Is this what cracking Denuvo does to people?

Huh, that didn't take long. Lemmy doesn't have legs if this is the start of things (community fragmentation).

It now looks like this in 0.35:

Just reading through this post, I think it would be good for Lemmy to have a feature that shows users when writing a comment or post that it won't be seen by users on X instance (in case lemmy.world users are not aware that beehaw.org has defederated them).

If they still go though with the comment or post, it would have an icon that if you hover over/click on it, it shows the communities that have defederated them or what the effect is (X users can't see this post, Y users are not seeing the "True" post etc.)

I don't think I'm explaining it well, but there needs to be some visual indication so anyone on any instance knows that a certain comment or post isn't being seen by users of a certain instance or whatever - or maybe that isn't feasible as there are certain instances that everyone would block.

Good god that's terrifying.

I think fragmentation is more susceptible on Lemmy due to the instance design, i.e. there are unlimited instances on Lemmy, each with multiple communities ("subreddits"), but only one instance on Reddit. So there could be 100 c/gaming on Lemmy, but only one r/gaming on Reddit.

It could just be the subreddits I'm subscribed to, but I don't have any fragmentation on there. The most fragmentation I have is something like r/games (discussion) and r/gaming (pictures), so they serve different purposes.

Maybe we are just seeing teething issues on Lemmy right now though, but seeing something like this is disappointing (spoken from someone who is on neither instance).

I can recommend, for Android:

Connect

Liftoff

Thunder

I'm using all 3, plus Jerboa, as they are all fantastic apps. At some point I'll just stick with one, but it's exciting following the development of these apps. Use Obtainium to keep them up to date (although Connect is Google Play only).

edit: my most upvoted comment is about beans.

I don't have much of an imagination so I asked Bing AI:

  • LemmyGo: A simple and fast way to access Lemmy on your mobile device.
  • Lemur: A cute and catchy name that plays on the similarity between Lemmy and lemur, a type of primate.
  • Lemo: A sleek and modern name that sounds like a combination of Lemmy and emoji.
  • Lemix: A name that suggests mixing and sharing content on Lemmy.
  • Lemyx: A name that uses an unconventional spelling to stand out from the crowd.

I understand the decisions made but I would be pretty annoyed if I had a lemmy.world or a sh.itjust.works account and I'll explain why below.

Looking on https://browse.feddit.de/ Beehaw has the largest communities for Gaming, Technology, Chat, News, Programming, Politics and Music (and probably more). These are staple communities that the majority of users will be subscribed to one or more.

Those users now need to make a decision, they either make a new account on Beehaw (or another instance that isn't defederated by Beehaw) so they can continue to browse those communities, or they instead keep their accounts on lemmy.world / sh.itjust.works and join smaller and less active communities to replace the Beehaw ones.

Unfortunately trolls can create a load of accounts in instance ABC and spam Beehaw until Beehaw defederate instance ABC until there are no large instances left.

It's good that Beehaw are looking to refederate with both instances, but I imagine that the majority of people expressing their opinions thought defederation was a final decision.

I wonder if they would still be able to sell location data in aggregate?

I play Pokémon Go (yes that's still a thing) and Niantic recently made a deal that they don't sell individual location data which people have taken as they sell bulk location data instead (scrubbing data such as your name etc).

This is actually amazing. I've done a bit of editing as I play Pokémon Go which uses OSM for the background map. I got fed up of just looking at roads so I mapped in all the buildings, shops, parks etc near me.

This gamifies walking and exploring which I love!

There are some fantastic apps being made right now though. For android I am following development for:

Connect

Jerboa

Liftoff

Thunder

Connect is only on Google Play, but the bottom 3 I keep updated using the Obtainium app which grabs the releases from GitHub (gets updates faster then waiting for Google Play).

It's just a gotcha to them. If I read an article from The Verge and Reddit hasn't commented on it, I'm not even going to remember that quote, let alone make that connection that the article must be unsubstantiated hearsay.

It must make them feel better saying it though.

It's a 2 day blackout for god's sake, and it's nearly at the end of it! Was it really necessary to do that?

That's true, but they still serve different purposes, i.e. r/pcgaming is specific. Using that example, it's not like we have r/gaming2 which serves the exact same purpose as r/gaming, and has a similar size user base.

