To add to this, on Lemmy I often find myself both agreeing and disagreeing with a user depending on the topic and community. It adds a layer of additional context and nuance to that user. If I was just to follow the user vs. community, however, I may get the impression that the user is not worth following if I happen to run across them on a topic that we have disagreements on.

"I think it probably..."

  1. You're a fucking surgeon general. You shouldn't base your opinions re: public health on what you "think" and "believe," but on science and facts
  2. If you do have a hypothesis to that effect, then run some tests and studies and either prove it or disprove it and shut the fuck up
  3. None of this is how mRNA works. It's a fucking messenger you disingenuous dolt

Because Israelis are raised from birth to view everyone in Gaza as sub-human scum who would kill them at first opportunity if given one. The far right government propaganda has done a number on the population.

It's insane that we as a society are even having the debate between pushing capital investment strategies to adapt and come into the 21st century or dragging globally-distributed workers back to the 20th century just to avoid short-term pain and costs associated with updating outdated laws, tax incentives, and capital business practices.

Because the parties don't represent the people. The parties represent the interests of those with most influence in the party. In the modern system it is those who make the most impactfull and sustained donation efforts. The rest is just marketing used to secure enough votes in the election show according to arbitrary rules they set and change as they see fit.

No, the asshats creating this mess in the first place (Abbott and the other Republican governors cheering him on) are the ones calling for Civil War. Let's be clear about who is on what side here.

So in order to protect the kids...we're going to put their future prospects in jeopardy with heavy handed zero tolerance policy bs? Throw the fucking vape away and move along jfc

Every 2 years like fucking clockwork there's a "border crisis" to waste time and energy on, which promptly disappears from public consciousness and media the day after the election. It's tiring

Fuck the cdc. They've made one bad call after another on this thing since the start. Becoming like the flu? Last time I caught this shit a few months ago I was in bed for 2 weeks before I could even function at a base level again. And that's with being fully boosted, otherwise healthy, in shape, and using paxlovid.

Lived through and ethnic cleansing genocide. I always laugh when western keyboard warriors start talking about how war is "needed" or "coming" and larping out their movie fantasies. Real war is nothing like TV. Its hell all around. There are no victors in war. Everyone loses.

For what it's worth, yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater is not unprotected speech in and of itself. It became a popular analogy in US jurisprudence after being used by Justice Holmes in Schenck v. United States, but it had nothing to do with the question, holding, or even the dicta of the case itself (it was more or less just an off the cuff analogy). This was later tested and clarified by the Branderburg standard which held that for speech to cross the line to incitement (and thus not be constitutionally protected), it must be “directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action” and “likely to incite or produce such action.” Under that standard, the covid argument would fail.

That being said, many municipalities have disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace laws that will likely get you in trouble if you went around yelling "fire" in crowded spaces (especially dif you actually incited a stampede or a crowd crush, which could then have you on the hook for more serious charges).

The D.A. is the one to blame. Sure the zoning laws are shit, but the D.A. has discretion about which cases to bring and pursue. They could easily just move the fuck along like they do with any number of other cases they do in the year, but having worked with a number of these dipsticks in a previous life, I can guarantee you they saw it as an easy win and didn't expect to get the attention they did. D.A.s are just as bad as police officers when it comes to selective enforcement and application of the law and should be scrutinized much more closely during local elections.

You know that "anti commercial AI license" shit does nothing, right? It's the equivalent of idiots posting that wall of text on Facebook a decade or so ago saying they don't give Facebook permission to use their pictures, posts...etc.

I mean if it makes you feel better and gives you a sense of control in an otherwise out-of-your-control environment then I suppose go for it, but you're not actually accomplishing anything other than making yourself feel slightly better and more deluded.

