheap and people were playing a lot more video games because of the pandemic. Unfortunately, they miscalculated because money is now much more expensive again and the gaming industry has not been able to retain these players across the board. Only 4 games that have come out since then have brought in much more than the production costs, which then had to finance the remaining ~15 (all from my memory, but it should be in the order of magnitude). That didn't work out and so now cuts have to be made to avoid burning even more money.

Every week I read about another alternative for Google Photos, so the solution is not far away (three posts down I found this for example). Why don't you use applications, plugins and/or DNS settings to never see any ad?

Does that include Sponsorblock? Otherwise you still see ads, just from the content creators and not from YouTube.

I didn't try this out on my OLED steam Deck yet, but dark scenes are a bit of a strain on the eye on the LCD one. I played mark of the ninja on it and the black and darker stuff (which the game has a lot of) is illuminated like any other color, which feels a bit unpleasant. With OLED black is the absence of light, which feels much more natural.

I can't help you with your specific updates, but I just wanted to share my experience since the blackout: I only used Lemmy since then and as you know here is less content and less comments, but instead of looking into reddit I just did other things I like, but rarely did because doom scrolling was always the number one. Now I look through Lemmy and maybe spend 1 hour per day. Reddit was 3-6 per day I would say. Now I started to read a book and went through the photo backlog I wanted to sort. So when "filling the void" means "time killing", then I can recommend to take a step back and do what you like to do but didn't because of reddit.

Why doesn't it work with a Lemmy account? I thought that's the point of the Fediverse?

I don't even understand those stats, apparently there are around 1 Mio. Lemmy users and 8.5 Mio. Posts per day? So every user creates 8.5 Posts per day?

How would embedding help them if Sponsorblock already skips embedded sponsor ads from the creators? This seems like just an additional category for Sponsorblock.