I think things will settle as you say, but this isn't a good start when the user base is exploding. I'm only just getting my head around it all and I'm a fairly tech minded person for someone who doesn't work in the field. Something like this is just going to put a lot of people off, which is a shame.

Remember how long DivX/XviD hung on for, it's all down to device compatibility.

::: spoiler spoiler Dumbledore kills Snape :::

I replaced all my movies from x264 to x265 versions. Went to play a movie and it said it couldn't transcode the file. Looked into it and you have to pay to do hardware transcoding - my own fault for not testing a x265 file first haha.

Installed Jellyfin where transcoding using your own hardware is free and I haven't looked back.

What happens if you use SmartTubeNext on a TV? I'm assuming the interface wouldn't support the 3 strike YouTube popup so I guess you'd just get blocked without knowing why?

I'm guessing ReVanced will support the popup so you'd know.

Doesn't this make NewPipe better in that instance? If it's client side you aren't going to be rate limited.

There is also a fork of NewPipe that integrates SponsorBlock (I don't know if Piped has that).

The links under section 1 link to Reddit, may be an idea to host those elsewhere?

EDIT: I missed the link at the bottom, looks like it's all on rentry.co

Lemmy lore in the making.

Sure it is, just Google "pre-owned games" and you'll probably have hits from whatever the main game supplier js in your country (GameStop, GAME etc.).

Also it would be good to implement one of those toast notifications "press back again to exit" that other apps have.

I only check Reddit now for a game sub which, while on Lemmy, doesn't have critical mass yet (and I'm not sure it will).

They kind of work, you can see below that the content is not from those communities. I have to change the sort method to get the content, but the sort method is broken for me as I'm on lemmy.one which is not on v18:

It's partly why I joined lemmy.one as they disable downvotes.

Oh yeah, my mistake. So on Beehaw communities it would basically be lemmy.world users speaking amongst themselves from the perspective of lemmy.world.

It's the Issues page on either the Lemmy or the Lemmy-UI repository (I don't know which one is more appropriate):

https://github.com/LemmyNet

I don't have a GitHub account so I haven't submitted anything there, but feel free to suggest my idea.

The feature would still be useful when commenting on third instances though.

See the third instances section of this comment:

If Beehaw has say the main gaming community, then that's going to be subscribed from users from all different instances, so there will probably be more comments from non Beehaw users on there than Beehaw users.

Hopefully the main communities move out of Beehaw to an instance that doesn't block large communities though.

Pokémon Go by Niantic, provided you live in a high population area (or an area with plenty of Points of Interest, or POIs). The premise is you walk around outside and catch Pokémon - the game uses GPS (think like walking around with Google Maps open).

I recommend it, but the player motivation is probably as low as it has been due to Niantics decisions to walk back COVID decisions, as well as the general state of the game (bugs etc.), but it's fine to motivate you to take a daily walk for sure, or just something to do on a commute if you are sat on a bus for example.

Ingress which is the first game Niantic made, and laid the foundations for Pokémon Go regarding the map (the games generally share the same POIs). It's more competitive as there are two teams and you fight for control over the POIs whereas in Pokémon Go the POIs are generally places to restock items. It uses GPS like Pokémon Go.

Again I recommend this, if not to at least check out for an hour. The game doesn't hold your hand as much so it's best to join a nearby community.

Relay too

It would be more wouldn't it?

Total = Number of Instagram accounts + Threads only accounts

Ah, hadn't realised you were on about PC gaming.

Physical editions for PC gaming for me died a long time ago as I pretty much exclusively use Steam.

Consoles however I always try and get physical where possible.

Do you have a link please? I can only see 0.34 from the below:

Regarding your last paragraph, I agree. I'm subscribed to gaming in lemmy.ml and beehaw so see the same content twice regularly. Duplicate communities raise other concerns for me though:

Which one is the defacto community to join? Using the Gaming community as an example, maybe one leans more to images and the other has more meaty discussion threads just by way of who has joined those communities - nothing to do with the rules. But if you subscribe to both, the majority of the content may be duplicate posts instead? It's not clear from the community title alone.

Is the potential squandered as communities are potentially splintered? Maybe people just stick to one community without joining the other. It'll take time for a certain community to establish itself as the main community with the highest quality posts, but due to the volume of users on the main instances maybe there won't be a main community? Or maybe people won't even be aware of multiple communities for the same topic as the names are different, e.g. football Vs soccer.
