I'll stand by the idea that people were not mad about the API going paid, they were just disgusted by the way spez managed the whole situation. This was a PR nightmare from the beginning and his competence as a CEO should be questioned after all this is done.

Just a heads up, you're using kbin which is a different "website" than lemmy. You are also seeing a thread that originated in lemmy. That means both kbin and lemmy can see each other's content, but the website UI is different between them so if you read about some UI element and can't find it in kbin that might be one of the reasons.

That being said, kbin also has a sidebar with useful information. In the mobile site you can find it at the very bottom on the page, since it doesn't fit to the side in such a small screen.

I won't claim to defend Meta, but wouldn't at least give them the benefit of the doubt until there's details of the project a saner approach? We literally know nothing about it except it's in the works.

You can click the cancel icon besides the subscribe button in any magazine to stop them being shown to you

But they are not completely equal. Yes, kbin Magazines display threads just as Lemmy communities do, however Magazines have the Microblog tab where they display posts across the Fediverse that include the tags associated with them. That is extra functionality which Lemmy does not have.

Could you guys come engage with https://kbin.social/m/HikingPics @HikingPics !HikingPics?
I'm close to running out of my own photos to share 😭😭😭

I would guess that's a federation issue. Probably someone from your instance subscribed for the first time when the first of those 4 was published so none of the previous ones are synced, but you should be able to see all future ones :) Thanks for checking it out!

Well yeah, but there isn't any indication that they're modifying the standard at all. ActivityPub is still it's own thing that they will be presumably tapping into, what I get from the current info is they are just creating a kbin/Mastodon competitor which should be its own thing entirely.

The original StarCraft with those amazing (at the time) cut scenes

I understand and share the negative sentiment towards them, but again, what it looks like they're working on is a product that will connect to the Fediverse, it will not modify the ActivityPub protocol which is used for the open communication. From what I understand, any shenanigans they try to run would be limited to their instance, while we benefit from the added content they could provide.

I'm not saying let's welcome them with open arms, I'm just saying it would be good to wait until we know anything about the product before we rush any decision, in the name of growing the Fediverse.

Yeah the hamburger menu is not intuitive at all, but you can also scroll all the way down in a magazine to see those options

Looks beautiful! It would be great if you could come over and share on https://kbin.social/m/HikingPics :)

It is useful to have just 2 logins, one for kbin (or lemmy) and one for Mastodon (or Calckey).

You can see content from Mastodon on kbin but it's not the same experience since there's no timeline, hashtag follow, etc. Similarly you can see threads from kbin in Mastodon but the UI is not very nice.

For kbin and lemmy, different logins are not needed since they share the way they show information. So you can seamlessly browse lemmy content in kbin without worrying where it was originally posted.

You're comparing two different things though. Of course I do not want to federate with Gab or Truth, however that is because I do not want to federate with their users. You are saying we should not federate with Meta, but because of their admins, not their users.

Should we not federate with lemmy.ml because their admins are pro Russia? Or is there value in the interactions we can have with their users?

Is there not a tiny possibility that the users Meta brings have a net positive effect over the admins in their instance? As I said, we still don't know since we have literally no info about this product. You might be right in saying they will bring over hate speech and such, but I do not think every Booky McBookface will find their way to the Fediverse, and if they do THEN we can take a decision on federating with them or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they can already do that since all of the info in the Fediverse is public, they do not need their product for it.

@Silejonu shared this link with the posture a Mastodon instance is taking, which is what makes the most sense to me: https://hub.fosstodon.org/facebook-fosstodon-fedi