Edit: above comment was sarcasm (see response below). Leaving for thread comprehension

Imo, your friend, and some in this thread, misrepresent, or simply do not grasp beyond the very surface meaning, the nature of Karma. It is not good or bad - it simply is. It is the cause and effect in all of universe and existence as we perceive it. It is not that your individual bead on the chain will suffer or be rewarded for actions your previous bead form took (if you even believe in reincarnation), but rather that all of nature and all of existence is inextricably tied together, the influence and impact of one bead reverberates through the string that connects all and thus impacts all. Put another way, suffering and discord put into the universe will impact all future events, some to lesser degree than others. That impact may not necessarily be negative on the micro level for any given individual or life being, but on the macro level it nonetheless adds to the overall entropy and disharmony in the universe. The idea of nirvana is reaching a state where one is attuned to a state of consciousness and existence that does not generate Karma, but rather simply exists and floats on a universal wave, existing as an inseparable and fully necessary part of the wave, simply observing and letting what was, is, and always was going to be be.

Ah damn. I used imperial time units instead of metric. My bad.

Defunding the police (horrible fucking slogan btw) isn't about just cutting off police funds and saying fuck it. It's about redirecting the funds to preventative and less militaristic interventions, including better audit equipment and oversight boards, non-lethal and non-armed social services and mental health interventions, and a refocus on community policing instead of military-style Jack Bauer larping.

All violence is not equal. Unjustified and unprovoked violence is not the same as justified violence in self defense, for example. To say that one does not support violence is to paint with a very large brush and over important nuance and context

Just getting something like this out of committee and on the floor for debate would be huge. Unfortunately it stands no chance with the current congress

She basically has no chance of being Trump's VP now...

Disagreed. This cements her as the front runner. She's had the cosmetic surgery to give her that far-right plastic bimbo look, she's cruel to animals and brags about it (Trump famously hates animals and pets), she's a woman and someone who wont upstage him in the spotlight, she kisses his ass religiously, and she's generating controversy to take away heat from whatever insane shit he's doing this week. She's the lock in. You think Trump gives a shit about traditional "electability?" It's been clear since he started campaigning the second time that any and all guard rails that may have been there the first time around are gone. His entire platform is just cult of personality. There is no policy. He doesn't care which traditional voter block she can attract/rebuff. She'll be there to look pretty, back up everything he says, and not upstage him. Nothing else matters for him.

Hamas are not murdering innocents anymore. Israel is. Continually. Unyielding. With glee.

But it doesn't matter what Hamas is doing, did, or will do. It's all political pretense anyway. If it wasn't that it would be something else. Israel wanted to cleanse the area finally and take over, and this seemed like a good excuse as any to rile up the zombie masses and rally them around the genocide campfire. You're falling for it. You're part of the problem.

No, he's not a Republican. He's a Democrat. We need to be able to call a spade a spade without getting into knots to "other" it or reclassify it to fit a preconceived narrative. Democrats are just as capable of corruption as Republicans.

Not reflected in any long-term wage increase or min-wage-introduction economic observations and studies conducted in the last 40 years. This is one of those "it feels 'logical'" talking points that capital likes to tout but is in no way backed up by data or empirical evidence.

This fucking ghoul gets off with an apology letter and probation, meanwhile a mom in Alabama was forced to give birth in a prison shower and sentenced to 15 years for having an addiction that she tried to seek help with and was denied resources for (convicted of endangering the fetus). Serious question: what, in your opinion, makes Aljazeera a non-credible news source? And what, in turn, do you consider examples of credible news sources on the subject?

Are the caravans in the room with us right now?

Even better, an automatic presumptuon of guilt with weapon discharges and camera "malfunctions" with the onus on the officer to raise an affirmative defense successfully. Is it going to be burdensome for the police? Yes. But that's the fucking point. Weapon discharges should be a true life or death last resort only

How is implementing ethics rules and enforcement bad? How can it come back to "bite" them?

My friend, that all sounds lovely to me. Don't fall trap to societal (and especially capitalistic) definitions of achievement and mediocrity that demand a constant stream of more more more. It's ok to be content and enjoy the simple pleasures in life.

That being said, if you're unhappy, get after it. You mention wanting to play Baldurs Gate but feeling guilty about lack of partner time and fear of getting sucked into it for hours: what if you both dedicate a personal hobby night once a week where you can both do whatever and get lost in your own worlds separately without guilt? My partner and I recently started doing this on Fridays and it's been a game changer.
